In this example we explored how light and plexiglass can be used to indicate the different allergy seasons. Each “frame” represents a type of pollen. When it lights up the pollen is spreading. Here we have to think more about how we can visualize if its high or low allergy levels.

Visualizing data
This week we’ve been working on how we can visualize some form of data that changes over time. The information is going to be transformed into a physical form that communicates the data to the user.
POLLEN FORECAST Our idea is based on local pollen levels as data input. The object will visualize the different allergy seasons to the user as well as the pollen levels during the day. We are basing the information on six different types of pollen we have in Norway: alder, hazel, salix, birch, gras and mugwort. The levels of pollen are indicated by nothing, low, medium or high. As output we are exploring using a colour system that represents the different types of pollen. We are also considering using movement or lighting to communicate the pollen levels to the user.

FINAL PRODUCT
The last four weeks we've been working on our final project for this semester. Our main assignment was to create a new interactive product with one input and one output by using arduino, electronics and the knowledge we've gained so far. I decided to mainly work with water by using a liquid pump as an output. I struggled a bit with deciding the input, but after some brainstorming and sketching I decided to use a magnetic sensor.
The code for this project wasn't that complicated, so fortunately I didn't experience a lot of frustration on that end. However I realized that working with water and electronics can be really challenging. The testing of my product always took a while since I had to fill the fountain up with water and then empty it every time. Also I had to frequently check that nothing leaked and be sure that all the electronics were kept dry. Just to build the whole thing and put it together constantely brought up new problems. Looking back on my process I should have simplified my fountain even more.
Water: I tried to focus on the movement and the capabilities of water and to use this to create an interesting construction. The rectangular shape in the middle of the fountain for instance floats according to the waterlevel creating an additional movement. As mentioned in a previous post I wanted the water to flow over an edge and then further as raindrops hitting the water surface in the lower box. The sound of the water dripping combined with its movement provided a desired relaxing feeling.
Optimatelly I would like my fountain to be cylinder shaped with round forms instead of the sharp square forms that it consists of now. But because of the materials and prize I had to make a compromize. Also I would like to build a bigger fountain and hide the liquid pump.
The last days of finishing my product were really hectic which resulted in long nights at school. Finally the project has reached it's end, and I'm glad that the electronics works without any water leaking!

IN THE MAKING
I’ve finally gotten the electronics inside of my interactive fountain. The next step is to glue the lower- and the upper box together.

Will it float?
I added some styrofoam underneath the plexisquare to make it float better - it worked! Hopefully it will be able to handle the weight of the whole rectangular cube.

TEST
The water isn't flowing the way I want it to. The reason for this is that I made several holes in the box where the water is pumped into. I'm going to seal the holes and only leave one for the water to flow back. In addition to this the box wasn't standing horizontally so the water only flowed over the one side. However I'm really pleased with how the water streamed back like raindrops to the lower box, but you can't see it clearly on this film.
BOXCEPTION
My fountain is almost like a puzzle! I've been cutting and gluing a lot the last couple of days. I've also made a ball containing a magnet which I'm not sure if I'm going to paint it yet. Now I have to glue the remaining pieces and then I have to connect all the electronics through a plastic tube. I also have to make a wooden frame containing the arduino.
