“ may i help you, ald ekilam? come to murder me again? ”
that just reminds me of the tribunal dlc where ayem is like “ok so basically we are married again” and vane is like ..... : ) we’re what
“ anything but wedding ayem again. ”
I am fighting to save my soul as much as I can manage, not so that people may learn that there exists a warm, throbbing vision inside this black head of mine, but truly so that I may rescue my soul.
Nikos Kazantzakis, from a letter to Eleni Samiou written c. October 1924

while vane will often resort to speechcraft and the like to avoid unnecessary conflict, it’s usually only after they feel the innate urge to solve it with violence.
the knee-jerk reaction to most things that threaten them is violence -- this being because of their past life yes, but also because they were raised by a dremora ( @rebelablaze ) during a key point of development in their life ( ages 13 to 17 ).
their talent for wordplay came later, when they lived with the telvanni and became more entrenched in dunmer politics.

“Oh, yes. I should bow before the almighty Nerevarine, shouldn’t I? Forgive me, Hortator, for not properly quaking in my boots.” The assassin is unaffected by the display before her, instead responding with a devil’s grin. Hostility was expected, after all; her associates had dogged the Nerevarine to no end. As the other’s hand drifts nearer to their weapon, hers remain far from any of her own, unbothered by the threat curtained by the Nerevarine’s behavior. She approached them with a disturbing amount of ease, inching closer with slow, swaying steps.
“No need to be so defensive. Defensiveness is best reserved for the fearful, and you have nothing to fear from me.” Did they? There was a reason that the Dark Brotherhood would dare send a lone agent after so many others had been slain at the Nerevarine’s hand. Daeris was no Nerevarine, but she was, well, far less killable than the others. “I would not presume to demand anything of you. I’ve merely come so that we may find an alternative that we both find agreeable. Surely a chance at harmony is worth a civil discussion, at the least?”
❝ defensiveness is for the wary, and i am wary of an organization that would insist on having me dead. fearful i am not, but you would imagine i am hesitant to sleep in a city home to your people. ❞ vane ignored the stranger’s prior mocking, having no interest in more verbal jousting than what they thought was necessary.
their fingers curled around ashrender’s hilt as she approached. if she would get too close, they would keep her at a distance at the sharp edge of their blade. ❝ perhaps, ❞ they admitted, although the word was at odds with the voice in their head, one that called for all of their deaths. ❝ what’s your idea of an alternative? ❞
doodle of nova ( @auriferrous ) in her TES verse ... i love this cutie

“You wish to no longer be hunted by my organization, correct? I can make that happen.” Of course, there was a catch. There was always a catch. “Quite frankly, we’re sick of sending our people after you seeing as how most return in ashes. But we are duty-bound to a higher power, and we cannot deny our master the blood he has been promised unless he is first appeased through other means.”
𝙼𝙾𝚄𝚁𝙽𝙷𝙾𝙻𝙳 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝙰 𝙱𝙴𝙰𝚄𝚃𝙸𝙵𝚄𝙻 𝙲𝙸𝚃𝚈, but the beauty that was there was sullied by the filth that dwelled beneath it. somehow despite all the bodies that had fallen by their hand, vane had the feeling that it wasn’t quite the end. this particular assassin’s timing was convenient; a night-time visit just before their plan to siege the 𝚋𝚎𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚋𝚎𝚊𝚜𝚝. the calm before the storm, perhaps, but they were just surprised there wasn’t already a dagger to their neck.
the nerevarine bristled, their hand dropping by reflex to the hilt of ashrender, which hung at their waist, reliable as ever. it was a warning, and a promise; i’m not afraid to do to you what i did to the others. ❝ forgive me if i am not feeling so merciful. you speak of other means, but let me tell you this: you should appeal to me— ❞ lest i kill you all. ❝ —not i to you. ❞
Tamura Ryuichi, from “October Poem,” featured in “The Penguin Book of Japanese Literature,”
vane probably has experienced some shit at least a few times about being “a woman doing a man’s job” in reference to pursuing the hortator title, so please consider: vane backhanding the shit out of somebody who says that to them
y’all have no idea how giddy i am to finally see vane in shit morrowind graphics

vane occasionally revisits raven rock, and is always welcomed as an honored guest by the first councillor. vane still technically has ownership over the settlement, and still has a home there to this day (4E 400+). because of this, there are a few changes in canon regarding raven rock:
people know vane there, though usually not personally, with the exception of the first councillor and a few other long-standing citizens. vane themselves is an enigmatic, cloaked, masked figure that nobody (nobody recent) really knows anything about. all the denizens of raven rock really know is that morvayn meets with them and regards them with a large amount of respect.
the hlaalu problem is already dealt with. long before it even became a problem, actually. intimidated by the hortator’s continued presence, they steer clear of raven rock.
though raven rock is a house redoran settlement, house dagoth has notable influence there as well. there’s a family tomb there devoted to them. (there are, actually, probably a few dunmer there who belong to house dagoth... or did at one point. keep in mind this is dagoth vane’s house, not dagoth ur’s.)
a concept: vane’s subconscious is, more or less, just nerevar
