Maybe it's just my thinly veiled competence kink, but I think it would be a really interesting premise for a book or tv show if the story was centered around a community of apocalypse preppers that actually know what the fuck they're doing.
Like instead of stockpiling guns and canned food, they've been hoarding medical supplies and instructional texts. They've been gathering the equipment needed to support agriculture, maybe they've even been scouting out potential locations for a long-term settlement.
I guess I just find the prospect of community and resource management more interesting than guns and actions scenes.
I want to see a group of people come together because they are all sure that the world is gonna end and actually sit down and fully try to figure out what would be necessary for long term survival. Then enact those plans! Maybe they would have short and long term goals. If the apocalypse comes in six months they would have hoarded supplies and books, if it held off ten years they might have managed to buy a plot of land or send someone through medical school, that kind of thing.
