Student Placement Proposal Template for Yardwork’s

1. Introduction

Name: David Smith

Course: BA (hons) Contemporary Art Practice year 3

Placement Duration: (40 hours to be completed before January)

Placement Site: “Outside the Box public Art trail”.

Objective: I hope to achive learn new skills in making artworks in a public setting on surfaces not usually used for painting. I would also hope to develop my skills in using outdoor art materials. I hope to contribute my painting skills and knowlage of local history, to the yardworks public art projects and start getting myself out there as an artist in Glasgow and its surounding areas and start making connections that can help me grow and establish myself as an artist.

2. Goals for the Placement

Skill Development: I want to improve my painting and multimedia skills by using outdoor art materials and develop skills in this area and being a contributor to large community projects and communicate with local and established artists to get myself out there as an artist. I also want to start engaging with communities in and around Glasgow.

Creative Contribution: I plan on contributing by assisting in the Public Art trail by painting on electric boxes and other street furniture, contributing my Pop Art style of painting in bright colours and recognizable subject matter of something with history in Glasgow that will be instantly recognizable. I would draw on my experience of public art such as Aberdeen’s NuArt project and Jupitar Artland. I hope to also start contributing to workshops in the future and start by contributing to the workshops in this placement.

Learning Outcomes: What do you hope to learn by the end of the placement? (e.g., understanding public art processes, gaining hands-on experience)

At the end of the placement, I hope to have learned the process of installing public art installations and gain work experience in the Glasgow creative industries. And I hope to learn some hands-on experience working collaboratively with communities and artists through artmaking.

I also hope to learn more about the history of different areas of Glasgow through engagement with the communities themselves.

3. Alignment with Yardworks GRID

Project Involvement: “Outside the box” public art trail. Outdoor art installations on substations and electric boxes.

Contribution to Objectives: I will help yardwork’s achieve its goals by contributing my practice and ideas as an artist and make art that reflects on Glasgow’s history in general, and focusing specifically on the history of the area my placement is located in.

4. Time Management Plan

Weekly Breakdown: How will you spend your 40 hours? Break down the tasks you plan to do each week.

To be arranged with placement provider when placement begins and when I see what each week’s plan for relevant work involved. I can be very flexible around when this is delivered out with my core college commitments.

on the 28th Me, one other person form my class, and, my Industry and enterprise lecturer attended a workshop with Commercial Artist David "Pizzaboy" Breen.

this workshop was the last thing I did I'm my placement, but other than the artist, I never said goodbye to anyone else at Yardworks before I left.

David really liked the drawings I made in the workshop and overall he was a really nice casual person to work with in the two hour workshop.

I really like this one, and so did the artist doing the workshop. a striking image of a ship after it has been built, seen from the point of view from the ground.

I can reflect back to this and say I that I'm glad I remembered to ask about what happens with the proposal I sent, learning that mine and all the other proposals will be sent to a approval board who chose what proposals are good enough to pick to continue to install their Artwork on an electrical box somewhere in Glasgow.

Today I went to the long awaited Spray painting workshop from 12-2pm inside the ventilated, heated indoor spray-painting studio with a six meter wall in the Yardworks building at SWG3. the Yardworks studio was launched in 2023 and is situated in the Galvanisers Yard, the large open space outside the main building.

Me and the other students attending the workshop git a basic introduction to spray-painting, the different cap types and what they do and many different beginner and professional techniques.

first we did some spray-painting circles and X&Os so me and the others who heaviest used spray-paint can learn the basics of it.

below is the area of the wall used. The red circles and other shapes were me learning how to spray-paint. it was painted over with wall paint and a roller as we came up with design ideas.

i had brough some of my drawings of ships in with me and desided on painting this most recent drawing.

first i Went to the far corner of the room planning to paint the ship as if it was coming put from the a joining wall.

I will make a separate post of all the best photos of the finished painting.

I Reflect back on this now and can say a few things

I didn't ask the Yardworks staff if there is any possibilities of me continuing with the electrical box project after my placement with them is over. I planed to ask but got so absorbed with the work

I was so focused on my spray-painting forgot to ask were everyone is at with their hours.

My art in particular will be a lot more difficult to paint over. see all the artwork around mine. the drawings I painted over were from other people learning how to use their spray-paint.

At first, I made another simple drawing of the red and grey separated by the black waterline section. I then got the idea to draw on the shape of the Type 26 frigate. I was not to impressed with it when I stood back and saw how it looks like the ship is hovering above a black and red ocean. thought-out a day later I made another more thought-out version.

This more can sketch has the frigate against a grey sky. Outlined in a golden aura.

This is my favourite design after the first sketch. The platform can be used for text, I did not know what to put so I wrote my name in stencil.

21 Hours in total by end of January 16th

On Thursday 16th I went to SWG3 to sit in on a meeting with a International Artist called Jay Artful, who has been commissioned to make a price of Street Art for the G.R.ID Creative Art Project "Outside the Box" public Art trial project being run by SWG3s Yarkworks team.

But when I showed up at the specified time I was informed that instead me and three others in my class would be Helping the SWG3 team with an admin task of Sending emails to some Glasgow community organisations, asking for them to send their proposal for the Creative Project. And that we should also do some research into these organisations for them, this gives the Yard works team an idea of who they might be working with in the future as well as being a way for me to get more placement hours logged. I need 40 hours by January 31st.

after this meeting me and the other placement students were aloud to head home for the day as we planned to do the emailing and researching the next day together in our college studio.

On Sunday afternoon I started some more drawing work using printouts of the templates sent to me by the Yardworks team,

Taking me idea of three bands of colour the represent the paint scheme used on the New Royal navy ships being built in Govan.

then to change things up I drew on top a blacked out shape of the New frigates that were and are being built, with a gold highlight since I had a gold sharpie next to be at that moment.

Friday 17th January.

Me and some of my classmates were tasked with helping the people at SWG3 with some of their many Admin tasks about sending emails to different Glasgow based community organisations asking for proposals for the "Outside the Box" public Art trail Art project I am a part in.

After sending the emails we each picked two organisation from a list SWG3s Yard works Team gave us and I made a research document on each of my two designated Organisations. these being: Make Do & Grow Charity organisation in Glasgow.

And the Protests and Suffragettes group in Glasgow.

I made a research document on each of them and added it to a Padlet sent to me by the Yardworks team.

as of a day after I did this task, I've yet to get any replies on the Emails I sent to these organisations asking for a proposal.

First Placement work of 2025.

Today on the 14th Feb 2025, I and some others placement students in my class visited SWG3 to meet with an international street artist who will be on residency with Yard works. we meet at SWG3 then went on a walk around Govan and looked at a previous Yard works Mural.

This one we looked at had a passenger liner being built in the background of the photo. which I took a lot of interest in for my own work for the "Outside the Box" proposal I need to make soon.

we then went to a community centre where the SWG3 staff talked with the locals while we stood around fir a while, then went home.

On Friday 29th Me and another person in my class im friends with arranged to go to SWG3 at Quarter past one to discuss the wheat paste/Paste-up method of street Art.

we want to use this method as we have no experience with spray paint. it allows up to make art using our own materials and then pasting it onto walls using a glue mixture called "Weatpaste".

we discussed how in January SWG3 are going to host workshops for us to get [practice using the paste up method using our own artwork and their materials. pasting them on their walls with help from a street artist the know who uses this method in his work

I learned about some future projects and opportunities I will be doing to complete my placement. and the material and types of artwork I could use as practice before installing the artwork related to my placement project.

I also learned that collage art is very good for Paste-ups. which of good since I have done lots of collages in my art practice.

Today I visited the Clyde Tunnel Control centre with some people from SWG3 as well as the Invisible city tour group, who are going to draw up plans on how to do walking tours of all the street art installation that are being planned by SWG3. the tour and information I learned was mostly for them to use to plan their tours.

the meeting started with me sitting in a meeting between us and the manager of the Clyde tunnel, here he descriebd to the tour group the history of the clyde tunnel, the building proccess, the fact its the 60th anaversery recently, all the supporting software and infrastructure the tunnel uses.

The most important bit for me, the 2025 plans to begin refurbishing the pedestrian walk and cycle path that is located directly underneath the roadway with new LED lights, a new paint job and more CCTV and phone and radio signal boosting equipment.

It is in this walkway that the mural painting that I might be participating in is going to happen.

The Manager also gave us a tour of the Control room, which was very small.

The Tunnel walkway, as i walked i could here the cars passing just above my head.

I also got a tour of the room with all the fresh air fans. and some art already inside the tunnel.

By the end of the day I learned about inner workings of the Clyde tunnel and its history, I hope to use this knowledge to help me decide and plan my artwork when the time for that comes.

The manager showed everyone the first Visitor book, which had the signature of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Fillip, from when she opened the tunnel on July 3rd 1963 , after Construction started in 1957.

this morning from 10 about almost noon Me and some other classmates took a trip to Stocking field bridge to sit in on a meeting between make it Glasgow to discus their possible involvement in the G.R.I.D open air Mural Art trail project I am taking part in for my placement.

first Laura, the placement holder at SWG3 told them everything I already know about the "Stories of the Clyde" project, as well as some broader history about SWG3s art projects I didn't known about, such as that each community organisation taking part gets £2k to create an art project of any kind to use in the project. I also learned more about the plans to have a student from Glasgow School of Arts Augmented reality division help add an augmented reality aspect to the murals and add more tech to them using apps and QR codes to make the murals more memorable for the communities they are based in.

I then learned more about what Make It Glasgow do. they are an Non-profit, Artist lead community arts group specialising in the creation and installation of ceramic art projects, built on the areas heritage of being a global ceramics and pottery manufacturer. They now offer ceramics workshops and have installed many ceramic sculptures in the local area. I walked past many of these installations to get to the meeting.

I learned its designed by the same architect who designed the New Patrick - Govan bridge.

they are linked to SWG3 buy their proximity to the stocking field bridge, built by the same architect that built the Govan Patrick Bridge that is to play a part of the planned Govan, Patrick, Yorkhill Mural art project. both bridge water ways that divide communities and were important to Glasgow's industrial past.

at the end they brainstormed project ideas such as combining ceramic mosaic art with street art in some way.

I learned a lot about the industrial ceramic making process and how Make it Glasgow has ambition to restart this industry, I learned about the Arts opportunities of north Glasgow, a part of the city i didnt travel to until today.. and more aspects of the "Stores of the Clyde" project.

4th November: 30 minutes logged.

A4 coloured pen drawing I did as an idea sketch for the work I may eventually paint or more likely paste onto an electrical box in Glasgow.

This artwork takes inspiration from the Glasgow based British Art Tom McKendrick, who I have taken inspiration from in previous artwork I did in years ago for another course. but It looks completely different from them at the same time.

below are examples of the paintings he has done that inspired the above drawing, as well as the Artists website about the exhibition these paintings were in.

I plan on doing more of these to further develop my ideas.

In the afternoon of November 8th I undertook a self directed research project to find out ore information about the river Clyde's shipbuilding history. I was prompted to do so by Frood, my placment holder at SWG3.

My placement holder recommended that I do this to gather research in person. and i think going out to these museums has made the experience and all the information I took in more memorable

So I spend the morning going around the Riverside transport museum looking at the detailed ship models and learning about how shipping companies advertised themselves and about both the old and new shipbuilding processes and saw videos of all many famous ships being launched. I also got to see the retired "Clockwork Orange" Glasgow Subway carriage that was recently installed.

I then crossed the Govan-Patrick footbridge to go to the Fairfield heritage museum. A small community operated museum inside the Fairfield's shipyard office building that was restored and re-opened in 2014 to pay tribute to Glasgow's most successful shipyard.

Here I learned about some of the most notable and famous and biggest ships they built. Learning a lot of information about how BAE systems was created and their most recent shipbuilding projects done in their Govan shipyard where the ships are built and launched and the Scotstoun Yard where the are fitted out. (weapons systems and interior installation)

I also learned of the artist Lachlan Goudie, who has been painting and drawing the shipbuilding process for the past seven years in Govan, Scotstoun and Rosyth.

I aim to take inspiration from his Artwork both for my this project, and perhaps in other parts of my practice in the future as well.

There was artwork made by an Artist that I could take inspiration from in the future.

I can reflect back on this and say that I should have donated some money or bought some merchandise before I left.

Two in person meetings at SWG3. the first with the Invisible City Glasgow based tour group from 11:15 to 13:15. then a teams meeting from 2pm to 3pm, where I sat off camera and took notes of what sounded important and the different organisations in the meeting.

Before the Meeting me and the placement holder discussed my future plans for the Glasgow shipbuilding related art. I showed some sketches I've made of the new Type 26 frigates that were built in Govan for the Royal navy and recently launched, with more currently under construction. I was also encouraged to visit local library's and the library of my college to do more research into the River Clyde's History of shipbuilding and find archived photos and footage of the shipbuilding Industry. and that I could include a QR code in my work to show information I had gathered about shipbuilding.

We developed a plan where I could gather research for y project by visiting the transport museum, then going to a shipbuilding museum in Govan using the new Govan to Patrick footbridge.

I'm planning on going to these museums to gather some research tomorrow while everything from today is still in my head. the time I spend there will also count as my placement hours.

The first meeting was with invisible city, a group of Glasgow tour guides that give tours around popular areas of Glasgow. who were at SWG3 to get a tour and to discuss the Clyde tunnel bike path mural art project I am also taking part in. I also tagged along on a tour of the SWG3 building as well. I also learned this tour group have collaborated with SWG3 many times in the past.

Next was a meeting about Collecting stories about the River Clyde from communities of Govan and Patrick, attending this meeting were people from these communities such as school leaders and people the councils of these communities.

I also heard it mentioned that Salmon had been spotted swimming in the River Clyde one recently.

they discussed with SWG3 about collecting stories from these communities and creating art from these storie using micro commissions of local artists, Art that takes the from of painted Installations and the use of technology to make interactive sound installations and augmented reality projects. Using a Glasgow school of Art student who has experience with these methods that is also doing a Student placement.

they talked about using the tunnels intersections to host raves and live performances and to house sound art installations. I have never been trough the mile long Clyde tunnel pedestrian path and I was advised not to do so alone. they also talked about using the "Who owns the Clyde" podcast to gather and share these stories.

this is all part of a planned open air Arts district for Glasgow that loops around Patrick and Govan via the Clyde tunnel and the new Govan Patrick bridge.

Most the people at these meetings were at the opening ceremony for the bridge that I never attended. I can reflect back and wish I attended it.

I learned more about the street art projects happening in Glasgow and about the Yard works Festival that Happens at SWG3 during the first weekend of May, this is basically and street art festival with lots of shipping containers being used as canvases to made street art by artists that are part of the SWG3 artist mentoring program. including 20 international Artists. I doubt I will be able to attend this event but I would like to. It runs for three days.

I can reflect back on this days events and note a few things.

the journey to SWG3 from paisley is quicker than I thought, causing me to be 25 minutes early.

To arrange a part of the building to meet when I arrive.

to use audio recordings, AI apps to make Realtime accurate notes. rather than the pages of messy writing I have made

The plaster cast I made in the Casting workshop on Friday. choosing to cast the imprint of some pens in a far to shallow mold of clay. this is my 3rd or 4th time using clay but I still cant get the hang of it.

the next week i had to come back after casting them to remove the clay and smooth out the surface. the cast was still damp enough to cut pieces of to made the surface smoother.

my use of pens was a choice as it links this work with post colonialism.

the pens symbolising the many bias treaties and land divisions made by the British empire and all other empires to divide and control their colonised lands. now these pens have been focalised and unearthed from deep underground.
