My Thoughts on TRON: Ares
I mention very broad overviews of plot themes. I don't share any major spoilers. I actually liked TRON: Ares a lot, and would recommend it if you're a TRON fan already! They made a lot of little references to the original movie, to Legacy, and to obscure TRON media like the Betrayal comic. The references were well-done and well-integrated into the setting. If you don't have a lot of knowledge of the TRON franchise, and you go see Ares, I think it will be difficult to follow the plot and what's going on. I would only recommend that for someone who would be okay with seeing a "pretty movie," and admiring the special effects, without paying much attention to the plot. It moves fast and doesn't explain the things that it calls back to.
A lot of people have been concerned that Jared Leto would ruin the movie. He's kind of known for being shit at acting. The duty to be a good actor and portray a realistic character actually ended up falling on the supporting actors, and the only thing Jared Leto needed to do was look cool in choreographed fight scenes and stare dramatically into the camera a few times, so his acting skills or lack thereof really weren't noticeable at all. He didn't ruin the movie.
In some ways, I think this one had a better premise than Legacy. The original, 1982 TRON film portrayed the digital world as a place of wonder, and potential. Then TRON: Legacy completely flipped that script with a narrative of, "Technology bad and evil; humanity good." Which I didn't like about Legacy. It felt wrong for the TRON universe. Ares actually found a great middle ground: Some technology is good and some is bad. Some humans are good and some are bad. Some human decisions are good and some are bad. It felt much more open and real (morally/philosophically) that way, instead of a forced narrative. I don't like that Ares pushed the messaging of "love and human emotions are what make life good, and having a directive is bad! Overcome directives!" ...they're programs. They aren't supposed to be culturally human. They are their own unique thing and I don't like how the human standard was forced on the programs. But that was only one small part of a lot of different things going on, so I can live with it. Two of the major characters were Women of Color; one was portrayed highly intelligent, and the other was portrayed highly athletically strong, so if diversity in movies is important to you, I think you'll like the cast, even despite Jared Leto being there! For anyone who remembers the post-Legacy comic I made almost 10 years ago, I thought it was amusing how Athena looked a lot like Lieutenant Commander Roderick, and was a similar archetype of antagonist...
Monster.
