2026/04/24 Niconama Kaoru interview - summary
Joe starts by looking at Kaoru, laughing and saying he messed up (Re:windโ At the start of Toshiya's interview, Joe mistakenly introduced Toshiya as the fInal member to appear....Followed by a collective '????!!!' from Kaoru torikos everywhere, haha). Kaoru asks Joe if something is wrong with him, and Joe replies its just because he is nervous havIng all 5 members to interview, and he asks Kaoru to help him calm down, haha.
Kaoru said he arrived at the studio during Kyo's interview, so he didnt hear what Die and Shinya were saying.
Joe reminds Kaoru about his appearance on his own channel before the album release, and asks him to explain a bit more about Isolation, with the increase from 13 tracks to 14 tracks.
Kaoru says he made Isolation without checking with the other members in advance, it was never entered into a vote like all the other songs. He started making it when all the other songs had gone into mixing. When he saw it taking shape, he let the other members listen, and asked if they could include it on the album. Everyone agreed.
Joe mentions that Kyo talked about seeing the full album talking shape after the last 3 or 4 songs came in towards the end. Kaoru expands on this by saying the last few songs were brought into the picture suddenly, so they really helped the album take shape in an instant.
Joe says it must have been a struggle up until then, worrying about which direction the album was heading. Kaoru replies, it wasnt a struggle as such, but its true, he never really knew how the album was gonna turn out. In fact, he still doesn't really know if it really reached completion, but he actually kinda prefers it that way. If he finishes an album with a sense of completion, it feels like he isnt really challenging himself. He prefers the feeling of wondering whether he could do more, or do it differently etc.
Kaoru says there may be some people who find the sound of this album unsettling, and some people might wish for the kind of dramatic song developments that Dir have done in the past, but that would make the songs sound the same as always. Kaoru didnt want that for this album, he wanted it to feel different, unsettling, and difficult to describe in words. However, because he had spent so much time in close proximity with these songs over the last several months, its hard for him to really see if they meet his expectations. He is too close to them, so he still doubts himself.
Joe asks Kaoru if he heard Kyo talking about 'Downer Downer' (According to Kyo, the next Dir album will be 'Downer Downer'). Kaoru did hear it, and says that this album is still the entrance to 'Downer', its not that dark yet. He thinks its a soft, easy to listen to album. Joe laughs, and questions whether thats actually the case, haha. But Kaoru insists, this is only the start. There is more to come yet!
Q&A corner!
The first question/comment is from a 2nd yr junior high school student, who says Dir's music gives them the drive to study and try hard. Kaoru is happy and thankful to hear it, and says that the student will probably be able to attend lives by the time 'Downer Downer' is out. Any earlier, they would have to attend with their parents.
The next comment is from a fan who says they became a Dir fan last year, so this is their first time experiencing an album release. They have been listening to the new album non-stop.
Next, someone asks Kaoru what the most difficult song to make was? Kaoru answers that the most difficult ones are ones that didn't end up on the album, but as for the actual album tracklist, MOBS was probably the most difficult. It was difficult avoiding his usual habbits in the song progression. How to really draw out the current Dir en grey, instead of just doing what he personally likes was challenging.
But the fact that this album was released means the possibility of an interesting future for Dir en grey.
Joe asks Kaoru for a final message to viewers before switching the paid section. Kaoru says 'Should I point to the link and ask everyone to sign up?'....but there was no link ๐
Highlights from the other interviews
Kyo had me laughing, zoning out and not hearing Joe's question. Joe had to tell him to pay attention.
Toshiya and Joe just discussed philosophy for 10 mins.
During the paid section messages from Miya, Reo, and Kamijo were played to the members.
Kyo and Die appeared together first, Kyo apparently wanting to leave early. After that Toshiya, Shinya, and Kaoru appeared together. They were discussing pre-live routine amongst other things.

"On ๐๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐น ๐ญ๐ฑ, DIR EN GREY held their ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ฎ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐ ๐๐๐ง๐ง๐โ. This show marked the ๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ป๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ๐ถ๐ฟ ๐ป๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ยซ๐ง๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐ฎ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ฏ๐๐ผ๐น๐๐๐ฒ๐น๐ ๐ก๐ผ ๐ข๐ป๐ฒยป, held following the release of their ๐ง๐๐ฒ๐น๐ณ๐๐ต ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ด๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐น ๐ฎ๐น๐ฏ๐๐บ โ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ก๐๐ฅโ, and was exclusive to members of their official fan club โa knotโ.
Starting a new tour in front of their core fans has already become a tradition for the band, and this night was no exception: the venue, clearly too small for the demand, was completely packed, allowing the full scope of this new stage to be revealed as early as possible.
โMORTAL DOWNERโ was released just on ๐๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐น ๐ด, but from that moment it began generating significant buzz on social media. However, it wasnโt only enthusiastic reactions, nor the usual divided opinions; rather, a swirl of diverse responses emerged. Some described its sound and concept as โheavy,โ others as โoppressiveโ; for some it was โhard to understand,โ for others โeasy to listen toโ; some said โthis is exactly DIR EN GREY,โ while others felt โthis isnโt like them.โ These contradictory reactions created a strange yet intense anticipation. Many attendees likely werenโt just looking forward to enjoying a live show after some time, but also felt as if they were facing a kind of puzzle to solve.
Upon entering the venue, an unsettling sound filled the air, while a still image symbolizing โMORTAL DOWNERโ was projected in the background of the stage. As time passed, the image would occasionally distort, and the sound would also change. The atmosphere felt like a mysterious lifeform slowly awakening in the darkness, creating a tense and almost dangerous mood, as if questioning whether the audience was ready to immerse themselves in a world they might not return from, quietly amplifying their curiosity.
Then, as the lights went out right on time, the albumโs opening SE, ๐๐ฆ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐ข๐ก, began to play. On the dimly lit stage, the members took their positions one by one, as cheers rose from the depths of the crowd. Then, the song everyone had been anticipatingโimbued with an almost ritualistic auraโbegan. It felt like the opening of a ceremony.
In an era where information spreads at incredible speed, itโs unclear how meaningful it is to conceal song titles, but there was a certain sacredness that made one hesitate to reveal them so easily. During the approximately ๐ญ๐ฌ๐ฌ-๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ performance, ๐ต ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฐ ๐๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ from โ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ก๐๐ฅโ were performed, including โISOLATIONโ and the single released in April 2024, โ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ถ๐น ๐๐ป ๐ ๐ฒโ. Whether that feels like a lot or a little depends on the person, but for me, the experience was a mix of excitement from understanding the album more deeply and the feeling of being covered again by new mysteries.
In the early stages of a tour following an album release, itโs always interesting to see which new songs are performed and which are not, but itโs equally intriguing to see which songs are selected from their past repertoire. The audience surely speculated about this, and I was no exception. Among the previously released songs performed, some felt completely fitting, while others brought a sense of surprise.
This made my personal interpretation of โMORTAL DOWNERโ clearer in some aspects, while in others it became even more ambiguous. Iโve experienced this kind of feeling at DIR EN GREY concerts before, but itโs precisely that sense of โ๐ผ๐ป๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐๐ปโ๐ ๐ฒ๐ป๐ผ๐๐ด๐ตโ that makes you want to return to the venue again as soon as possible.
In terms of production, the visual elementsโwhich have played an important role in their recent showsโbrought a new texture, and the lighting effects also had a different sense of speed and depth than before. Additionally, for this band, even the release of new artist photos becomes news, but ไบฌ (๐๐ล)โs appearance on stage already differed from those latest images. That said, itโs unclear whether he will maintain that look throughout the entire tour.
The tour will continue across various locations until the ๐ ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ฏ show at ๐ก๐ฎ๐ด๐ผ๐๐ฎ ๐๐ข๐ ๐ง๐๐ ๐ฃ๐ข๐ฅ๐ง๐๐๐ฆ๐. At this point, itโs hard to imagine how it will evolve along the way. However, one thought comes to mind: perhaps this isnโt simply about the band presenting a mystery for the audience to solve unilaterally, but rather something where unexpected answers are derived through the interaction between both sides. And perhaps it is through those answers that one can approach the true essence of โMORTAL DOWNERโ at the two-night performances to be held on ๐๐๐น๐ ๐ญ๐ด ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ญ๐ต at ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ง๐ผ๐ธ๐๐ผ ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ.
Itโs worth noting that these two nights will carry the same title as the album, โ๐ ๐ข๐ฅ๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ก๐๐ฅโ, and that the deadline for the exclusive advance ticket lottery for album purchasers is ๐๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ถ๐น ๐ญ๐ต. Details on how to apply can be found in the application form included with the album. Not only for those already deeply immersed in this work, but also for those who have recently become interested in DIR EN GREY through this release, these shows are a must-see.
Finally, as an additional note, โMORTAL DOWNERโ reached ๐ก๐ผ. ๐ฐ on the ๐ข๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป weekly album chart (and ๐ก๐ผ. ๐ฒ on the combined chart including streaming), extending their streak of Top 10 albums. However, it may still take time before the true nature of this workโone that has sparked such varied reactionsโbecomes fully clear. For that reason as well, itโs impossible to take your eyes off the progression of this tour."
