This isnât just another shooting.Â
This is now officially, with over 50 casualties, the worst mass shooting in United States history. And the fact that it took place at a gay club was not merely coincidence. This was not just another act of senseless violence in America. This was a hate crime.Â
A man walked into a safe space for the LGBT community with an assault rifle and lined them up and slaughtered them.Â
Donât do what the media is inevitably going to do. Donât erase where this happened and who this happened to.
When you make your statements for/against gun control, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the gunmanâs reported religious beliefs, remember this was a hate crime. When your politicians make empty promises about changing the way things are, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the mediaâs coverage of this, remind everyone this was hate crime.Â
Do not gloss over the identities of the victims. They were killed for them. This was a hate crime.Â
One of the things that pisses me off the most about this attack is that it allows right-wing politicians to just pull the 'Muslim' card and take absolutely NO responsibility themselves for what happened. I have no doubt that the shooter was influenced by the recent anti-LGBT rhetoric in the US - around bathroom bills, marriage equality, discrimination by religiously identified businesses, you name it. Rubio and his pals helped create this toxic situation, but now they get to say that the guy was a terrorist and they get away scot-free. Fuck that.
