Dabi - real name Touya

Kanji is 燈矢(とうや) meaning “light arrow”

One of the other readings for the first kanji is あかり (akari) which I think is a pretty good girl’s name, the second kanji only has the readings や (ya) and シ (shi) so it’s difficult to incorporate it keeping the kanji the same. I’d go with Akari for a kanji-based name.

If you want a near female approximation of Touya, I think Touka is good. Can keep the first kanji, and it has a similar sound. Like “Touka“ from Tokyo Ghoul lol

Hawks - real name Keigo

Kanji is 啓悟(けいご) meaning “enlightenment”

Tbh there is nothing to do with this kanji, you can’t make a feasible girl’s name out of them, so we have to go with a female approximation of Keigo. I’d probably pick Keiko because the sound is almost identical.

There are lots of LOV members so I’m not gonna try to do all of them, especially since many of them don’t go by their real names anyway. I can do Toga and Shigaraki, since they do use their names occasionally. I won’t give a full breakdown though, just my suggestions:

Toga’s first name is Himiko, kanji 被身子 meaning “sun child.” It’s difficult to do much with this since it’s very inherently feminine. I would go with Hinato, which keeps a similar meaning and an adjacent sound profile.

In addition, what nicknames can be made with Mikumo that isn’t just Yamikumo? (How did Yamikumo even happen? Can Miku be read as Yami?)

I can’t say I’ll post quotes often but always open to submissions, and maybe one will come up every now and then. I do enjoy answering these other questions!!

Honestly I think it’s uncommon to do nicknames with the last name in Japanese, but if we ignore the awkwardness of doing it, I’ve seen lots of fic writers use Baku (as they do Kiri with Kirishima or Todo with Todoroki) and I feel like that’s the most natural way to do it. If a nickname is made in Japanese it’s almost always using the first part of a name, so Gogo would be quite unusual, But I could see a joke nickname being made with things that Bakugo sounds similar to—like Bakubro, to give another example I’ve seen in fanfiction. I think as long as you feel it’s plausible that’s what matters most haha

hi!! I’ve been off for a while so sorry! ;-; Yeah it’s not how they’d do it in actual Japanese, they do nicknames differently. Usually by shortening to one mora (one bit of sound) and adding kun or chan. Izuku wouldn’t really get one because Deku is already a nickname, but to use Bakugou as an example, his childhood nickname is actually the correct way to do it;

Katsuki —> take first part “ka” + “chan,” Kacchan (かっちゃん). There’s an extra c because it becomes a double consonant when you do this. It’s unusual to use Chan for older males though, so this is an unusual case, but it’s because Chan is used for both with children and he kept his childhood nickname, which is common with childhood friends

To give a feminine example, I’ll do Uraraka;

Ochako —> first sound “o” + “chan,” occhan (おっちゃん).

And Kirishima for a more standard male example;

Ejirou > first sound “E” + “kun,” Ekkun (えっくん). Maybe Ejikun would be acceptable but it is usually just the first syllable.

Fun fact: Katsuki is a gender-neutral name that’s actually used more for women, so you can keep it the same! I could come up with an alternative, but since it works and the meaning (“victorious”) is already very reminiscent of Bakugou’s personality, I would just go ahead and not change it! ^-^

Jirou Kyouka (耳郎 響香)

Kyouka is another average Japanese name, meaning “resonant/reverberating fragrance.” This seems to be a half pun, because the first part means “reverberation” and Jirou has a sound-based quirk. Luckily, that means I can keep the first part and change the second part and still have it be punny and quirk-related.

My choice is Kyouya (響弥). This kanji choice actually makes it MORE punny because it means “all the more reverberation” or “increasingly resonant.” I’m lowkey a genius. 😎

Sero Hanta (瀬呂 範太)

Hanta is…..a super weird name. It means “thick example,” which, like, IS IT a pun? He uses tape so idk, you could make an argument I guess. Anyway, it’s definitely not an average name.

I’m choosing Hanae (範柄) because it sounds the closest and I can keep the first kanji. The meaning of this is “model grip,” which I feel like is just as could-be-punny as Hanta.

Kaminari Denki (上鳴 電気)

Finally, we get to the punniest of all. His name literally means “electricity.” There are a few options here, mostly because Hori just used a random word so I can too.

My top two choices are Denchi (電池; battery) and Denshi (電子; electron). One that doesn’t sound as close to Denki but is similarly funny is Inazuma (稲妻; lightning bolt). All of these have more feminine endings sounds. Denshi is probably my favorite, but Inazuma is the most unique.

Ashido Mina (芦戸 三奈)

The meaning of Mina is essentially “three.” 奈 is a phonetic character and doesn’t really have a translatable meaning in this name. Some people say it means “hell,” but in this case, as an ending character, it is strictly phonetic. 三 alone is pronounced “san” (さん), which is also how you say “acid” (酸). So this is a bit more of an advanced pun, playing with the sound “san.”

So, I need to keep 三 as the first part. Misao (三竿) is one option, although spelled untraditionally. The second part means “pole,” but the first part which contains the pun remains. Another option, which is even more of an obscure pun, is Misaki (三咲). “Saki” (咲) sounds very similar to the second reading of the kanji 酢 (read “su” or “saku”), which has the meanings “vinegar, sour, acid, tart.” So this is double punny, with the sound “san” for acid and the near-sound “saki” for “saku.” Although Misaki is more traditionally feminine in the modern age, it was used more often for men historically.

Izuku (出久) is a rare yet pre-existing name meaning “long exit.” Fortunately for me, there is a suuuuperrr easy female alternative for this, which is Izuki.

Bakugou is said to call Izuku “Deku” because it’s another reading of his name that can have the meaning “one who can’t do anything.” Izuku decides to use this as his hero name because it’s also similar to 出来る (dekiru), meaning “you can do it.”

Trying to use kanji from Izuki to find insulting yet also potentially inspiring nicknames was indeed challenging ngl, but I eventually decided on “Miki,” which is an alternate reading of Izuki. It can have the meaning “give up,” but also means “beautiful chronicle” as a female given name.

I have not! Also it is definitely my dream that someone will use these in their fics lol, if anyone does please tag me or drop it in the inbox! As for the nb question, I think some would definitely prefer to change their names because many Japanese names are more distinctly on either the masculine or feminine side. But there are some names that work for both genders, so I imagine they’d do what other nb people do and just pick a new name lol

Now main business, Aizawa’s first name is Shouta (祥太). Very similar to Shouto, but it’s another real name! Super on a roll with these. But Shouta is another fairly masculine name, and second kanji is super hard to work with in a female name. Once again, we’ll just find a similar-sounding name.

Kirishima’s first name is Ejirou (鋭児郎). This is another real name that means “reflective second son.” I could work with the first two parts of the kanji, but unfortunately the last kanji is exclusively masculine because it’s the counter for sons. The best I could do would be to cut off the last kanji and create the name Eiko (鋭児) and still keep the first two kanji.

This isn’t necessarily a bad option, but I’m also gonna do what I did with Hizashi and find a name that’s similar in sound and syllables. I think Eriko is closest in rhythm. With this name we can keep the beginning kanji for “e.” You could also move away from the beginning “e” to keep the “ji” sound and go with Fujiko.

Mic’s first name is Hizashi, which is another real name! And Hori actually doesn’t use any kanji for Mic’s name, which gives me A LOT of freedom.

I tried to to use kanji from the two forms of Hizashi, but they don’t really create any options that sound similar enough, and since Hori didn’t use kanji either, I’m choosing to stick with a close-sounding name that has the same number of syllables and a similar meaning.

The name Hizashi means “sunlight” or “rays of sun,” so my obvious first choice was Hikari (光), which means “light” and has a very similar sound to it. Other options would be Hibiki (響), which is still close in sound, or Hinata (日向). Both are sun-related names with three syllables.

Can do! His real name is Yagi Toshinori, so the kanji for Toshinori would be 俊典, meaning “longevity.” Props to Hori on this one because this is a real name and not one he made up to be punny. It also makes my job way easier.

Keeping the kanji, we do the usual and check out the alternative readings.

Okay…. So this is super hard. Neither of the readings of the first kanji would be used in a traditional female name. I could make an argument for Toshifumi, which is a masculine name, but “mi” is a more feminine ending sound, and because yk All Might is buff I could argue for a genderbent name being more masculine.

Yesh ofc. So, Todoroki’s first name is Shōtō. The kanji for this is 焦凍, the first meaning “to burn” and the second meaning “to freeze.” I know. It’s hilarious. Hori loves to do puns in his character names. Anyway, let’s look at readings for these kanji and see what we can do.

焦: こ (ko)、あせ (ase)、じ (ji)、しょう (shō)

凍: こお (kō)、とう (tō)、こご (kogo)、い (i)、し (shi)

This is a bit harder because female names don’t typically end in the sounds that are in the readings of the second kanji. Since I really want to keep the kanji, I tried and managed to think of one solid alternative: Shōkō. It’s a bit unusual to have “ko” with a long “o” at the end of a name, but Shōko is a real, fairly popular name for girls, so mimicking the sounds like this works fine IMO, even if it’s a bit off when looking at the spelling. (Bonus points for this one because I keep the starting sound the same.)

If allowed to switch the kanji around, I have secondary suggestions: Shiase or Kōko. Kōko is super cute, might be my favorite tbh. Shiase is a little strange, but it’s close to “shiawase” which means “happiness,” which I also just think is cute. And it’s not like Hori’s names for them are any more normal than these…
