I never expected II IV to explore the themes it's exploring right now, but I am really interested! The direction they're taking Fan is a little terrifying, I feel like I rarely see it done empathetically. But I like how it's going now and it would be so meaningful to me so I'm gonna trust the process. So, I made some art to represent my interpretation of Fan and Bot's dynamic bc that convo in IV 6 was euogh-
Notes
Themes: self-isolation / self-destruction, suicidal thoughts, and how these tendencies can reflect pain back onto loved ones. This piece is about Fan and Bot's relationship, though leaning toward Fan's perspective on it with a lot of the symbolism
Like my last illustration, I'm not going into everything but here are some symbols I wanted to note! I feel like I didn't get the message across as much so I'm including some explanation too where it's worth it. Sorry if something doesn't make sense this post got long haha
The paper chain
Meant to evoke imagery of shackles but also childhood paper crafts. Symbolizes the pressure of their relationship.
Fan thinks he's holding Bot back (shackles). But Bot cares about Fan and does actually want them to have a relationship (paper: easily broken, not physically trapping them).
Still, though they're not trapped like Fan believes, the fragility of the paper makes it all the more stressful to keep that relationship alive when Fan is pulling away
2. The fire
Representative of Fan's turmoil and destructive actions to isolate himself.
The flames consume most of his face. Instead of shying from the fire, Fan is bringing his arm up to set the chain on fire to "free" Bot. Since it's made of paper, though, that ultimately only creates a line to spread it.
3. Colors of the chainlinks
Some are associated with people/things in Fan's life, or the ties that he plans to cut off/burn.
The final links (last to be cut off) have Fan's colors. The middle links create distance between the links representing Bot and Test Tube (or any of Fan's loved ones) and those final links. They're blue, symbolizing the game and the decision to bring it back.
4. Poses / expressions
Fan's arm creates a boundary between Bot and him, but doesn't fully create a boundary between Bot and the flames.
Bot is looking at Fan and has his colors in their eyes, but Fan refuses to look at them, not seeing their perspective.
5. Extra stuff
This piece isn't explicitly about it but I did make Fan's glasses look like Cobs' on purpose lol

i need you all to understand that knife's bio from the 2013 version of the website is a key aspect of understanding his deal. he is so very lonely and so very self-loathing but it is also so very his own damn fault. none of these traits should be a surprise to you.
i try to have an open mind about what might or might not happen in iv but honestly i have completely given up hope on any kind of follow-up regarding walkie talkie and springy. walkie talkie's just gonna be an occasional cameo and springy is dead as fuck. springy's never getting out of meafterlife because nobody likes them enough to help them and they have like three fans so the crew has no incentive to bring them back on that front. it's over. it's fucking over. they killed my spring and lobotomized their shit wife who hates them. i'm never seeing that garten of banban content farm oc looking son (gender neutral) of a gun ever again. i have nothing.
