Monday, November 25th 1987
Steve offered to work this week. The pay was good. Besides, it's not like he had anything better to do all week. His parents were somewhere in Colorado or something, seeing friends. He doesn't like being home alone during the holidays, just reminds him of of how he has no partner and his Mom and Dad don't really give a shit.
The days weren't exactly hard or busy. Just helping the sparce customers check out, sweeping up the various leaves and debris that customers tracked in every once in a while and dealing with the occasional pissed off mother who didnt understand that all of their copies of "Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" are all gone by now.
It's the Monday before Thanksgiving so Hawkins has the familiar hustle and Bustle feeling in the air. The town had its first bit of snow that morning, just a light dusting, Not enough for kids to play in or anything, It did however make the sidewalks a bit icy.
The bell on the door jingled for about the 17th time that day. His head was buried in a T.V. Guide. He let out a mumbled word that sounded something like welcome but wasn't quite it. He glanced up as the new customer turned the corner of the shelf where the drama's are.
He cocks his head to try and get a peak at the customer but she's too far over, so he goes back to reading. He sighed as he read. The whole weeks schedule... "Who's The Boss", "Family Ties" "Dallas" "Dynasty" "Miami Vice" and "Murder, She Wrote". He thought of all of those as "Old lady shows" nothing he'd be interested in, he didnt mind Family Ties as muchas the rest, thinks Alex P. Keaton is cool.
He then finds himself lost in a strange thought about who's idea it first was to stuff a turkey and how did they come up with that.
The service bell at the other side of the counter rings
"Hello?" a small voice says behind him. He turns and steps over
"Yeah, so sorry about that." He looks her over. She looks familiar. "Uh...do I know you?" He asks, trying to place her face
"Me? Oh. I guess, maybe."
Then it clicks. It was that girl, Alice or...Amanda or something. She sat in front of him in Biology in junior year. He used to cheat off her paper. She looked different know. Her hair cut shorter, braces off. She had nice teeth, nice skin, her outfit was cute and so well fitting, she dodnt have on a whole lot of makeup but what she did suited her well. She was pretty...really pretty and- oh shit, he was practically drooling.
"Oh, yeah, high school. Im Steve, by the way, Steve Harrington"
"You remember me?" He says, practically jumping at the thought, looking like an excited puppy
"Kind of, but uh, the name tag helps."
"Oh yeah, right, that thing." He shrugs it off, and little embarrassed and a bit disappointed. "Did you find everything okay, today?" He plays it off.
"Yeah, I didnt really come in with anything particular in mind, so yeah." She nods with a soft smile. His knees felt week
"I haven't really seen you around lately." He queries.
"Yeah, I moved out for college. NYU. Im back for the holidays"
He can't help but feel a little intimidated by that, maybe she'd think less of him since he didnt go. Or maybe she has a boyfriend there. There's no point, she wouldn't be here long...Screw it. He was gonna do it, besides if she turned him down its not like he'd have to see her a lot.
"Well...uh, uhm, this town can get pretty boring so if you ever need anything to do, there's me.- Wait! No, not like that im not saying for you to DO ME just uh...if you-"
"Are you asking me out?"She smirks a little, He could die right there.
"Well, I'm trying to." He says, his cheeks flushing.
"Okay" His eyes light up. She didnt say no.
"Wait, Real-I mean, okay, great. When?."
He nods a little too quickly she takes her receipt and writes her number on it, handing it to him "Here, call me." He's grinning like an idiot. She walks to the door but stops herself.
"Oh, and Steve? I'd be happy to do you." She walks out, getting in her car and backing out of the parking lot.
His jaw is on the floor. He actually jumps up and down fists pumping in the air. He has a date
**************************************************** TWO DAYS LATER
****************************************************
Steve gets out of his shower and gets dressed, whistling and singing as he does. He does his hair, four puffs of Farrah Fawcett spray as it begins to dry. He puts on cologne and grabs his keys, then he starts out the door going to his car.
On the drive over he turns on the radio, his finger drumming along with Phil Collins on the radio. Then he pulls up. He's 10 minutes early so for six of them, he practices how to say hi once he gets to the door. He brought flowers, he didnt know her favorite type so he just grabbed what he thought was pretty. He grabs them and walks up to the door, taking a deep breath before knocking. He waits, shifting on his feet.
Then, she answers. He stared, taking in her outfit before stuttering a small "Hi" all his practice for nothing. She smiled. "Hi yourself." He handed her the flowers "thank you, they're so beautiful." She let's him in and goes to put them in a vase. He looks around, taking in all the decor "Sorry," she grabs her bag "Okay, I'm all ready to go."
He practically trips trying to open her car door before she gets there. She giggles and he swore he might faint. On the car ride ther he's a little nervous but that all fades away when she smiles or laughs. They get to the restaurant and he parks and helps her out of the car.bits a little pizza place called TJ'S. Its not as fancy as Enzo's but its usually not too busy and the food is nice. They sit in a little corner booth. They both order a coke and the same dish, smiling when they realize.
For Steve, the night goes by in a blur. They talk for three hours about everything under the sun, from music, to favorite childhood cartoons. They just...click. He can't take his eyes off her,
Eventually the staff drop hints that they should leave. Its an hour past closing so he says the check and helps her get her coat on. On the way out she mentions "The one guy death staring them" once Steve ordered his 4th refill and they both start laughing. She slides in the car and shuts the door, much to his dismay. He gets in and playfully pouts."I would've done that for you."
"I know, but I can do it too."
"Fine." He huffs playfully
"So...tomorrow is turkey day, got anything you're particularly thankful for?" She asks, watching his face as he watches the road
"Well, after tonight I'd say I'm pretty thankful for you."
"You're a charmer, Steve Harrington."
"And you're beautiful, Amy Williams." He turns and looks in her eyes
She blushes a little and quickly looks away, out her window but Steve doesn't miss it and smirks to himself.
"But seriously, are you doing anything special with family or friends?"
She can see his face turn more somber. But he masks it with a shrug.
"Nope, just a hot date with me, my TV and some microwave popcorn." He says like its clearly not the first time he's been alone on a holiday.
She looks at him as if thats the saddest thing she's ever heard.
"No. No way. You're coming over." She says firmly
"What? But what about your family?" He looks confused.
"They won't care, and if they do they'll have to deal with it. Besides, there's plenty of food."
"Well...I dont know, that or my popcorn is a pretty hard choice.... but...I suppose" he grins as he pulls up to her house.
"Good. I wouldn't let you argue."
He walks her to her doorstep and watches her unlock it.
"Alright, show up here tomorrow at 2:00?" She asks
"Wouldn't miss it for the world. Goodnight, Amy"
She goes up on her tiptoes and kisses him softly.
"Goodnight, Steve Harrington" She says as she walks inside, leaving him on her step, looking like a kid on Christmas Morning. He grins and walks to his car on cloud nine. He was definitely thankful for her.
