Now that I've expunged More Like Resting than Running from my soul, it's time to dive back into Ruined Palms. Chapter 5 is only in first draft state so it's a little rough and awkward, but I want to highlight this little passage as it's starting to get at the meat of what I want to explore in this fic.

“Blood and ashes, Ashur. Don’t you have a single thing you know you like?” The question hung in the air so long that he thought Ashur wouldn’t answer him. Then, with a soft voice and averted eyes, he said, “I don’t know…because I haven’t really been afforded the time to think about that sort of thing.” “Bollocks.” “I’m serious, Quin.” His gaze sharpened, sapphire that cut as sharp as his tone. Tarquin leaned back a little, and with a small frown he assessed the man again. He was being serious. Not that Ashur joked around at all. What sort of an upbringing had stifled and sheltered him so much that he couldn’t even give a solid answer about his favourite colour? Tarquin wanted to scoff and tease him, to pinch at that old familiar spot—highbloods and their pretentious, arse-clenching ways. But he couldn’t bring himself to do it. Ashur’s shoulders were slumped, his ears a little red. He was embarrassed. “There’s only one thing for it, then,” he found himself saying. His voice was far too soft, but it caught Ashur’s attention. “We’ll go through that list, one by one, until you know what you like.” Ashur smiled. Soft and genuine, his lips pulling back just a fraction to flash a peek of his teeth. A very slight dimple formed in his cheek. Maker, that was dangerous.

"Yeah. I'm learning that," replied Davrin. "How do you deal with it? Because since Weisshaupt, it seems you have been handling things well. Or, better, at least." She shrugged. "Not sure better is the word I'd use. We don't really have the luxury of sitting on what has happened. I still think about D'Meta's Crossing. Treviso getting blighted. Losing Weisshaupt and Fuessen." Lilja could feel the pressure of tears building as she got misty-eyed. "It hurts... a lot. I miss my home." "Yeah," sighed Davrin. "Sometimes Weisshaupt felt like the only true home I ever had. Back with the clan… I was too much for the mould that kind of life expects of someone. I missed it when I left, though, but I never really understood why I missed a place where I felt I never belonged." "Familiarity." She ran her gloved fingers along the dirt and rock. "There's comfort to be had in it. You and I were both never meant to stay in one place, that much is certain, but I think we both have sentimental hearts that make it difficult sometimes."
