"No, yeah, I've, uh- I've been goin' around for a while. Just forgot t' check in, I guess. My bad," he apologizes, sheepishly rubbing the back of his neck. "Uh.. so, how've things, like.. been? With you?"

“… Um… A bit yes…” He told him, blushing slightly.

“All that matters for me, yeah, but..” he stops, sighs. “If you never met me, though, right? If none of you ever met me- if none of you ever met me, you wouldn’t miss me, life would still go on, yeah? You’d fall for someone else. Don’ try an’ tell me you wouldn’t. It’dbelesstrouble.”

“That’s absolutely ridiculous Bart. If I never met you I’d still be the sad lonely creep I apparently become whenever you go away to…wherever it is you go.” Gar put his hand on Bart’s shoulder. “You’re my soulmate. I wouldn’t be right without you.”

“You’re not a creep,” he mumbles, rubbing the back of his neck. “It’s not- I’m really not that big of a deal, dude, oh my god. I’vebeengoneandyou’restillbreathing, you’re functionin’ fine. Sameforme. It’snotasbadasyouthinkitis. Me bein’ gone, I mean.”

“… Uh… Alright… Guess I’m just worried…”

Bart doesn’t reply after that, just shifting the wallet from one hand to the other every couple seconds, eyes darting from Antonio to the wallet to the door every time he moves the wallet. He’s not even hungry anymore, honestly, but there’s nothing he can do about it now. He doesn’t even entertain the thought of taking four dollars for more than an instant. Antonio’s just a kid who’s too nice for his own good. That doesn’t mean he deserves to be robbed when he’s trying to do someone a favor. Sure, it’d let Bart sleep somewhere warm, guarantee him some safety tonight, but he doesn’t really care about that anymore. He’ll take the food, shove everything except the ice cream in his bag for later and try to choke the ice cream down, say goodbye to Antonio and say hello to that creep and earn the money himself. It’s not worth bothering Antonio any more over.

Antonio felt like he took all too much time to order, and by the time he had their food, he had to set it down on a table towards the back and in a corner of the restaurant. He didn’t like to eat while walking and he still wanted to get to know Bart better, after all. Something about him just didn’t seem right, like how the lies came off his tongue too easily, almost undetectable despite the way his voice would quiver towards the end. Or maybe it was the way that he was walking at night, even with another next to him, like everything was out there to harm him. Or maybe it was the fact that Antonio at least knows of every teenager in this city, and he’s never even heard someone describe a short guy with blue eyes and brown hair with an attitude like an oyster. But maybe Antonio was a Pearl Diver, because he just wanted to crack this one’s shell.

Gabe would’ve been, at least. I mean, you’d’ve just fallen for some other hooker and been happier, or maybe we’d end up hooking up later on or somethin’, yeah? An’ Thad said it was good havin’ me around, at least at first, so I wouldn’t take that from him. But Gabe was just- he was a kid, y’know? He was goin’ places ‘til I dragged him down. He wouldn’t trade it now, but he doesn’t deserve t’ have t’ deal with that.

Gar frowned. “Bart. I fell for you, not some hooker. I wouldn’t trade the time we spend together for anything. …And Gabe…” Gar thought for a moment. “Gabe made you happy. And that’s all that matters. Okay?”
