You can die a long painful death
You can commit hard, but if it doesn’t fit with the premise of the scene, you’re just screaming for no reason.
Learn the rules so that you can break them the right way.

Don’t give into ironic detachment.
Really believe in what you are acting, even if it’s unbelievable
Don’t wink to the audience about how weird the scene is.
Really lay pipe. Set it up, who you are and what the relationship is. then when you come back with the silly, it’s a wonderful reprieve.
The silly pops more when you commit ti the world.
Try to find the positive.
Pull from your real life. If the world you create feels real, people are interested.

You have to make the effort to keep it exciting.
Once you figure out your role in a team, do not limit yourself to that role -- Keep pushing yourself.
The coach should be aware of how the people in the scene are being perceived on stage, and push them accordingly.
It’s not your job to control the show.
Crystalize the unusual thing in a specific way.
Emotionally care about it
Add information
Be interested in the moment
You don’t have to get laughs to be important in the scene.
Live in the moment truthfully; Listen, be vulnerable, and be able to feel it.
Edgar Momplaisir / Laci Mosley

You should care as the voice of reason. Don’t just condescend to the unusual person.
Seek pleasure in scenes. Go for the good, fun path rather than shitting on the scenes.
Be yourself -- Don’t tone yourself down.
Don’t half ass anything.

Initiate from what you are entitled to from a philosophy.
The best tool for a team is trust.
No mater how dumb an idea is, if you double down and commit you can find something great.
Lean hard into yourself, and your own point of view. Bring your whole self into all of your work.

Throw yourself into the flame. Commit all the way.
After a bad first beat, just follow the most fun part, even if it’s not the Game.
What do you find funny?
Why are you doing this?
And have fun with that
You like improvisers by how they And -- We all have to Yes, but everyone And’s differently.
Every scene can be bad, every scene can be good.Find what you like about it.
If you feel that a scene is not going well, have a strong reaction or confess to something. At least it will make the characters care, and you’ll have something to latch onto.
Janie Stolar / Morgan Miller

Try things and trust that your team will have your back.
You don’t have to be in a scene that makes you uncomfortable, or makes you feel sad -- If you feel that something is treated flippantly, call it out.
Have an open mind. Find some reason why everyone in class is amazing, and find the way to bring that out of them.
If you don’t agree with what your teacher or coach says, thats okay, but try it out.
Trust that everything will be okay, don’t try and control things.
It doesn’t matter if people laugh, just really commit and make it a true scene. If they care, you care.
“We obsess with Yes And, but really it should be 90% Yes, and 10% And.” -- Shaun Diston

You can’t be worried about getting laughs right away. You gotta out in the work up top.
The point isn’t only to make them laugh, it’s to make them feel anything.
Just listen and be excited about the other persons ideas.
Always come from a guttural feeling that you love your scene partner.
Come from a place of love and support, and give yourself time to grow as an improviser.

A base reality does’t just have to be yourself. A base reality can be an archetype that you play.
Listening is a skill not a talent.
Don’t just listen to the words, listen to the subtext.
You should be experimenting, you should be trying stuff that doesn’t work.
If your a team that’s all over the place, do an opening that will give you clear Game.
If your team is more theatrical, do something organic.
If your Pattern Game is muddled from too many competing pitches, initiate clearly the game that you wanna play.
The Clearer you are up top the better.
If you have no comedic ideas from the opening, everyone needs to be on the same page of not trying to be funny fir the first 30 seconds.
Teams should have game plans for different situations.
Bring joy into your scenes.

Monoscene – A Harold Without Edits
What is a monoscene?
It’s an improv form–a structure for an improvised performance like the Harold or La Ronde.
Often in a play, a series of scenes are set in one location, all in a row with no break in time. For instance, the structure of Chekhov’s most famous plays are all pretty similar. They consist of four acts, and each act happens in a different setting. Characters enter and exit many…

A really great article on performing the Monoscene from Kevin Mullaney of Under The Gun theatre in Chicago. Argh, it’s good! I am maybe jealous of how good this article is. Am I? No, I’m good. I like it in a healthy way. Anyway, check it out!

Look at how the other person’s body is reacting and the energy that they give you, and support that emotionally.
If you get lost in the pattern game, listen extra hard, and don’t be afraid to ask your teammates what something is.
The only way to truly Yes And is to interpret whatever your scene partner did through your lens

I went to see “This Show Is Not Funny” at UCB Sunset and their guests were Tatiana Maslany, Ben Schwartz, Thomas Middleditch, and Gil Ozeri!
The show was AMAZING and afterwards I got to meet both Tat and Tom (Cullen)! Such awesome and wonderful people. Love them both!
Meeting some of my favorite people and watching my fave (Improv) at my favorite place (UCB), what a great night! <3

Don’t think and be fuckin’ cool.
It’s okay to be sad about not making a team, but but don’t let it affect your friendships.
The improtant thing is getting to a place where everyone feels comfortable.
