Lucyâs heart pounded in her ears with her growing adrenaline. She had bared her teeth at the bewildered group. Her eyes not leaving them for a single moment. That was until a large hand decided to rest on her shoulder. â!âShe instinctively took a firm, vice grip of the otherâs hand. She pulled it off before spinning around. Her right hand balled into a tight fist. Her eyes widened as she forced herself to stop her fist. She breathed softly as it was mere inches away from his stomach. Her eyes drifted up before meeting Emrysâs. She let out a shaky sigh before forcing her hand to uncurl from a fist before holding up her hands in return. :I: She blinks a couple of times before forcing herself to take a deeper breath calming her unsteady hands.
:I APOLOGIZE FOR MY OUTBURST: She looked however back over her shoulder. Her eyebrows knit together, having not forgotten about them. She held up her hands before her fingers flew together with her anger. :MOTHERFUCKERS WOULDNâT LEAVE ME ALONE. I WAS TRYING TO DISTANCE MYSELF:
Donât apologize, He waves dismissively at her, attention trained on the IVs at her back like a panther ready to strike. Inappropriate behavior like this always left him angry, but targeting a young III left him even angrier. Emrys signs at her again, leaving the IVs watching even more confused. âWhat the hell is going on?â One chimed in. âSir we were justââ Tell them if I catch any of them anywhere near you again, theyâll be dispatched from the Infinity in Neutral Buoyancy tanks.Â
Lucyâs jaw tightened as she merely blinks at the other. Her mouth was now slightly open and she soon closed it. Though, a slight smirk touched her features. She turns in order to look at the gawking group of IVs before speaking slowly in a low voice. âIf you know whatâs good for you. You all should leave.â She clears her throat a bit before chuckling. âHe wants me to tell you. âif I catch any of them anywhere near you again, theyâll be dispatched from the Infinity in Neutral Buoyancy tanks.â She watched in silence as it was the IVs turn now to gawk. Oneâs eyes went wide, while the secondâs mouth was slightly ajar. The third however finally cleared his throat before saying quietly. âWe were just leaving Sir..â They began to stride out of the room, rather quickly Lucy noticed. A chuckle left her lips watching as the door slid closed behind them. A sigh soon followed suit as she held up her hands once again.Â
:YOU SCARED THE SHIT OUTTA THEM: The smirk still plastered on her lips. :THATâS WHAT THEY GET. I SWEAR THE WAY THEY LOOKED WAS MORE LIKE LITTLE BOYS THAN SPARTANS: She began to finally stride back to her locker now and this time feeling a little more comfortable. She opens it in order to place on her dog tags. She closed her eyes for a moment as relief washed over her. The metal clinked together softly, a reminder of sorts. She closed her locker now before striding back over to him. :IÂ APPRECIATE YOU COMING TO MY AID LIKE YOU DID. THANK YOU:
Emrys grins widely at her once the IVs were gone, seemingly proud of himself, and keeps watch as she went to her locker to put her things away. Although obviously the chances of him actually doing anything to the others was very, astronomically lowâafter all he didnât want to get a court martial or anythingâit felt good to at least speak up. There was a brief flash of a memory, from what felt like lifetimes ago. Standing up to a squad of ODSTs who were trying to get a little too friendly with a member of Green Team after their augmentations. Heâs still for that moment, before he snaps back to life and blinks a few times. I wouldnât have just stood by, things like that need to be taught, it seems.
Feeling the adrenaline finally start to dissipate, she sat down on the bench once again before holding up her hands. : I DONT KNOW WHAT THEIR PROBLEM WAS, GOD IF WE DID ANYTHING LIKE THAT WHEN I WAS IN BOOT, WE WOULD GET BEAT UP BY MENDEZ, THE TRAINERSâŚHELL PROBABLY BY LIEUTENANT COMMANDER AMBROSE HIMSELF: She shook her head almost disappointedly. : WE TAUGHT THE GAMMAS BETTER THAN TO ACT LIKE SHIT HEADS AS WELL. I HOWEVER HAVE NO IDEA HOW IN THE HELL THE IVS GOT LIKE THIS: She sighed and peered down at her hands now choosing to stretch them out. Thankful it was only the two of them in the room now, she ran a hand through her buzzed hair. It was starting to get long again. She let out a sigh and rummaged through her locker before pulling out a pair of electric clippers.Â
She turned to face him after a moment before holding up her hands. : STUPID HAIR IS STARTING TO GET LONG AGAIN:Â
They grew up normal.
It was all the explanation he felt like giving, really. Because thatâs all there was needed. Emrys didnât like to think about it too much, what life wouldâve been like had he not been a part of this program. Perhaps how he likely wouldâve died in a glassing, or even just by something mundane. He didnât remember much about the past, and there was no point to dwell, so he keeps a keen gaze on Lucyâs movements as she does whatever it was she was doing. When she pulled out a pair of clippers from her locker, he reflexively ran a hand through his hair as well. Haircut time?

Emrys gives a little shake of his head, visor polarizing once again. âNegative, Spartan. I was just in there. And only typically is it squad versus squad. I was just in there solo against Fireteam Forest. Weâve a rule for fairness sake that no Spartan can be in a match so soon after just finishing one; unless a tournament is ongoing.â
He did feel a little guilty; after all this Spartan was still struggling with loss.Â
âIâm sure you could handle yourself solo too. Itâll earn their respect and stop the little shits from hassling you so much.â
Safe to say he was a little disappointed at that, but credit to him for not letting it show. He supposed then that heâd have to learn said rules, because they were important and he didnât want to fuck anything up. Not more than heâd already fucked things up on Reach, at any rate âŚ. well⌠that wasnât the truth but more often than not he believed it to be true.
âStop the little shits from harassing me, huh? Well, when you put it that wayâŚâ A twisted sort of smirk formed on the Spartanâs features, and he gave a little shrug. âTell you what⌠maybe you watch me go up against IVs and tell me what rules Iâve breached at any time? You donât have to, itâs just a suggestion, but⌠I donât want to mess anything up, you know?â
He was glad it was quieter now; sometimes the business got to him, and he had to escape for awhile. Occasionally IVs would drift past, but it was mostly Marines or other personnel. No full Fireteams had gone by, which was somewhat of a disappointment. He wanted to actually ask somebody to go up against him, rather than just wait for a Fireteam to slot themselves into the Arena.
A shrug, why not. âThe system is good at tracking mistakes, but Iâll keep an eye on you from the view deck.â He pauses for a second, hands still up to sign though his head was cocked to the side a bit. Thais spoke up this time. âThe next War Games match should be in approximately ten minutes. Fireteam Shadow is slated to fight Apollo, but I have adjusted the schedule to allow for Spartan-A259 to substitute for Apollo.â
Emrys gives a silent chuckle, indicated by a slight shake of his shoulders. Even after all the years theyâd been together, Thais always surprised him in subtle ways. âShould we gear up?â
imperaxx:
âCustom set training exercises, typically two squads against each other for an objective. Or whoever can get the most,â Emrys does little air quotes with his hands before continuing, âkills. I was just in a match of the latter and wiped the floor with the IV squad I was up against. Itâs cathartic in some way.â
Now that was a tempting idea. Wiping the floors with some Spartan-IVs was good fun. Plus he could put them in their place a little, too. Carter tapped a finger on his chin, mulling it over. If it was two squads against one another⌠he didnât exactly know anyone aboard this ship aside from Emrys⌠well.
âI donât suppose you wouldnât mind going another round in the Wargames Arena, teamed up with me?â he questioned. âI donât really trust those IVs enough to team up with them and I donât know anyone else here.â No S-IIs aside from Blue Team, and they were a lot more daunting, and no S-IIIs that he knew of, either.

Emrys had his own struggles. Quite a number of them. But something had always just prompted him to carry on. Even now after having never properly figured out her fate, he kept on. It was all he knew after all. âYou must not be keeping busy. If youâre only keeping to your thoughts, that is not the right way to do it.â A pause, his hands remain in the air but unmoving as he thinks. âHave you tried War Games yet?â A sort of nod behind him, to where heâd just exited from. âEven if you think the IVs arenât up to our speed, itâs still a chance to have some normalcy again.â
A thoughtful look flitted over the younger Spartanâs face at the suggestion of Wargames, and going up against the Spartan-IVs. Now there was an idea. Maybe he could get even with the idiot that had knocked him into the wall, that way. Nevermind about the fact that normally, the S-IVs couldnât keep up with him. They at least had two normal legs to stand on. And sure, he could still run, could still fight, but he was quite certain that he wasnât as fast or as nimble as he used to be.
âI canât say that I have tried it, no. Mostly Iâve stuck to the Infinityâs gyms. Is it any good?â Again, he rubbed the back of his neck. He wanted to do something useful. Maybe putting those S-IVs in line would do the trick.

Finally, Emrys shifts his stance, crossing his arms. âIf you were CO for Jorge, I know for certain he wouldnât accept this attitude.â
âMaybe I do feel that way.â Carter admitted quietly, rubbing the back of his neck, both out of a nervous habit, and out of the fact that heâd been sleeping in awkward positions because he tossed and turned a lot. âThe amount of times I think that one of them will rise up and chew me out for the fact that Iâm not still fighting⌠not fighting whatâs taken me over insideâŚâ
He lifted his shoulders in the barest hint of a shrug.
He glanced away out of shame when Emrys told him that Jorge wouldnât approve of his attitude. âI know,â he said quietly, âI just donât know how toâŚ. Iâm tired of feeling lost and nothing left but⌠I just donât know how to fight it.â

âSpartan, all of us have survived something we shouldnât have.â
He says simply, perhaps signing a little too quickly on that notion. He could recall the almost panicked entry topside to Reach, where most of their Pelicans had been shot out of the air by Anti-Aircraft turrets, and the drop without any sort of parachutes. A fair few died just from that, unable to properly try and fight for their home. Emrys had to keep his helmet on for translation, but at the very least he depolarized his helmet, staring firmly at Carter through forest green eyes. âThereâs a culture between soldiers of âsee you in Hellâ, and dying with your team is the only path to glory, but thatâs a load of shit. If you survive, you need to carry your team with you. Not as a weight, but as strength.â
More rocking back and forth on the soles of his feet. Emrys did have a point. He recalled vividly B312- Artemisâ - guilt over the fact that she had survived after Jorge shoved her out of the Corvette, stating how she should have died and not him. But then, too, he recalled how after Kat had died, the fiery redhead broke in spirit⌠then after that, she was nothing but angry, annihilating the Covenant on the way to SWORD Base and then afterwards.
He glanced away, furrowing his brow and licking his lips in thought. âI just⌠Iâve been with a team for over half my career, building it up from scratch myself time and againâŚ. and I donât know what to do without them.â He rubbed the back of his neck and glanced back - and up - at the other Spartan.
âHow can you live with yourself after you made a sacrifice for your team and you expected to dieâŚonly to survive? I just donât understand.â He sounded weary, sad.
âYou act like theyâre going to come back as ghosts to haunt you. If anything, I guarantee your team will be angry at you for your current behavior.â
Finally, Emrys shifts his stance, crossing his arms. âIf you were CO for Jorge, I know for certain he wouldnât accept this attitude.â

Almost immediately the younger Spartan flinched, realizing his mistake, and his reddish-gold visor drifted downwards. âIâm⌠Iâm sorry,â he said quietly, and he sounded like he really meant it. Communicating properly after everything that had happened, even all those years ago⌠it was tricky. Especially when heâd had to communicate with those of his ilk - the S-IIIs - or ones such as Emrys before him, the S-IIs. âI donât think my response meant to come out like that.â
He fell silent, shame flooding his body in waves, his visor-hidden gaze still fixated on his booted feet. Mismatched⌠everything was mismatchedâŚ
Something else the other Spartan said caught his attention, and his gaze snapped up again.Yes, he was suffering, and he didnât know how to get out of it, or how to make it end. Slowly, he raised his hands and lifted his helm off his head, tucking the object under his arm. He looked much the same as heâd always done - black hair cut close to the skull, electric blue eyes that held dark circles under them that wasnât normal, scars from battles long past on his tanned skin. What was different - something that made him stand out - was the fact that half of the left side of his face was covered in a horrible burn. Marring; disfiguring what once would have been called handsome features.
âI survived something I shouldnât have. And I canât stop thinking that I should have died along with the rest of my team. I feel like I let them down and I donât know how to escape from that.â

He was a figure among figures; an armoured warrior, and one who carried himself like a seasoned veteran, with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Indomitable, clad in royal blue CENTURION-class MJOLNIR with a reddish-gold visor, his hidden gaze swept the area before striding among the crowd of SPARTAN-IVs, though he was set above them not only by the fact that he was taller than some and shorter than others, but too, his weary soul showed in every line of his armoured body. [hosok-tere]
A War Games match was only just finishing, a slight crowd having formed in the viewing areas to watch the whole ordeal go down. This sight was an exceptional one, with a Spartan-II having cast himself into the ring that was until now a IVâs Only sort of zone.Emrys-100â˛s name was emblazoned at the top of the leaderboard, to the mixed reactions of those spectating. Though they had expected the Spartan-II to do well, they didnât anticipate him doing that well. The match wrapped up, with not a single IV tagging a kill onto the him. And when he emerged from the gear room to a thunderous applause, he simply pushed through the crowd in ever present silence.STALKER-Class MJOLNIR Gen2 armor, in a deep black with accents of green, a forest-shaded X shape plastered across his helm. He didnât like the Gen2 at all. Something about it felt foreign, like he didnât belong in it.Now thoroughly uninterested after the show he had just put on, Emrysâ push through the crowd prompted something new to catch his eye. A call sign he didnât recognize in the vicinity. They appeared on his helmet as he looked around, put there in real time in his line of sight by his personal AI.

A nod. âYes. One of few left.â A rueful, bitter smile quirked his lips up of their own accord; though Emrys couldnât see it, he would have heard it bleeding into Carterâs tone. âKind of ironic when you think about it. The War cleaned up the galaxy, including soldiers who are now nothing more than relics of a time long past.â
Yeah, he sure was a ball of sunshine and joy, wasnât he?
But then, the loss of his team, and the injuries to his selfâŚ. they had changed him. He wasnât the same laser-focused, charismatic soldier heâd once been. He was just a broken man, fighting in scraps here and there whenever he felt the urge to spill the blood of enemies onto the dirt of some planet unknown to him.
He shook his head when Emrys apologized. âWeâve all got our scars. Iâm sure youâve noticed mine.â he answered somewhat dryly. âScars take different shapes and forms; whether weâre born with them or we earned them through battle.â
He didnât see disabilities as just disabilities - he saw them as battlescars, war wounds that one carried until the day they died. Whether those that held them thought the same as him, wellâŚthat was up to them.
âGlad to know though thereâs more of Jorgeâs kind left than just Blue Team.â
Thereâs a flash of annoyance from the Spartan-II, only shown through his already sharp stance shifting slightly. Heâd never seen his inability to hear or speak as a disability. âScars are reminders, but what some would refer to as disability is nothing more than something that you should find strength in. So I would disagree that what we respectively have is any bit the same.â He could tell that this younger soldier was suffering, but it was a suffering within his mind and spirit. And the man didnât have the patience for someone who lingered in that darkness on their own accord. Emrysâ deafness allowed him more patience, not having so much noise to overwhelm his thoughts. His deafness allowed him to observe details that other Spartans easily miss in a battlefield. Prosthetics were tools. Though the adjustment period was difficult, they were still extensions of the body. Theyâd only hinder you if you let them. âI can tell youâre struggling, Carter.â

Heâs caught a bit off guard when the stranger in royal blue cut their way through to stop right before his path. Thereâs a tick of silence immediately following his words as they scrawled onto Emrysâ HUD in translation. The Spartan-II brings his hands up to sign back at him, a loose closed fist ânoddedâ a yes in response, followed by a finger spelling of his name and number. E-M-R-Y-S 100. Another tick, and a voice kicked in from the elder Spartanâs helmet. âGreetings, I am Thais, Emrys-100â˛s personal AI. I serve to translate for him, it may be a little jarring if you do not know sign language, and I apologize but I assure you youâll get used to it! From now on unless you address myself personally, I will be speaking for him directly. He does confirm that he is a II, and gave you his name.â Another sign. âDid you need anything?â
For a moment, the CENTURION-clad Spartan was caught off-guard. Sign language. The II only spoke sign language. Perhaps he was deaf, or mute? Maybe even both. For a moment, the thrill of hope shot through him - he wasnât the only Spartan who wasnât 100% able - but what was only a spark flickered and died as quickly as it had come. Why did it matter if there was another disabled Spartan? It wasnât like they had anything aside from that in common?
And he didnât want to get close anyone ever again.
ââŚNo, not particularly. I do know basic sign language but itâs been a long time.â
Again, he rocked back and forth on the soles of his feet, a slight swaying motion that barely translated through his armour, though Emrys would surely catch it regardless.
âIâm âŚ.â For a moment, he hesitated, fighting back the urge to give a number instead of a name, because of the detachment it involved, before deciding that that option was rude. âIâm Commander Carter-A259.â He would have attempted to sign it, but it would have been messy and he probably would have wound up giving the wrong Spartan Company tag plus the respective numbers.
Emrys looks over Carter and his seemingly anxious little idle motions, the swaying on his feet. It briefly reminded him of a civilian child heâd once encountered, and the movements she had made as she stared up in awe at the towering man that had just rescued her and her family. âYouâre one of Kurtâs, then? A III?â Carter seemed... twitchy in comparison to Emrysâ patient stillness. The prosthetics, he took mental note of, but felt no need to think of them any further. They were commonplace in this age. Replacements for what was lost during the war. âApologies again for the strange means of communication. To clarify, I am deaf as well as mute.â
