This Pain Will Be Invisible.

Bill has moved a few times since we found him and it’s been a bit confusing, so this log will cover the entire journey of the Bill statue! he’s almost settled in to his permanent home, but it’s been quiet a trip to get him there, so everything that has happened to the statue up until this point is in this chronological post.

let’s start at the beginning (which is the end of the hunt): on August 2, we found Bill just outside Reedsport, OR.

the next day, August 3, Bill was uninstalled and taken to Reedsport PD. during the takedown, Bill’s hat was detached, but the treasure box stayed with him.

Alex told us there had been a dispute between the owner of the property the statue had been installed on, and that he would be moving the statue to a new location.

on August 5, Reedsport PD then took Bill to Bicentennial Park in Reedsport, about a mile from his original location. the treasure box was also taken to Bicentennial Park, where fans continued to visit Bill and leave gifts.

Bill stayed in Bicentennial park for approximately thirteen total days. sometime during the first ten days, a fan claimed Bill’s hat at the Reedsport Police Department. Gravity Falls Mayor Momo tweeted previously that the hat was infested with a colony of ants—it’s unknown if the hat was claimed in order to purge the ants or for other reasons.

August 15: Alex tweeted first that he was looking for Bill’s hat:

then shortly after, Alex tweeted that he was looking for volunteers to drive Bill from Reedsport to a new, permanent location:

no further information came from Alex regarding Bill’s hat or the volunteer driver, and these tweets were later deleted.

August 18: three days after Alex began making plans to move Bill, tumblr user @halfaperfectsandwich​ went to visit the statue in Bicentennial Park, only to find that Bill was gone! in his place, a sign had been left:

August 19: around twelve hours after the sign was discovered, twitter user Knarkill34 revealed that they were the driver chosen by Alex, and that they had left the sign and moved Bill to his new (undisclosed) location:

August 20: today a group of cipher hunters (on twitter: TheDannyHopkins, SteppBlaise, SaturnInGF, YaGottaFightMe) on a road trip around CA/OR visited Confusion Hill—the location of a previous clue, and one of the stops on the 2013 Mystery Tour—and surprise! found Bill hanging out near the parking lot.

not with Bill at his new spot at Confusion Hill, however, were his hat and the treasure box. the cipher hunters asked the staff if they had the treasure box; the staff did not, but they did have good news!:

Bill should be getting a brand new hat very soon!

it turns out, however, that the treasure box was not transported with Bill:

I would like to quote something I wrote in a Twitter reply, in response to what’s been happening with Paily and Emison fans.

“I, as an Emison shipper, have never taken part in any type of bullying of Paily fans. Most of us haven’t. I understand you wanting to speak out against it, but blaming an entire fandom for something a few very mean people did is not the way to go about it. I’m sorry this has happened to Paily shippers, I truly am, but you’re aiming fire at so many innocent people when you target the entire fandom, and that in itself is quite hurtful. It’s a generalization, a stereotype that all Emison shippers are bullies. Aren’t we, as LGBT minorities ourselves, supposed to be fighting stereotypical thinking?”

I believe you’ll be hard pressed to find a Paily fan who thinks the entire Emison fandom is a bunch of a-holes. (Statistically, there would be some actually). All fandoms have members who we cringe at when they tweet or comment in social media, but I believe that the a-holes in the Emison fandom go well beyond “a couple” or “a few”.

I have a good sized “segment” blocked that I never started a convo with, but they felt they had the right/need to harass and threaten me.

[Truth be told there are a few I have just muted because they did a full on assault to get me to block them. Not letting them win].

But I digress…

My experience is also based on what I see in the Paily tags, tweets at Paily/Paige fans, what people tell me privately, and toward tweets & comments at Lindsey.

I think I can safely say 98/99% of the Paily fandom “stays in their lane” unless provoked by unsolicited tweets and comments. The 1-2% is basically replying/fighting back. They aren’t going after fans or Sasha but the characters. Rarely do they tag/mention first. Again, not saying our fandom isn’t 100% innocent.

[In research, most of the horrid comments toward Sasha and her weight/health have come from two other fandoms. *Halebs stay relatively silent as not to rock their boat].

A “segment” of the Emison fandom on the other hand will interrupt into convos between Paily fans or into tweets by the Paily fans to the cast and crew. (Honestly, they seem to tweet a lot more about Paily than their ship. Hmm secret Paily Shippers).

And for those reading this, if someone relates to a character and you think that character is irrelevant, just move on. We all relate to different things, people, fictional characters, etc in different ways based on our own life experiences.

Anyway…

The “segments” mission and this is directly from them - is to “drag all Paily fans until they are off Twitter” and social media. They succeeded. Sadly. Twitter became a very unsafe and not so fun place for a bunch of LGBT people because a bunch of people felt they were entitled to be asses. MK doesn’t care so it’s a “silent blessing”.

If that “segment” comes after Paily fans, Paily fans have every right to stick up for themselves, other fans, Lindsey, and other castmates…and the character Paige too.

The “segment” tell people to kill themselves (never a joke by the way), have their friends gang up, and then move the attacks to Lindsey - who hasn’t been in the damn show in 18 months!

Lindsey plays a role on a show. She is not Paige. She has done a remarkable job with the role and has embraced her fans who are LGBT and have struggled & succeeded. She has done a lot for the community and she doesn’t deserve the hate just because some are too ignorant to know the difference between a human and a fictional character that really only did one bad thing.

This is how people talk. It’s quite common, and most of the time we barely notice, let alone get offended by it. So OP, it’s cool, most of us know that not every Emison shipper bullies people, but this sort of #notallshippers argument doesn’t engage with the real problem.

Let’s keep things in perspective here. Some Emison shippers are bullying people, trying to silence them, drive them off social media, and literally encouraging people to kill themselves. And some Paily shippers are maybe being a bit too broad in their condemnation of this. I hope it would be obvious that one of these things is much worse than the other. 

More than that, one of these things is the root problem, the other is a response to it. Telling people who are on the receiving end of this sort of victimisation to be more careful with their language is not only unrealistic, it’s a bit crass. It’s making someone else’s pain about your hurt feelings. They are not the problem, and they’ve got enough to deal with as it is.

The fact is, there is a group of spectacularly awful people within the Emison fandom. Not all, not even a majority, but they’re there, and they make a lot of noise. This will affect people’s views of that fandom, and there’s no way around that. Yes, most Emison shippers are perfectly decent people, but that doesn’t cancel the others out. 

The result of this is that while most Emison shippers are nice individually, other fans have good reason to be wary of them collectively. That may feel unfair to fans like yourself who don’t participate in this sort of behaviour, but please understand that it’s a lot worse for the fans being targeted.
