So I got my first Garmin and of course I had to get the latest and greatest, the Garmin Forerunner 620 with the Heart Rate Monitor. I have used it once, and love it!Â
So as context I've only used my iPhone for GPS tracking my runs, using the website and app MapMyRun. This works good but drains battery. In fact I have the iPhone 5s (latest and greatest, right?) and finishing Twin Cities Marathon this past October  my phone died before the end. Now that hasn't happened before (must be the new equipment and iOS), but I digress. Having a dedicated GPS device with all of the functionality frees me to use the iPhone to listen to music, podcasts, etc. and have that lifeline for emergencies.Â
So also as context here's my history if running. I've run 4 marathons with times that range from 4:59 (PR) to 5:27. 1 in 2006 1 in 2011 and 2 in 2013. Multiple 5k's, Â a few 10k's, a few half-marathons, and a 20 mile race. So although I'm no speed demon or a very lean runner (my current weight is about 240lbs and height is 5'10"). In short that explains my moniker iamfatsoirun look for it on Twitter and Tumblr.Â
After running about 3 miles around a nearby lake I was told that my recovery is 64 hours. I find this appalling for two reasons. I set a goal for myself to run 100 total miles before I move across the country in a month.
Secondly because it was only a 3 mile run and I'm supposed to 'recover' for 2.5 days! That doesn't make sense to me. Granted I am no heart expert or running expert. This recovery advisor advice is surely based on a formula that will also need to be highly refined overtime with more input. And yes this was sort of a crappy run. But hey everyone has crappy runs, and I'm just trying to get back in the groove of running regularly. Wind was blowing in my face, I haven't run in a bit, let alone regularly. I was in a funk. However that's the thing about runs, you'll have a sucky run, a great run, a slow run, a fast run. It doesn't matter as long as you get out there and run! With all exercise consistence is what makes it better, you better at it. So I'll end it here with further updates on my runs and experience with my toys, to come later. This is a non-athlete's running blog in the hopes of becoming an athlete and lose weight in the process. So let me know you think in the comments because I write this for myself but also for you out there who are looking for a place to fit in if you aren't an athlete but looking to get your butt in shape.
