Unpopular opinion about Jaime’s arc
So here is my probably unpopular opinion about Jaime’s arc during the last season of GOT. Sorry for my not so perfect English.
I keep seeing these hateful posts about Jaime’s arc being ruined in season 8 and I disagree.
Here’s why:
1) Jaime’s relationship with Cersei has lasted for over 40 years and not just as lovers, but as family too. For all of their lives they were the closest people to each other. Even though this relationship has been toxic, it is impossible to undo all it’s aftermath it in a couple of months (or even years). It just doesn’t work that way in life.
2) When Jaime came back to KL, so he could save Cercei, I think he was behaving more like a brother than a lover. Let’s not forget how important family has always been to Jaime. I thought their last scene has heartbreaking, but not in a romantic way. I think they looked like 2 people who’ve been together through a lot.
3) I do really think he truly loved Brienne, but due to his self-destructing tendencies, could not allow himself to be happy for once.
4) Jaime’s return to KL does not undo all the character development during season 3-7. He came back not to assist Cersei in destroying Dany’s army. He came back because he wanted to save one of the most important people in his life, who is also pregnant with his baby.
Jaime/Brienne dynamic is one of my most favorite things about this show and I do understand why everyone is upset (I am too). But I do think these two have have changed each other for the better and found true love even for a little while. And I did love seeing Brienne in the last episode – not heartbroken and in tears, but strong as ever. Strong enough to work and strong enough to forgive.
I guess that is enough for me.
