Generative Design Variations 2 Geometry, Discovering programmed design, Henk Lamers. Jeanne de Bont and I have written and designed the second chapter of my Generative Design Variations project. This second chapter (of ten) is about geometry. There are plenty of books that teach you how to program. However, in this publication there not one line of code. It describes a part of the journey that I have made to use programming for the creation of graphics in 2D and 3D. This chapter, and all future chapters to come are free to read for everyone who is interested.

I watched a last video of course Programming Graphics I: Introduction to Generative Art by Joshua Davis on SkillShare some days ago and had to use my brand new knowledge.
I know the project is quite imperfect, by who knows, maybe i will never make another step. So here are my previous steps.
Get the maps! I used software like this the firs time and have a feel here are some more efficient ways. I got QGIS, I got shapefile and managed (thanks to google) how to take streets and buildings from there to separate pdfs. I know it seems weird but getting all the stuff in one file from opensteetmap gives you a whole ton of time to separate what you need and don't.
Get the palette! I found a beautiful painting in the Wikipedia (Alexander Square in 1850 by Evgraf Fedorovich Krendovsky) blurred the picture and saved it as a gif with limited palette. Next, I put the file in Color Picking tool. Some tuning and I got i bunch of colors.
Get the assets! I used 3 separate groups of assets. a) letters and digits of Blogger Sans font, b) parts of the streets, c) groups of buildings
Get the code! Actually I found out that the best way is to write and test parts of code while getting previous parts. I used two HGridLayouts for streets and buildings and HPixelColorist for letters. Letters was the first I coded.
Get the picture! I was quite happy with the original output, but spent a hour or so tweaking it inside Adobe Illustrator for better result.
The last step was to write this post. And post it.

Recommendation time again!
Henk Lamerās has been patiently working his way through the excellent book āGenerative Gestaltungā for several months now and you can see the resulting images, their code and his reasoning behind the different iterations, chapter by chapter, on his main blogĀ and on his Flickr page. But he has now started his own Tumblr too, which may help to make his work more known and easier to share.
So check him out and follow him if you like what you see.

I want to watch these videos ā before I take any new free MOOC or paid course. Although I am not a total beginner and could't finish the first Shiffman's book, I greatly appreciate him as teacher and one of the power sources of Processing communtiy.
