Long Overdue Conversations - Part 4 (Emma & Killian) A OUAT missing scene
Here is another conversation I feel should have taken place in Once Upon a Time. This one occurs immediately after the 'You traded your ship for me' scene at the end of season 3.
THIS PART IS RATED M!
Previous installments can be found on Tumblr: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3
All parts can also be found on Ao3 & FFN
Special thanks to @hookedmom who always makes my stories better with her beta skills and suggestions for making this scene better (and hotter!)
*********
âYou traded your ship for me?â Emma asked, amazement evident in her voice.
Killian gave a slight nod. âAye.â
Then she was kissing him. Not a bruising and frantic kiss like the one in Neverland, but a tender, passionate one that took his breath away all the same. At one point, he had to draw back to look at her, just to make sure he wasnât dreaming. When she smiled at him and rested her forehead against his, he caressed her cheek, running her silky hair through his fingers, before capturing her willing lips once again.
Their moment was interrupted when Leroy and one of his brothers came bursting through the door of Grannyâs, drunkenly singing. It was all Killian could do to keep himself from throttling the dwarfs, but Emma simply squeezed his hand and gave him a soft smile.
âIf you donât have your ship anymore, where are you staying?â she asked.
âThe widow Lucas granted me a room at her bed and breakfast.â
âHmmâŚâ Emma hummed in thought.
Killian tilted his head, waiting for her to continue. After a moment of silence, he asked, âWhatâs on your mind, Swan?â
Leaning in, she brushed her lips across his cheek. âGive me a minute to say goodbye to my family. Iâll be right back.â
He watched her rise from her seat and ascend the steps into the diner. Before disappearing inside, she turned and smiled at him reassuringly.
While he waited, he touched his fingers to his lips, just as he had after their first kiss. He loved the feeling of Emma Swanâs lips on his and wanted it to linger. Hopefully, he wouldnât have to wait nearly as long to feel them again.
Sooner than he expected, Emma was back out the door. When she reached him, she took him by the hand, encouraging him to get to his feet. âCome on, pirate.â
âWhere are we going, Love?â
She gave him a secretive smile. âTo your room.â
In a near state of shock, he followed behind her as she led the way, still gripping his hand tightly. When they entered the lobby, Emma asked, âWhatâs your room number?â
âUmâŚfour,â he stammered.
âSeriously? Thatâs the room I had when I first came to town.â
âAye, the widow Lucas did mention that fact when she gave me the key.â
He trailed closely behind her up the stairs, his hand on the small of her back. He was hesitant to break physical contact with her, for fear she would suddenly disappear. It was Storybrooke, after all.
When they reached his door, he fumbled for the key. Finally withdrawing it from the inside pocket of his leather duster, it slipped from his fingers, clattering to the floor.
Emma bent down and picked it up, smirking as she held it between her fingers. âNervous, Captain?â she asked, before inserting it into the lock and turning it. The door swung open and they quickly crossed the threshold.
âIâm still trying to determine if this is indeed real, or simply my imagination,â he said. He closed the door and leaned back against it, gripping his belt buckle as he looked up at her through his dark lashes.
âHave you imagined this?â she asked, batting her own lashes at him.
He poked his tongue into his cheek, then ran it over his bottom teeth before answering. âPerhaps.â
Stepping closer, she leaned up to whisper in his ear. âMove away from the door.â
Quirking a curious brow at her, he did as instructed. She held her hands up with her palms flat and facing the door. Closing her eyes, she concentrated until a soft glow emanated from them. Then she moved them slowly to trace around the entire frame of the door.
When she finished, she dropped her hands and turned to face him. Seeing the slight confusion on his face, she explained, âSilencing spell. Granny has supernatural hearing, remember?â
âYouâre bloody brilliant, Swan.â He closed the distance between them, reaching up to sift her blonde locks through his fingers, his deep blue eyes boring into hers. âNow that weâre aloneâŚâ
Emma shrugged out of her leather jacket and let it drop to the floor, then ran her hands up the front of his vest and under the shoulders of his heavy, leather coat. Understanding her intention, he pulled his arms free when she pushed it off of him.
âJust how much does that thing weigh?â she asked. âAnd how the hell do you wear it around all the time?â
He grinned at her. âIs that really what you want to think about right now, Love?â
âYou have a point. Besides,â she said mischievously, âIâm sure youâve carried rum barrels heavier than that, right?â
His brows furrowed. âCome again?â
âJust something your former self said when he was carrying me onto hisâŚyourâŚship.â
âBloody wanker,â he grumbled. âI should have hit him harder.â
She began undoing the fasteners on his vest. âIs that really what you want to think about right now?â she asked, echoing his words.
âToo right, Love.â
Once the vest joined his coat on the floor, he removed his hook and placed it on the dresser. Then Emma slid his suspenders off his shoulders and started working on the tiny buttons of his billowy, black shirt. âHow do you manage these things with one hand? I canât unbutton them with two.â
âI donât mess with the buttons. I simply slide it on over my head.â
âThat explains why itâs always open practically to your waist.â
âYouâve noticed that, have you?â he asked with a knowing smirk.
âKinda hard to miss it, with your whole chest on display.â Lifting her eyes to meet his, she abandoned the buttons and slowly ran her fingers through the hair on his chest that had been teasing her ever since she met him in the Enchanted Forest. Hearing him gasp at the contact, she added, âIâve been wanting to do this for a very long time.â
As her fingertips continued to explore, he dipped his head to capture her lips, his own calloused fingers finding their way under the hem of her turtleneck. He caressed the soft skin he found there, and she moaned into the kiss, âKillianâŚâ
The breathy sound of his name from her sweet lips had him growing hard in an instant. âSwan,â he mumbled, âare youâŚare you quite sure about this, Love?â
She pulled back to look at him, her pupils dilated with desire. âI told my parents I wouldnât be home tonight, brought you up to your room, and used magic to make sure no one would hear us. Does that sound like someone who isnât sure?â
âYou told your parents you were going to be with me tonight?â
âYes. Now, if you donât mind, Iâd rather not talk about them anymore.â
âAgreed,â he chuckled. âWhere were we?â
âRight about here,â she said, crossing her arms to grab the bottom of her sweater, then pulling it over her head.
Killian could feel his heartbeat increase as his eyes roamed over her newly bared skin. He would be lying if he said he hadnât longed for this scenario, but never could he have imagined the absolute perfection of Emma Swan.
âYour turn,â she said, grasping the hem of his shirt to tug it over his head. He tried to stand still as her hands explored the expanse of his chest, moved over his shoulders and down his arms.
He was so busy enjoying her touch and taking in her beautiful form, he had forgotten about his battered, leather brace. When her fingers found it, he involuntarily took a step backwards, pulling his arm away from her.
âHey, itâs okay,â she said soothingly. âIt doesnât bother me.â
His hand rubbed absentmindedly over the brace. âItâŚitâs ugly, Swan. Itâs been a very long time since Iâve allowed anyone to see it.â
âYou donât have to hide it from me, Killian. Itâs part of you and IâŚwell, nothing about you could make meâŚcare for you any less.â
Slowly, he stepped back into her space, his eyes never leaving hers. With practiced fingers, he deftly undid the buckles. After hesitating a few moments, he grasped the brace and twisted it off of his arm. Emma took it from him and laid it on the dresser beside his hook, as he removed the protective cloth covering his stump.
She locked eyes with him again, before dropping her gaze to his arm. Placing one hand under his elbow, she lifted it up while the fingers of her other hand gently traced the raised, jagged scars. âIt must have been so painful,â she said quietly.
He swallowed hard, his jaw clenching at the memory. âIâŚI donât remember feeling pain when heâŚwhen he cut it off. Iâd just witnessed him murder Milah and that pain overshadowed everything else. It wasnât until later, when a crew member cauterized it, that I finally realized how much it hurt. By that time, my grief and anger had taken over and all I wanted to focus on was plotting my revenge.â
Emma bent to press a kiss to the end of his wrist. âIâm so sorry you had to go through that, Killian.â
âItâs long in the past, Love. I would much rather look toward the future.â Using his finger to lift her chin, he gave her a smile. Then he wrapped his arms around her and pulled her closer. âA future that includes you, I hope.â
In answer, she fused her lips to his, her hands beginning to roam freely over his body. When she slid her hands down inside the back of his trousers and squeezed his ass, he sucked in a ragged breath. âBloody hell, Swan,â he growled.
âWhatâs the matter, Captain? Canât you handle it?â
Before she could utter another word, he skillfully flicked open the button on her jeans and unzipped them. âLetâs see who canât handle it, shall we?â Then his hand was inside her panties, cupping her mound.
Her surprised gasp turned to a moan of pleasure as his long fingers slid through her slick folds. âIâve barely touched you and youâre already this wet?â he asked, his voice low and husky in her ear.
âIâŚIâve wanted this ever sinceâŚâ She stopped talking and bit her lip.
âSince when, Swan?â he queried.
âSinceâŚNeverland,â she admitted.
Hearing her finally confess her feelings made his own surge through him in a hot rush. He withdrew his hand and lifted her off the floor. Carrying her across the room, he deposited her on the bed. âTake off your boots,â he commanded, beginning to toe off his own.
She happily complied, then began pushing her jeans down her legs. When they reached her knees, she looked up and felt like all of the oxygen had been sucked out of the room.
Killian was standing in front of her, arms crossed over his chest, dressed in nothing but his leather pants. They were straining against the huge bulge that was right at her eye level. Without conscious thought, her hands reached for him, rubbing his rigid member through the leather.
He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply, exhaling the words, âIâve wanted this for a very long time, too, Emma.â
âThen letâs not wait any longer.â
Her fingers set to work unfastening his pants to free his cock, which she promptly began to stroke. At the same time, he reached behind her and worked at the hooks of her bra. When they were undone, his hand and wrist tugged on the straps and her hands left his shaft long enough to wiggle out of it.
While she resumed her exploration of his sizable cock, he fondled her breasts - squeezing, pinching, rubbing and caressing them, murmuring words of praise for their perfection.
Killian suddenly realized how quickly they were working each other up, and put his hand over Emmaâs to stop her stroking. âCan weâŚcan we slow down just a bit, Love? I donât want this to be over too soon.â
âYeah, okay,â she said breathlessly. âWhy donât we finish getting undressed?â
âAye,â he agreed.
Both of them removed their remaining clothes and as Emma laid down in the middle of the bed, she pulled Killian down beside her. He pushed himself up to lean on his left elbow, his fingers dancing along the skin of her belly. âGods, Love. Iâve never seen a more beautiful woman than you. Youâre absolutely stunning.â
Her hand moved up his forearm and bicep, tracing the hard muscles. âSo are you, Killian.â
They explored each otherâs body with their hands and mouths, whispered words spoken against skin, between kisses, licks and nips. When Killianâs fingers found their way once again to Emmaâs most intimate place, she bucked into his hand, clearly craving more.
He nudged her legs further apart with his knee, then slowly slid one finger into her warm, wet channel. âTell me how that feels, Love,â he implored.
âFeelsâŚamazing,â she complied, her eyes closing of their own accord and her breath coming out in short gasps.
After gliding in and out of her a few times, he pulled his eyes away from the sight to look up at her. âAre you ready for more?â
She nodded her head, biting her lip in anticipation.
On the next pass, he added a second digit. âSo bloody perfect, taking me like that, Swan.â
âKillian, Iâm going toâŚyouâre going to make meâŚâ she muttered, trying to speak a coherent sentence.
âDonât hold back. Just let it happen and enjoy it, Love.â
She took his advice and soon she was clenching tightly around his fingers, the evidence of her orgasm further slickening his fingers. As she throbbed around them, he sought friction by rubbing his hard erection against her thigh, then sucked one of her nipples into his mouth.
âKilliannnâŚâ she moaned throatily.
He withdrew his fingers and chuckled lowly against her breast over her huff of annoyance. âPatience, Love. I have something much moreâŚfulfillingâŚfor that greedy quim.â
Instantly, she shifted onto her side and reached down to grasp his cock. âIâm ready when you are,â she breathed hotly into his ear.
With a growl, he flipped her onto her back, causing her to let out a little yelp of surprise. Then he swung himself over her body, hovering over her. Nuzzling into her neck, he murmured, âI donât know if you noticed, but I was quite taken with that dress we pilfered during our adventure.â
âYou mean the oneâŚthat made me look likeâŚa bar wench?â she gasped, enjoying what his mouth was doing to her collarbone.
âMmm, aye,â he hummed. âIt certainly made you quiteâŚdistracting. And very enticing. I wanted to bury my face right here.â He licked up between her breasts, chuckling again when she uttered a curse.
Emmaâs hands slid between them and wrapped around his girth. Widening her legs, she dragged the tip through her soaked folds. At his groan, she whispered, âYou did promise to fulfill me, so fill me, Captain.â
He lifted his head to look into her face, giving her a grin. âAs you wish.â
Her hand guided him to where she was aching for him and he slowly pushed into her, inch by glorious inch. Her legs wrapped around his hips, hands moving to scratch along his back, which added to the pleasure he was already experiencing from being buried inside the woman for whom heâd been yearning for months. He dropped his head to her chest, giving her a moment to adjust to him, while getting himself under control so he wouldnât be on the verge too soon.
When he finally began to move, it was at a slow, steady pace. Experimenting with different angles, he took note of what brought the most response from her.
After several blissful minutes, she murmured, âKillianâŚâ
âYes, Love?â
âMake me see stars,â she requested breathlessly, reaching behind him to squeeze his buttocks almost painfully.
He kissed her and grinned slyly, determined to meet her challenge. Dropping to his elbows on either side of her, he began thrusting faster and deeper, until he was plunging into her with abandon, eliciting a loud exclamation from her each time he filled her.
He was getting close to his peak, but didnât want to reach it before she did, so he caught her nipple in his mouth again, alternating flicking it with his tongue and sucking hard. His actions had the desired effect and soon she was screaming through her release, her head thrashing on the pillow, while her throbbing cunt rippled along his engorged cock.
âBloodyâŚfuckingâŚhell,â he grunted, thrusting eratically, until he exploded, filling her with streams of his hot release. Not wanting to crush her, he rolled them over, sprawling her sweat-slicked body over his own.
Neither knew how long they laid there, trying to get their breathing and heart rates under control. He heard her mumble something into his chest, but couldnât make out the words. Raising his leaden arm, he brushed her hair away from her face. âWhat did you say, Love?â
She lifted her face to peer into his. âYou did it.â
âDid what?â he asked, thoroughly puzzled.
âMade me see starsâŚand several planets.â
He laughed, then pressed a kiss to the crown of her head. âIâm glad to hear it, because you definitely did the same for me.â
âGood thing I soundproofed the room, huh?â
âAye, Love. I donât think I would be able to meet Grannyâs eyes tomorrow morning if you hadnât.â
It was her turn to laugh. As they lay in silence, she skimmed her fingers through the hair on his chest, enjoying the sighs of pleasure from him.
After several peaceful minutes, Emma said, âKillian?â
âHmm?â
âI would have chosen you.â
He opened his eyes to see her looking at him earnestly. âChosen me for what?â
âRemember back in Neverland when you told me I would have to choose between you and Neal?â
âAye.â
âEven if Neal hadnâtâŚdied, I still would have chosen you.â
He lifted his head from the pillow to peer at her more closely. âTruly?â
âYeah. Well, to be honest, it wasnât ever a contest between the two of you.â She watched him studying her closely, before adding, âIs that difficult for you to believe?â
âI saw how much his death impacted you and thought perhaps, given the chance, the two of you might have rekindled your relationship.â
âWe actually had a really nice conversation just before I realized he was sharing a body with his father, and I felt like we were in a good place with each other at the end. Neal will always be my first love and Henryâs father, so he has a special spot in my heart; butâŚafter what he did to me, I would have never been able to completely trust him. You, on the other hand, have never given me any reason not to trust you. Youâve proven time and time again that youâre in my corner, that you believe in meâŚâ
âOf course I do, Emma. Youâre the most determined and assiduous woman Iâve ever met. I trust you with my lifeâŚand my heart.â
She tilted her head and smiled softly. âI trust you with mine, too. I think you know me well enough to know I didnât come to that decision lightly.â
He reached up to twist a lock of her hair around his finger. âAye, that I do. I feel incredibly honored to hold your trust, Love, especially when not so very long ago, you chained me at the top of a beanstalk because you didnât trust me.â
âThatâs not why I chained you there.â
âNo?â he questioned.
She shook her head. âIf you recall, I told you I couldnât take the chance of being wrong about you. Even then, I sensed I could trust you, and that scared the shit out of me.â
âThatâs because you thought I was nothing but a pirate, as did the rest of your family. Your father used those exact words in Neverland.â
âYeah, well, you proved us all wrong.â She cupped his face in the palm of her hand. âYouâre a good man, Killian Jones.â
He smiled. âDuring our adventure back in the Enchanted Forest, when Dave didnât know who I was, he told me your parents would be crazy not to approve of me as your suitor. I told him I hoped he would remember that.â
âHeâs coming around. Give him time and youâll probably end up being his best friend.â
He wrapped his arms around her more tightly, taking advantage of having her naked form pressed against him. She laid her head on his chest, humming happily.
Later, when they were cleaned up and she was asleep in his arms, wearing nothing but one of his thin black shirts, their conversation ran through his mind again. When Neal died, he saw how grief-stricken Emma was, and assumed she would have chosen the other man, had he lived. He was Henryâs father, after all, and Killian thought that connection between Emma and Neal would be enough for her to try to make their relationship work.
Hearing her say she would have chosen Killian made him happier than he had been for centuries. He fell asleep with his nose buried in her hair and a smile on his face. Tomorrow, they would probably face some sort of crisis, but tonight, Emma Swan was his and hopefully would remain his for the long haul.

âPardon me, lass. Is that seat taken?â
Emma Swan looked up from the program she had been scanning, to see a man standing in the aisle of the auditorium, looking at her expectantly.
âExcuse me?â she asked.
âI was wondering if you were saving the seat beside you for someone.â
She glanced at the empty seat to her left. âUh, no. Iâm not saving it for anyone.â
After an awkward pause, he asked, âIn that case, would you mind if I sit there?â
âOh, sorry.â She stood up, letting him pass in front of her.
When they were settled in their seats, he said, âThanks very much.â Holding out his hand, he added, âKillian Jones.â
âEmma Swan,â she responded, shaking his hand. âItâs nice to meet you. I donât think Iâve seen you around Storybrooke before.â
âI live in Portland. I visit from time to time, and stay at my brother Liamâs house when I do. Iâm here to watch his and Elsaâs daughters. Theyâre the two cutest reindeer.â
âMissy and Alice are your nieces? Theyâre in my son Henryâs class. In fact, I think he has a crush on one of them.â
âWhich one?â
She shrugged. âIâm not sure. They both look alike to me.â
âWell,â he chuckled, âthatâs quite common with identical twins.â
She laughed. âYou have a point there.â
âIs your son also a reindeer?â
âI wish,â she sighed. âReindeer are quiet. My son is the little drummer boy. My friend is the music teacher and Iâm pretty sure she cast him in that role intentionallly. Her husband has been dying to buy Henry a drum set ever since he was a toddler, but I keep telling him absolutely not. Of course, once my son got the part, he had to practice, so Mary Margaret sent a snare drum home with him. I can hardly wait until this program is over, so I can get that freaking thing out of my house. I love my kid, but heâs driving me crazy with it!â
Killianâs grin stretched wider across his handsome face. âWell, I can assure you that reindeer are not quiet. At least, not in Alice and Missyâs case.â
âIâm sure having two ten-year-olds in the house can be very loud. I only have one and sometimes I swear heâs trying to split my eardrums.â
âWith his drum,â Killian smirked.
âYouâre hilarious,â Emma groaned sarcastically, rolling her eyes. However, she couldnât help grinning a little at his attempt to make a joke.
âAre you, uh, are you sure Iâm not takingâŚanyoneâs seat?â he asked tentatively.
âIf youâre talking about Henryâs father, he wonât be coming. He lives in New York City with his other family. Henry only gets to see him a couple of times a year.â
âIâm sorry to hear that.â
âDonât be. The less time Henry spends with his dad, the smaller the chance Henry will act like him. After six years, heâs used to taking a back seat to Nealâs other kids.â
She opened the paper she was holding again, scanning the information typed inside. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Killian leaning in slightly to have a look at it, too.
âDidnât they give you a program at the door?â she asked.
âThey were out by the time I got here. I left work as soon as I could, but barely made it. Liam and Elsa werenât expecting me to come tonight, so they didnât save a seat for me.â
Emma swiped across her phone to look at the time. âTheyâre getting started a few minutes late. Thatâs typical for Mary Margaret because she wants everything to be perfect. Sheâs probably still gluing cotton balls onto Santaâs beard.â Scooting over in her seat a couple of inches, she held the program between them. âIâll share with you. Looks like Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer is the next-to-last song.â
Killian perused the offered page. âYour drummer boy looks to be the star of the third song.â
âPa-rum-pa-pum-pum,â she intoned. He chuckled.
The lights dimmed and Mary Margaret hurried onto the stage as the crowd applauded.
âShow time,â Emma commented, then straightened in her seat to listen as her friend welcomed everyone.
*********
Killian shifted in the cushioned chair and tried to focus on what the lovely, pixie-haired teacher was saying. It wasnât that he didnât want to pay attention; rather, it was the distraction of the beautiful woman to his right which was occupying his mind. Through no fault of her own, she was making it very difficult for him to concentrate on the acknowledgements of all of the people responsible for helping with the elementary school Christmas pageant.
When she looked up at him after he inquired about the empty seat beside her, he was instantly struck by her beauty. It had been a long time since he gave any woman a second glance. Having his heart broken three years before caused him to swear off of women for good, and he stuck to it.
He may have to rethink that.
Being intrigued by her looks was one thing, but when she began conversing with him, he was struck by how easy it was to talk to her. She was witty and sarcastic, and put him at ease immediately.
When he verified that he wasnât taking anyoneâs seat, it was also his subtle way of asking if she was in a relationship. He had discreetly checked her ring finger and saw it was bare, but wanted further assurance. He was probably assuming too much by thinking her answer about her ex was proof she was indeed single, because she could be dating someone else. But if she was, that man would surely show up to her sonâs Christmas pageant, wouldnât he?
As crazy as it sounded, after knowing her for all of five minutes, Killian was seriously thinking of asking her out.
*********
Emma could feel the nearness of the man beside her and, shockingly enough, she didnât mind at all. In fact, she actually found herself leaning toward him.
Her friend Elsa mentioned her brother-in-law to Emma several times, but she had never met him or seen a picture of him. If she had, she definitely would have remembered, because the man was ridiculously handsome. She probably seemed like an idiot when he asked about the empty seat beside her and she didnât tell him he could sit there right away. She was simply gobsmacked when she looked up at him and had trouble getting her mind to work.
Fortunately, once he sat down, words were easier and the conversation she had with him was very enjoyable. She found herself wishing he had gotten there sooner, so they could have had more time to chat before the pageant began. It had been quite a while since she actually wanted more time to talk to a man. Usually, she wanted them to shut up and leave her alone.
Finding someone to date in Storybrooke was not an easy feat. Not that she put much effort into it. After what she went through with Neal, she swore off dating altogether. He not only broke her heart by leaving her for another woman, he told her he never loved her in the first place and the only reason he stayed with her as long as he did was because she was careless enough to get pregnant. He didnât seem to realize that he had a little something to do with her ending up in that condition, too. She didnât regret it, though. Henry was the best thing that ever happened to her. She had been telling herself for years that she loved her kid and he was the only male she needed in her life.
How absurd was it for her to want a chance to get better acquainted with Killian Jones so soon after meeting him?
*********
Killianâs whirlpool of thoughts was interrupted when music began playing and the third and fourth grade students trooped onto the stage to stand on the risers, all of them dressed in homemade costumes for their various roles.
Leaning over, he quietly asked, âWhich one is Henry?â
Emma pointed. âThe one with the jeans chopped off at the knees, white shirt and a vest made out of a cut up paper bag. Real professional, huh? He reminded me last night that he needed a costume, so itâs the best I could do.â
âI think itâs very effective. Heâs supposed to be a poor boy, right?â
They fell silent when a little girl dressed as Mrs. Claus stepped to the microphone to introduce the first song. As Killian tried to lay his elbow on the arm rest, he bumped Emmaâs, which was already there.
âSorry, Love,â he whispered, tucking his arm against his side.
âWe can share,â she whispered back, scooting her arm over to give him some room. Under normal circumstances, he would have passed on the offer, but he quite liked how it felt to touch her. Once their elbows were both on the arm rest, he turned his attention back to the stage, where the students dressed as elves were lining up to lead the song Have a Holly, Jolly Christmas, while Mary Margaret was taking her seat behind the piano.
âYou were right,â Emma muttered. âYour nieces are the cutest reindeer.â
âOf course they are. They take after their uncle,â he cheeked.
Mary Margaret launched into the accompaniment before Emma could reply.
Frosty the Snowman followed, with students dressed as snow people spinning and dancing on the stage. One snowman twirled himself dizzy and almost fell off of the stage. Luckily, David was quick on his feet, catching the little boy and preventing disaster.
âI can guarantee Iâll hear about what a hero he was for days from Mary Margaret,â Emma remarked as they clapped at the end of the song.
âYour boy is up next,â Killian reminded her.
âOh, yeah,â she said, scrambling to pull her phone out of her purse.
âWould you like me to take the video so you can sit back and enjoy his performance?â
She looked at him. âYou wouldnât mind?â
âNot at all. It would be my pleasure.â
Emma quickly unlocked her phone, pulled up the camera app and set it to video. âYou know how to do this, right?â
He chuckled as he took it from her hands. âDonât worry, Swan. Iâm a twenty-first century man, so I do know a fair amount about technology.â
Henry took his place behind the snare drum and smiled widely at his mom. However, once the song started, he was all business, taking his drum solo very seriously. After filming the entire group of students during the first verse, Killian zoomed in on Henry for the rest of the song, capturing his solemn expression as he struck the drum in perfect rhythm.
At the conclusion of the song, Killian turned the phone toward Emma, who was clapping loudly and shouting, âWay to go, kid!â Through the lens, Killian could see the sheen of proud tears in her eyes. He didnât stop filming until she turned to him to get her device back.
âThank you,â she said. âIâm glad I could enjoy it without having to watch him through my phone screen.â
âNo problem,â he assured her. âHe did a wonderful job. He just might have a future as a drummer in a band.â
âI hope heâs out on his own by then if he does. I donât think I could handle all of the practicing.â
Killian chuckled and settled back in his seat to enjoy the next two songs. When it was time for the reindeer to take their place at the front of the stage, he dug his own phone out of the front pocket of his jeans.
âHere, Iâll return the favor,â Emma said, reaching for the phone. âEnjoy your niecesâ performance.â
âThanks, Love,â he said gratefully.
The song went well until one of the twins accidentally stepped on the other oneâs foot, who then pushed the unwitting culprit. A short shoving match ensued between the two of them, until Mary Margaret snapped her fingers at them with one hand, while continuing to play the piano with the other.
Killian scanned the crowd to find his brother and sister-in-law. Liam was trying, and failing, to keep a grin off of his face, while Elsa scowled ferociously at her rowdy daughters.
The rest of the song went on without further incident. When Emma handed his phone back, Killian remarked, âI think the girls might be in for it after this is over.â
âYeah, Elsa looks pretty peeved.â
âDo you know her?â
âWe got to know each other through the PTO, and weâve become pretty good friends.â
âPTO?â he questioned.
âParent-teacher organization. We do fundraisers to give the school and staff extra things the district doesnât provide. We also sponsor fun events for students and their parents, like skating parties and bingo nights.â
âIt sounds very beneficial,â Killian commented.
Mary Margaret announced that the final song was Silent Night and after the students sang it through once, the audience was encouraged to join in.
The children, who had just sung Rudolph loudly and exuberantly, now sang the beloved carol with great reverence. A hush fell over the crowd as they listened to the sweet voices. Killian turned his eyes toward Emma and saw her swallow hard, clearly trying to keep her emotions in check. He was a little emotional himself and he didnât even have a child on the stage.
Killian added his rich baritone the second time through. He could hear Emmaâs voice and wasnât at all surprised that it was as lovely as the lady herself.
As the final notes faded away, she turned to look at him. He smiled and winked, beginning to clap with the rest of the audience. When the ovation was over, she quickly collected her coat and purse. âI have to go get Henry from his classroom. IâŚit was nice meeting you, Killian. Maybe weâll see each other the next time you come to town.â
He looked stunned. âAye, Swan, perhaps we will.â
With a final wave, she was gone, swallowed up by the crowd.
*********
As he watched her walk away, Killian felt like kicking himself. He just let her go, without asking her out or even requesting her phone number. He was sure he wasnât the only one who felt the connection between the two of them, but now it was too late to act on it.
She did say she was Elsaâs friend, so perhaps he could get Emmaâs information from his sister-in-law. That was less than ideal, but it might be his only option.
He sighed, grabbed his coat from the chair and set off to locate his family.
*********
Emma hated leaving the way she did, but she knew Henry would be waiting for her. Telling her son how proud she was of him, trumped hanging around to talk to Killian some more. She truly hoped she would run into him again, sometime.
She wished she would have been bold enough to ask him for his phone number. Of course, she could always get it from Elsa, but that would mean telling her friend she was interested in her brother-in-law. Emma didnât really want to open that can of worms.
So as she fought her way through the crowd, disappointment rose up within her because she knew she was leaving behind the first guy who drew her interest in a very long time.
*********
âWhereâs Elsa?â Killian asked, once he found Liam still occupying the seat he sat in during the performance.
âShe went to get the girls. I offered, but she insisted. She may knock their heads together after their antics on stage.â
Killian laughed. âNever a dull moment with those two, is there?â
âNot a single one. Thanks for coming, brother,â Liam said, standing up to clap Killian on the shoulder.
âI wouldnât have missed it for the world. I told Missy and Alice I would try to make it and I didnât want to let them down.â
âYouâre a good uncle.â
âThe best,â Killian smirked. Then his face took on a serious expression. âMay I ask you something?â
âSure. Whatâs on your mind?â
âUhâŚhow well do you knowâŚEmma Swan?â
Liamâs brows raised. âShe and Elsa are good friends, so I know her pretty well. Why do you ask?â
Killian scratched behind his ear. âI, umâŚI sat beside her this evening. I never met her before, but IâŚsheâŚshe seems very nice.â
Liam studied his brother for several moments. âAre you interested in her?â he queried.
His brother shrugged. âI justâŚwe had a good conversation and I thought aboutâŚâ
When he didnât continue, Liam supplied, âAsking her out?â
Killian shrugged again. âI know. Itâs a stupid idea. I mean, I just met her and we only talked for a few minutes, butâŚâ
Liam stepped in front of him, placing both hands on his brotherâs shoulders. âKillian, I know you had a rough go of it with Milah, but you canât go through life never taking a chance again.â
âEmma probably wouldnât acceptâŚâ
âYou wonât know unless you try.â
âIt doesnât matter anyway. She went to collect her son and then theyâll leave.â
âThen weâll go find her before they do.â
âLiamâŚâ
âKillian, a man unwilling to fight for what he wants, deserves what he gets.â
Killian considered his brotherâs words for a few seconds. âYouâre right. Letâs go see if sheâs still here.â
The pair took off through the nearly empty auditorium. Liam led Killian down one hallway, then nearly ran into Elsa and the girls when they turned the corner.
âThere are my lovely ladies,â Liam said, kissing first one of his daughters on the head, then the other. âGood job, my little reindeer.â Seeing the stern look Elsa was giving him, he added, âBut perhaps next time you shouldnât stand right next to each other.â
âIt was Missyâs fault,â Alice began, before being cut off by her mother.
âIâve already talked to you about this,â Elsa reprimanded. âYou were both at fault and tomorrow, you will both apologize to Mrs. Nolan.â
âYes, maâam,â they chorused. Then they rushed to get a hug from their uncle.
âYou came!â Alice cried.
âTold you he would,â Missy said. âUncle Killy would never let us down, would you?â
âI canât promise that I never will, but Iâll try my very best not to,â he assured them, one arm wrapped around each twin.
Liam pulled Elsa aside. âDid you see Emma?â he asked.
âYes, she was picking up Henry at the same time I was getting the girls,â his wife answered. âWhy?â
Lowering his voice so their daughters wouldnât hear, he said, âKillian sat beside her during the performance and they seemed to hit it off. He was hoping to catch her before she left and ask her out.â
Elsaâs expression went from very excited to downcast. âIâm afraid theyâre gone already.â
Killian caught what she said and his heart sank. He knew he missed his chance when he let her walk away.
Elsa saw the look on her brother-in-lawâs face. âGirls, hug your uncle and tell him goodbye. Iâm sure he needs to start back to Portland soon.â
Missy and Alice took turns getting big bear hugs from Killian, then Liam bid him goodbye and took the girls to the car, clearly aware that his wife wanted to talk to his brother alone.
Killian gave Elsa a questioning look. âWhat do you have up your sleeve?â
âDo you think Emma was attracted to you?â
He shrugged slightly. âI canât say for sure, but we talked quite a bit and she seemed to like me.â
âThe fact that she enjoyed talking to you leads me to believe she does. I love Emma, but she can be a bit prickly. I think you should ask her out.â
âDid you miss the part when you said she already left?â
âIâm going to give you her address, smart guy. Then you can go to her house.â
âPerhaps you should just give me her phone number instead.â
âYou will not ask her out over the phone,â Elsa commanded. âThatâs too impersonal.â
Killian nodded. âI see your point.â Pulling out his phone, he brought up Google Maps and typed in the address Elsa read from her contacts list. âItâs only a five minute drive.â
âYes it is, which gives you less time to change your mind.â She gave him a quick hug and kiss on the cheek. âNow get going. Call us when youâre on the way home and let us know what happened.â
âYes, maâam,â he said, saluting smartly. When she rolled her eyes at him, he grew serious. âThank you, Elsa.â
âYouâre welcome. Now go turn on your charm.â
*********
Ten minutes later, Killian pulled up in front of the small, unassuming house where the GPS led him. After cutting the engine, he drummed his fingers on the steering wheel, contemplating whether or not he should go through with his plan.
His phone buzzed with an incoming text.
Liam: Remember what I told you. Donât lose your nerve.
Killian shook his head and snorted out a laugh. Sometimes it was almost scary how well his brother knew him.
âThe worst that can happen is she turns me down. I can survive that, right?â he muttered to himself. âWell, I guess weâll find out.â
He unbuckled his seatbelt, threw open his car door and climbed out. Then he walked up the short sidewalk, lined with lighted plastic candy canes. After knocking on the front door, he nervously brushed one hand through his hair, then tugged at the bottom of his black leather jacket.
The door swung open and he found himself looking down at the little drummer boy, still dressed in his cut off jeans and white shirt, sans the paper bag vest. They looked at each other for a couple of seconds, then Henry turned and yelled, âMom! Some guy is here!â
âHenry, what have I told you about answering theâŚâ Emmaâs words cut off suddenly when she came into view. âKillian?â she questioned disbelievingly.
âUh, hi. I, umâŚI hope you donât mind me stopping by,â he stammered.
She looked flabbergasted. âHow did you know where I live?â
âElsa gave me your address. I hope that was okay.â
Henry looked back and forth between the two adults. âDo you mean Mrs. Jones? Aliceâs mom?â
âAnd Missyâs,â Emma added distractedly.
âHow do you know Mrs. Jones?â Henry asked.
âKillianâs brother Liam is Elsaâs husband,â Emma explained. âHenry, please go turn the burner off under the hot cocoa so it wonât burn.â
âIf itâs ready, can I pour someâŚâ
âAbsolutely not. Do not touch the pan or anything else; just the knob for the burner.â
âBut IâŚâ
She put her arm around his shoulders. âAfter you turn off the stove, why donât you go ahead and put your pajamas on. Just give me a couple of minutes to speak to Mr. Jones, okay?â
âYou did a fine job on your drum solo tonight, lad,â Killian said.
Henryâs face brightened. âDo ya really think so?â
âAye. You were the star of the show.â
A wide grin split the boyâs face. âThanks! I practiced a lot!â
âYour mother told me you did. Practice makes perfect, they say.â
âI guess so. We can be in band next year and I want to play percussion.â
Killian snuck a glance at Emma, who closed her eyes and shook her head slightly. With difficulty, he kept from laughing, before answering, âIâm sure youâll enjoy that.â
âAt least one of us will,â Emma mumbled, before reminding Henry about turning off the stove.
âBye, Mr. Jones. Merry Christmas!â Henry shouted on his way out of the room.
âMerry Christmas to you, lad.â
âSo, um, not to sound rude, but why are you here?â Emma asked as soon as they were alone.
He tried not to fidget as he thought of what to say. âIâŚI really enjoyed talking to you this evening.â
âI enjoyed talking to you, too.â
Encouraged, the corner of his mouth quirked up. âThatâs good to hear. So, I was wondering ifâŚif you would consider going out with me.â
âOn a date?â she asked, brows shooting up.
âAye, thatâs the idea.â
âI canâtâŚâ
Killian felt his stomach drop.
â...even remember the last time I went on a date.â
âPerhaps we should remedy that,â he suggested hopefully.
Emma pulled her bottom lip between her teeth, chewing on it in contemplation. âI donât knowâŚâ
âGo out with him, Mom!â Henry yelled from the kitchen.
âReally, kid?â Emma said, clearly exasperated.
Henry poked his head around the door frame. âI like him.â
âWerenât you told to put your pajamas on?â
âI will. I just accidentally heard what Mr. Jones said.â
Emma crossed her arms and gave him a patented âmom lookâ. âAccidentally, huh?â
He shrugged. âI have good hearing.â
âOnly when you want to have it,â she stated. âNow, go do as you were told.â
âOkay,â he sighed, trudging down the hallway to his room.
She turned back to Killian, dropping her arms to her sides. âLooks like you have my kidâs approval.â
He studied her for a few seconds. âWhat about you, Emma? Do I have your approval, too? Elsa said she would be happy to watch Henry for you if we go out.â
She hesitated, then lifted her chin decisively. âYes, Killian. I would love to go out with you.â
*********
One year laterâŚ
Killian followed Emma down the aisle of the auditorium and grinned when he realized what seats she chose. After sitting down, he draped his arm around her shoulders and leaned over to murmur in her ear, âThese seats seem familiar, Love.â
She snuggled against his side. âTheyâre very special, because this is where I met the love of my life.â
âWhat a coincidence,â he teased. âThis is where I met mine, too.â
Elsa and Liam slid into the seats in front of them. âHello, lovebirds,â Elsa grinned.
âDonât encourage them,â Liam cautioned. âI already have to witness far too much PDA from those two.â
âYou donât have to watch, you know,â Killian said, lightly whacking the back of Liamâs head.
âBoth of you behave,â Elsa said, as Emma giggled.
âSpeaking of behaving,â Killian began, âdo you think your daughters will make it through the concert without assaulting each other this year?â
âI wouldnât bet on it,â Liam said. âI caught Missy trying to hit her sister over the head with her flute the other day.â
âBe happy it wasnât the other way around,â Emma commented. âAlice could do some serious damage with her saxophone.â
They were still laughing when the fifth grade band shuffled onto the stage in all their Christmas finery, instruments held proudly in front of them. Emma and Killian immediately spotted Henry taking his place behind the snare drum. He smiled and gave them a quick wave before picking up his drumsticks.
âHe looks so grown up,â Emma said quietly.
âYour little drummer boy isnât very little anymore,â Killian observed fondly. He and Henry had a very close relationship and he loved the boy as his own.
âA lot has changed in the past year,â she sighed happily.
âAye, Love. Itâs been phenomenal in every way.â
Mary Margaret, who also instructed the fifth grade band along with teaching elementary music, walked out onto the stage, preparing to introduce their first song.
Emma settled against Killianâs side to enjoy the concert. A year ago, sitting in these very seats, neither of them could ever have imagined what that first meeting would mean to them.
As the band began playing Jingle Bells, Killian pulled Emma a little closer. His chest swelled with pride watching Henry concentrating on his music, as he beat out the rhythm on the drum. This year, Emma hadnât had to endure his incessant practicing alone, since Killian moved in with them just before Thanksgiving.
Emma saw Killian glancing at his watch once the third and final song ended. âAre you anxious to leave? You know we still have to sit through the sixth grade and junior high bands, donât you?â
He rubbed the back of his neck. âIâm aware. I was just trying to gauge what time it will be over.â
âIâd say the concert will last about an hour,â Liam threw over his shoulder.
Killian slumped a bit in his chair. Then he caught sight of Henry, who was sitting in a reserved section to their right with the rest of the fifth grade band. The boy beamed at him and gave him a thumbs up. Killian winked and returned his smile.
Last year, the evening of Henryâs concert ended with Killian asking Emma out on their first date. This year, he had a different question to ask when they got home, one for which Henry had already given his approval.
He hoped her answer would be the same as last year. If so, they would be sitting in these seats next year as husband and wife.
Kissing her temple, Killian impatiently waited for the sixth grade band to begin playing. He intertwined their fingers, imagining how her hand would look with the diamond engagement ring on it. When she turned her face up to look at him, love shining in her eyes, he knew the beauty of the diamond would pale in comparison to the lady wearing it.
*********
Liamâs estimate for the length of the concert was right on the nose. When they finally walked out of the auditorium, light snow was falling. The conversation in the car on the way home was warm and playful. Henry laughed about the sixth grade percussionist who dropped one of the cymbals in the middle of a song, and expressed his hope that when he got older, he would be the one to make the whip sound for Sleigh Ride.
âLord, help us through seven more years of band,â Emma murmured under her breath, causing Killian to laugh, despite the nerves that were knotting his stomach.
As soon as they got home, Henry went into the kitchen to get the ingredients out for hot cocoa, dubbing it a tradition after the Christmas concert.
âIs it a tradition if this is only the second time we did it?â Emma asked.
âI donât know,â Killian answered, âbut I do know of another tradition thatâs been around much longer.â He pointed at the top of the doorway between the living room and kitchen.
âWhen did you put mistletoe up there?â she asked, wrapping her arms around his neck.
âThis evening while you were getting dressed for the concert.â
âYouâre very sneaky,â she said, leaning in until her lips were just a fraction of an inch away from his.
âAnd you love me for it,â he grinned.
âMmhmm,â she hummed before kissing him.
âPre-teen boy coming through,â Henry announced, squeezing past them. âIâm going to put my pajamas on. Please be done making out by the time I get back.â
Emma and Killian laughed into their kiss. âI think weâre scarring him for life,â he quipped.
âThatâs what parents are for,â she replied.
Killian pulled back to look at her. âYou consider me to be his parent?â
âYouâre more of a father to him than Neal has ever been.â
He surged forward to kiss her again. When it finally ended, he asked, âDo you think Henry regards me that way, too?â
âIâm sure he does.â
âDoes what?â Henry asked, re-entering the room, now dressed in plaid Christmas pajamas.
âDo you think of Killian as one of your parents?â Emma asked.
âWell, duh,â he stated matter-of-factly. âCan we make hot chocolate now?â
Emma tried to give Killian a look that said I told you so, but he was gazing at Henry with a sense of wonder over the boyâs declaration.
Once the cocoa was gone and Henry was off to bed, Killian and Emma lay together on the sofa. The living room was lit only by the gas fireplace and the lights from the Christmas tree, while Christmas music played softly.
âThis is nice,â she sighed.
He hummed in agreement, stroking his hand up and down her back. His thoughts were preoccupied with the perfect way to propose, so he almost missed what she said next.
âMarry me, Killian.â
His hand on her back stilled as his mind registered what she just said. âWh-what?â
She pushed up on her elbows to look into his face. âMarry me.â
âSwan, youâre depriving me of a dashing proposal!â he protested.
She cocked her head, studying him. âAre you serious?â
He slid out from under her to kneel on the floor in front of the couch, reaching into the pocket of his sleep pants to retrieve the ring and holding it up for her to see.
Her eyes widened as she swung her feet down to the floor. âOh. My. God. You really were going to propose, werenât you?â
âAye.â
âAre you mad at me?â
âMad? Why would I be mad? Since you asked me first, Iâm pretty sure I know what your answer is going to be,â he chuckled.
âYou still have to ask. Thatâs the rule.â
âWhose rule?â
âMine. Now, letâs hear that dashing proposal.â
He grinned, then cleared his throat. âEmma, you and Henry have changed my life in every way possible. I never knew happiness like this even existed, let alone that it would happen to me. There arenât enough words in this world to express how much I love you, but right now, thereâs only one word I need to hear in response to this question - Emma Swan, will you marry me?â
Tears filled her eyes when she opened her mouth to answer, but emotion clogged her throat, so she nodded emphatically and threw her arms around him. As he held her tight, kissing her and murmuring words of love, she finally found her voice. âYes, Killian, I will marry you! I love you so much!â
She pulled away, wiping at her eyes. âHenry and I are very lucky to have you in our lives. I know Iâm speaking for him too when I say we want you to be part of our family forever.â Framing his face with her hands, she leaned in to kiss him again.
âDo you want the ring?â he asked against her lips.
She giggled and sat back, extending her left hand to him. He slid the ring into place and kissed her knuckle above it.
âItâs perfect,â she breathed.
âYou are perfect, my love.â
âSays the man who complains when I leave wet towels on the floor,â she teased.
âWellâŚnearly perfect,â he grinned.
She held her hand up to admire the ring, the lights of the Christmas tree making the diamond glitter. âWeâre engaged,â she said, awestruck.
âMmhmm. Who would have thought that a little drummer boy and two feuding reindeer would bring us together and give us a happy ending?â
Her eyes met his, laughter and love dancing in them. âBest night of my life, hands down. Until today,â she amended.
Kissing the tip of her nose, he whispered, âHappy Christmas, wife-to-be.â
âMerry Christmas, husband-to-be.â
He stood up and took her hand to help her to her feet. Then they went to their bedroom to share the best gift of all - the love they had for each other.

âDonât worry about me, Mary Margaret,â Emma Swan said into the phone, as she entered her bedroom to grab her purse. âI just ordered Grubhub. It should be here any minute.â
âI wish you had come over to eat with us tonight,â her friend responded a bit forlornly.
âI appreciate the offer, but Iâm looking forward to an evening all to myself,â Emma said. She was a little surprised to realize she was being completely honest. âIâm already in my comfy clothes and I plan on watching the new season of The Great British Baking Show with some hot cocoa and popcorn, later.â
âI hate to think of you being alone on New Yearâs Eve.â
âI would rather be alone than with any of the guys I had as dates for the last three New Yearâs Eves. Those dates were unmitigated disasters, as you well know.â
âJefferson wasnât so bad,â Mary Margaret commented.
âAre you kidding? He was crazy as a loon! He showed up wearing a top hat, for crying out loud.â
Mary Margaret sighed. âWell, donât give up on dating, Emma. One of these days, the right guy will come along.â
âThatâs what you keep saying. At least one of us has hope.â Just then, the doorbell rang. âI have to go; my food is here. I hope you and David have a great time tonight. Iâll talk to you tomorrow.â
âOkay. Enjoy your evening, Emma. Happy New Year!â
After ending the call, Emma hurried out to the living room and opened the front door. Standing on her porch was the Grubhub delivery man.
Emma had food delivered on a semi-regular basis and met many delivery people, but most she didnât really remember after she closed the door. However, this particular delivery person she had never seen before, because if she had, she was quite certain she would have remembered him.
The man standing in front of her was attractively dressed in dark jeans, a button down shirt and black leather jacket. He was about six feet tall and obviously in very good shape. After taking all of this in, her eyes moved to his face. Thatâs when her breath caught in her throat, because he was, quite literally, breathtaking.
The bluest eyes she had ever seen sparkled beneath long lashes and expressive brows. Attractive sideburns faded into neatly-trimmed scruff on his strong jawline and chin, and his dark hair curled around his adorable, slightly pointed ears. His other perfectly proportioned facial features completed his handsome face.
Emma realized he was smirking and wondered how long she had been staring at him. Giving herself a mental shake, she cleared her throat. âUh, hi, I, umâŚI guess you have some food for me?â
âAye, lass. I have your order right here,â he said, holding up a large plastic bag.
An accent. He had a fucking British accent.
Once again, she had to remind herself to speak. âThank you. I, uhâŚoh, hang on a second. Let me get you a tip.â
She took the bag from him and set it on the floor beside her. Digging inside her purse, she pulled out her wallet. âI should give you extra for coming out on New Yearâs Eve.â
âThatâs not necessary, madam.â
Riffling through her wallet, she pulled out a five dollar bill and two singles. âThen Iâll pay you extra to never call me that name again.â
He laughed as he took the offered bills. âThanks very much. I hope you have a lovely evening, E.S.,â he said, referring to her initials from the order information.
âYou, too,â she answered, picking up the food.
He gave her a grin, then turned and went down the porch steps. Instead of closing the door right away, she watched him walking down the sidewalk to his car. Just as she began to swing the door shut, she heard him let out a yelp and looked out to see his feet fly out from under him. His arms flailed as he attempted to keep his balance, but it didnât help. He fell hard on his back, his head thankfully missing the concrete and landing in her snow-covered yard.
âOh my gosh!â Emma exclaimed, dropping the bag of food, flying out the door, and rushing quickly but carefully to where he lay moaning. âAre you alright?â
He sat up slowly, brushing the snow out of his hair with one hand, while the other rubbed the small of his back. âI think so?â he answered unconvincingly.
âIâm so sorry! I shoveled the snow so the sidewalk would be clear for you, but didnât notice the ice underneath.â
âItâs okay, lass,â he said, though the grimace on his face told a different story.
âHere, let me help you up.â She offered him her hand and began tugging. He had just gotten his feet under him, when she slipped and fell on top of him.
âBloody hell,â he groaned.
âI am very, very sorry,â Emma apologized, then dropped her head to his sternum and burst into laughter. She was relieved to hear his answering chuckle.
When she got herself under control, she managed to get to her feet and looked down at him. He lay there smiling up at her. âI better give you a bigger tip to help cover your medical bills,â she quipped.
He rolled over and got to his knees, then cautiously pushed himself to his feet. Standing in the snow beside the slick sidewalk, he tilted his head from side to side, both hands on his back. âThat wonât be necessary, Love. I appear to be in one piece.â
âAt least let me get you an ice pack to put on your back while you drive to your next delivery.â
âYou donât need to go to that trouble, either. You are my last stop of the night.â
âI hope youâre not too sore for your New Yearâs plans tonight .â
He scratched behind his ear. âThatâs not a problem. I donât have any.â
âYouâre kidding!â Emma blurted out before thinking.
He gave her a quizzical look. âWhy does that surprise you?â
âI justâŚyouâŚhonestly, you donât look like someone who would have trouble finding a date.â
âNeither do you, lass.â
She wrapped her arms around herself, suddenly realizing she wasnât wearing a coat. âLook, I feel really bad for causing you to fall. Wonât you please come in so I can get you an ice pack and ibuprofen?â
He hesitated, his hands moving to his lower back again. âPerhaps that would be a good idea, if you truly donât mind.â
âI wouldnât make the offer if I did. Come on in.â She turned and led the way through the snow to her house, picking up the bag of food once she was inside the door.
The delivery man entered behind her, closed the door, stomped his boots off on the mat, and stood there a bit awkwardly.
Emma set the bag on the coffee table and turned to look at him. âI havenât even told you my name yet. Iâm Emma Swan.â
âKillian Jones,â he said, reaching out to shake her hand.
âIâll be right back,â Emma said. She went into the kitchen, took an ice pack out of the freezer, and wrapped it in a tea towel. Then she got a bottle of water out of the fridge and grabbed the ibuprofen off of the counter. Thatâs when she had second thoughts about her decision to ask him in. Sure, he was incredibly handsome and seemed very nice, but criminals could be handsome and deceptively nice, too.
Peeking around the corner of the door frame, she saw that he was still standing on the small rug in the entryway, shifting from foot to foot. Surely, if he were inclined to commit some sort of crime, he would have taken advantage of her being out of sight.
She walked back into the living room. âYou can take off your coat and sit down, if you like.â
âI donât want to drip water across your floor.â
Emma pointed to the shoes on her feet. âIf I didnât worry about it, you shouldnât either. But if it makes you feel better, you can take off your boots and leave them on the rug.â
He toed them off, then unzipped his coat and removed it.
She set the water bottle and ibuprofen on the table beside the sack of food and sat down on the couch, gesturing for him to sit on the other end. Once he did, he shook out a couple of pills from the bottle and took a swig of water. Then she handed him the ice, which he placed on his lower back.
After sitting in silence for several moments, she leaned forward and pulled the food towards herself. âI ordered enough food for several people because I was feeling self-indulgent. Are you hungry?â
âI couldnât possibly ask you toâŚâ
âYou didnât ask me, I offered. Iâll go get a couple of plates.â
As they ate, they made small talk about mundane subjects.
âIs the ice helping your back?â she asked.
âAye, a bit. I think I just twisted it when I fell.â
âIâm very glad you didnât hit your head on the concrete.â
âMe, too.â
âIf the ice pack isnât cold anymore, Iâll get you another one. I have plenty. I have to keep a lot on hand because of my job.â
âAre you a professional kickboxer or something?â
She laughed. âNo, but close. Iâm a bail bondsperson who doubles as a bounty hunter, when necessary.â
He whistled lowly. âYou must be a tough lass. How did you get into that particular profession?â
âItâs a long story.â
âMy schedule is pretty clear, but if you arenât comfortable talking about it with a total strangerâŚâ
âYou stopped being a total stranger when you told me your name,â she pointed out.
He grinned and she felt her insides melting at how it made his already handsome face even more gorgeous.
âIâll tell you on one condition - that you promise not to pity me.â
âAh, so itâs a story of tragedy.â
She shrugged. âI guess you could say that.â
âIn that case, I promise not to pity you. However, if you want, I can reciprocate by sharing my own tragic story.â
âWhat better way to spend New Yearâs Eve than depressing the person we just met?â
âIndeed,â he said, grinning again.
Emma took a deep breath and began telling her story. âI grew up without a family. I donât know why my parents gave me up at birth, but they did. I was placed in foster care as an infant and stayed with one family for three years. Just as they were initiating adoption proceedings, they found out they were having a baby of âtheir ownâ.â She framed the last two words with air quotes. âSo they decided they didnât need to adopt me. I was put back into the system and by the time I was seven, I was labeled emotionally troubled.â
âItâs no wonder, after being taken from the only home you ever knew,â Killian commented.
âI know, right? Anyway, I was moved to different foster homes pretty frequently and was never considered for adoption again. I ran away from my last placement when I was sixteen and got caught shoplifting a couple of months later. They sent me to a juvenile detention center that specialized in vocational training. When I took one of those assessments thatâs supposed to match your interests to a career, it said I was most suited for a job in law enforcement, which I thought was absolutely ridiculous.â
She paused to take a drink of her soda. âThen this really tough counselor named Cleo took an interest in me and told me I was wasting my potential by being angry at the world. She trained me to be a bail bondsperson and bounty hunter because I flat out refused to go to the police academy.â
âDo you like the job?â he asked.
âIt pays the bills. Most of the time, itâs pretty boring, but once in a while I have to do a stakeout or set a honey trap.â
âHoney trap?â
âSet up a fake date with a skip and dress sexy. Once I gain their trust, or their lust, I cuff them and take them in.â
âAh, I see.â
She dug her fork into the container of pork lo mein and put it in her mouth. After chewing and swallowing, she continued. âSometimes I wish I went to the academy, instead of being so damn stubborn.â
âItâs not too late,â Killian observed. âPerhaps you could look into it.â
âYeah, maybe. Iâve been thinking about it more often lately.â After taking another swig of pop, she asked, âSo whatâs your tragic backstory?â
âI moved to America with my mother and brother nine years ago, when I was seventeen. Mum was battling cancer and we found a treatment center that seemed more promising than any place in England.â
âDid the treatment work?â
âIn a manner of speaking. It gave us more time with her than we would have had, if we hadnât moved. Her prognosis was less than two years in England. She outlived that by nearly seven years. We had to be sponsored by her cousin in New Hampshire, since her medical visa expired.â
âDid she pass away recently?â
âAye. Five months ago.â
Emma reached over to place her hand on top of his. âIâm sorry, Killian.â
He sighed, then tried to force a smile onto his face. âThank you. My brother, Liam, stayed here for a couple of months after her passing, but then he moved back to England. I remained behind because there are still some things I need to do to settle Mumâs affairs.â
âWill you go back home after you do that?â
âI havenât decided yet. Iâm not sure I think of England as home anymore. Liam is there, but he has a girlfriend, Elsa, whom he met online three years ago. Theyâve visited back and forth with each other several times. Theyâre very serious and are discussing moving in together, so even if I move back, Iâll have to find a flat and a job. I already have a place to live here. Weâve been renting a house in the suburbs since we came over. The landlord is a very kind man who is like family now.â
âDo you have a job? Besides driving for Grubhub, I mean?â
âI work down at the docks, helping to maintain the piers.â
âDo you like it?â
âAye. Iâve always loved being around the water.â
They both continued eating, before Emma asked another question. âYou, umâŚyou didnât mention a father.â
âHeâs not worth mentioning. I was six when he left, so I donât remember much about him or what happened. Liam was ten and he is pretty sure Da left Mum for someone else. He never sent us any money or attempted to see us.â
âOh, wow. So your mom had to raise you by herself?â
âAye, she did, but she never complained or spoke even one harsh word against our father. She said she couldnât be angry or bitter toward him because he gave her the two greatest treasures of her life.â
âShe sounds like a wonderful person.â
âThat she was. She deserved so much better.â
They were quiet for a few minutes, thinking about everything they just shared with each other as they finished eating.
Finally, Killian broke the silence. âSo tell me, lass. How does it happen that you are home by yourself on New Yearâs Eve?â
âIâve had horrible dates the last three years and I didnât want to increase the streak to four.â
âDo you mind me asking what made them so horrible?â
She laughed humorlessly. âThree years ago, I was with a guy I had been dating for several months. I thought things were going well all that time. Just before midnight, he proceeded to break up with me, saying he wasnât happy and felt trapped in our relationship. So while everyone was kissing once the new year arrived, I was by myself, crying in a corner of the room.â
âWhat a complete arse,â Killian commented, an angry edge to his voice.
âYeah, he really was. I didnât date again for nearly a year, until my friend Mary Margaret set me up with the owner of a furniture store where she bought a bedroom set. New Yearâs Eve was our third date. He was polite, easy to talk to, and wasnât aggressive. He never even tried to hold my hand or give me a kiss on our dates.â
âSounds like a perfect gentleman who was letting you set the pace.â
âThatâs what I thought, too.â
âWhat happened?â
âAbout halfway through the night, he disappeared. We were all at our friend Reginaâs house, and when I started asking people if they had seen him, everyone said they hadnât. It was a pretty big party with close to forty people, so it took me a while to finally realize he wasnât anywhere to be found downstairs. Thatâs when I decided to check the bedrooms upstairs.â
âOh, no. Donât tell me you found him with another woman.â
âWell, I did find himâŚbut not with another woman.â
âWho was heâŚâ Killian began, then realization set in. âYouâve got to be kidding me.â
âNope, not kidding. That explained why he wasnât in any hurry to show me any kind of affection.â
âWow,â he commented simply. âI wonder why he agreed to go out with a woman in the first place, if that was his inclination.â
âI donât know. I didnât stick around to find out. I still havenât let Mary Margaret hear the end of it, and if she even hints that she wants to set me up with someoneâŚâ
âIâm sure you shut that down very quickly.â
âYep. Which brings us to last year.â
âI canât imagine it being much worse than the previous two.â
âIt wasnât, but it was still bad. This time, my friend Ruby set me up with a guy she knew. I should have known better, because Ruby is a bit off-the-wall. I mean, I love her, but she is very quirky. Anyway, this guy shows up wearing an orange top hat.â
Killian started laughing. âDid he have the matching tuxedo? Perhaps he was a big fan of Dumb and Dumber.â
Emma joined in the laughter. âNo orange tux, but he definitely would have fit right into that movie. We were at Reginaâs again and he found out she had a sewing machine and a basket full of material. He spent a couple of hours sewing the scraps together to make this sort of shawl thing. Then he brought it out to the party and performed some sort of dance with it, waving it around like he was a bullfighter. It was the most bizarre thing Iâve ever witnessed.â
âI take it you wonât let Ruby try to set you up, either?â
âYou got that right.â
âI can certainly understand your reluctance to have another New Yearâs date.â
âWhich is why Iâm home by myself, indulging in copious amounts of Chinese food and binge watching The Great British Baking Show.â
âIs the new season out?â he asked with a note of excitement.
âYeah, itâs been out for a couple of months but I donât like to watch it one episode at a time. I hate having to wait a whole week.â
âI can understand that.â
âYou like that show, too, I take it?â
âAye. It was one of Mumâs favorites and we always watched it together. I wonât get to see it this year, though. Iâve been canceling some subscriptions, and Netflix was one of them.â
Emma opened her mouth to tell him he could stay and watch it with her, but before the words came out, she had second thoughts. She didnât want to give him the idea that she was coming on to him.
As she watched him putting another spoonful of fried rice on his plate, she began debating with herself. The poor guy hurt his back because of her negligence, but he didnât have any hard feelings. Having him for company was better than spending the entire evening alone, and she was truly enjoying their conversation. Plus, she told him she would be watching one of his favorite shows, so not inviting him to stay and watch it with her would be rude. Wouldnât it?
âSwan?â His voice interrupted her thoughts.
âHmm?â
âPenny for your thoughts?â
âOh, uhâŚI was thinking that you could, umâŚthat is, if you want to, you could watch the show with me.â
âI wasnât fishing for an invitationâŚâ
âI know, and please donât feel pressured to accept. I just wanted you to know that youâre welcome to stay.â
âThatâs very kind of you, Emma, but I donât want to infringe on your evening.â
âI was looking forward to having a relaxing evening at home instead of dressing up and going out, but Iâm okay with you being here. As long as you donât mind seeing me in my oldest, comfiest sweats.â
âYou still look quite fetching,â he grinned. âIn all honesty, I was dreading spending the evening by myself, especially since itâs my first New Yearâs Eve without Mum. Perhaps slipping on the ice was a fortunate turn of events.â
âYour back may not agree,â she quipped. Plucking the remote from the coffee table, she powered on the television and brought up Netflix. âMake yourself comfortable. My plan was to watch the first three episodes, then make popcorn and hot chocolate. Sound good?â
âSounds perfect,â he said, following her lead and propping his feet on the coffee table.
âOh, wait. Before we start, Iâll get you a fresh ice pack,â she said, hopping up and holding out her hand for the melted one.
When she came back, he took the new one from her, commenting, âYouâre a very good caregiver, Swan.â
âThanks, Jones,â she replied with a smirk.
âApologies. Iâm used to referring to my coworkers by their last names.â
âThereâs no need to apologize. I have no issue with being called by my last name.â
âIt fits you.â
âThanks. I picked it myself.â
He scrutinized her with a raised brow. âTruly?â
âYeah. After I ran away, I didnât want to be tracked down by my last name, so I started calling myself Emma Swan. I had it changed officially once I was older and had enough money to pay for it.â
âHow did you come up with Swan?â
âFrom the Ugly Duckling. I always liked that story and could relate to that poor little duck nobody wanted.â
âBut it transforms into a lovely swan, just like you did.â
âI donât know about that, but Iâm happy I didnât have to keep the name CPS came up with for me. It never felt right to me.â While she was talking, she was flipping through the options on Netflix to find The Great British Baking Show. Clicking on it, she said, âI havenât missed a single season of this show. The contestants always astound me with the stuff they bake.â
âAye, me as well. Are you a baker yourself, Swan?â
âPfft, far from it. I tried to make a cake once and failed miserably. And it was from a box! Apparently itâs important to read the directions. Who knew?â
Killian laughed. âPerhaps youâll try again someday.â
âMaybe. In the meantime, Iâm going to watch twelve people do amazing things and then get kicked off one by one because what they spent hours baking wasnât perfect.â
âDo you ever choose a favorite contestant?â
âEvery time.â
âIs it ever the eventual champion?â
âNever.â
He laughed again. âSame with me. Mum, on the other hand, had a knack for selecting the person who either won it or at least got into the top three.â
âShe must have known a lot about baking.â
âNot really. I think she was just lucky.â
Emma clicked on the episode and they settled in to watch, laughing at the co-hosts and making bets on who would be Star Baker and who would be the first to leave the tent. When Killian was right on both counts, he thrust his arms up in the air, exclaiming, âYes!â
âYou must have inherited your motherâs knack,â Emma observed.
âPerhaps she was whispering in my ear,â he said, a slightly sad smile on his face.
She reached over to pat him on the knee. âShe probably was.â
Before they started the next episode, Killian asked, âWould you please direct me to your bathroom?â
âSure.â She turned in her seat and pointed behind them. âDown the hall, first door on the left.â
âThank you,â he said, standing and stretching.
As he twisted at the waist, Emma asked, âHow does your back feel?â
âNot bad. I think the ice packs and ibuprofen helped.â
âGood.â
She watched him leave the room, then took the ice pack to return it to the freezer. After that, she cleared off the coffee table, putting the leftover food in the refrigerator and the dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
When she returned, Killian was once again sitting on the sofa, looking at his phone. He didnât seem to notice that she re-entered the room, so she took a few moments to study him. Now that she had a chance to get to know him a little, she found him even more attractive, because she now knew there was more to him than just a pretty face.
Finally resuming her seat, she picked up the remote again. âReady for the next episode?â
âUh, give me a second. I just got a message from Liam. Itâs already past midnight there and heâs wishing me a Happy New Year.â
âYou can call him if you like. I donât mind waiting.â
He turned his startling blue eyes on her. âThanks, I think I will.â
Standing from the couch, she said, âIâll give you some privacy.â
âOh, thereâs no need. I donât mind if you overhear our conversation. Actually, I think Iâll Facetime him instead. Itâs been a few weeks since Iâve seen his ugly mug.â
She giggled. âSpoken like a true brother.â
Grinning, he put the call through. While he was greeting his brother, Emma busied herself with checking her own phone, responding to messages from Mary Margaret and Ruby, received while she was watching the show.
âSay hi to my brother, Swan.â
Glancing up, she was surprised to see him holding his phone up to her. A man with similar facial features as Killian, but with lighter, curly hair was on the screen, smiling at her. âHello, lass.â
âOh, uhâŚhi. Happy New Year,â she responded.
âThe same to you. Iâm sorry you have to spend it with my git of a brother.â
âHey!â Killian protested.
Emma laughed. âInviting him to watch The Great British Baking Show with me was the least I could do after he fell on the ice on my sidewalk. He was delivering my dinner.â
âHe said he fell and you took pity on him. I figured it was because of his own clumsiness.â
A female voice came through the phone. âLiam, stop teasing Killian. He was sweet enough to call and youâre being mean.â
The face of the woman speaking came into view on the screen. Emma saw she was beautiful, with almost white-blonde hair and large, expressive eyes. âHello. You must be Elsa.â
âYes, thatâs me. Forgive me, but I didnât catch your name.â
âIâm Emma Swan. Itâs very nice meeting you, and you too, Liam.â
âThe pleasure is ours, lass,â Liam said. âAll kidding aside, weâre very happy Killian isnât alone this evening. I was afraid he was sitting around the house moping.â
âHeâs been very good company,â she assured him.
Killian scooted closer to her so they could both be on the screen. âWe should let you get back to your party,â he said.
âYes, Iâm sure Anna will come looking for us soon,â Elsa said.
âThank you for calling, little brother,â Liam added. âWe miss you.â
âI miss you, too, but I do not miss being called little brother. Iâm younger.â
âAnd two inches shorter, so technically youâre little, also.â
Before Killian could reply, Elsa cut in, âThatâs enough, boys. Emma will think all the two of you ever do is argue.â
Emma laughed as Killian said, âHappy New Year, you two. Iâll talk to you again soon. Love you.â
âWe love you, too. I hope this new year will be a better one for both of us,â Liam responded.
Killian glanced at Emma. âI think itâs getting off to a pretty good start.â
She listened to them finish their goodbyes, a little surprised that his statement didnât make her uncomfortable. In fact, she felt the exact same way.
*********
They were halfway through the sixth episode when Killian checked the time on his phone. âItâs eleven fifty seven,â he announced.
âOh!â Emma said, pushing her empty mug and popcorn bowl out of the way to find the remote. âWould you like to watch the ball drop?â
âSure.â
She quickly exited Netflix and searched for a channel covering the party in Times Square. As they watched the raucous scene, she commented, âI would hate to be in that crowd.â
âAye, me too. I much prefer being in a quiet place.â
The ball began to drop. When it reached ten seconds to go, the two of them counted along with the mob of people on screen. It hit zero, lighting up the year â2024â, then it switched to another camera showing people in the crowd sharing kisses.
Emma glanced at Killian out of the corner of her eye. At the same time, he took his eyes off the television and looked at her. âHappy New Year, Emma,â he said quietly.
âHappy New Year, Killian.â Her eyes flicked down to his lips, lingering for a second before traveling back up again. Then, without conscious thought, she leaned toward him.
The touch of his lips against hers sent a shiver of delight through her. The kiss was brief and left her wanting more, but she pulled back before she could act on that impulse.
Neither of them spoke for several moments. Finally, Killian broke the silence. âUmâŚperhaps we should finish the episode, then I need to be going.â
âOh, right,â she said, bringing Netflix back up. They watched the remainder of the show without talking, both preoccupied with thoughts of the kiss they just shared.
As soon as the episode ended, Killian stood up. Emma flicked off the television and stood, too, shifting back and forth on her stockinged feet.
He cleared his throat, scratching behind his ear. âI, umâŚI thoroughly enjoyed this evening - except for falling on my arse, that is.â
She chuckled. âI apologize again, but I have to say Iâm not sorry it led to you keeping me company tonight. It was nice having someone to watch the show with and discuss it.â
âThank you for inviting me to join you. It brought back good memories of watching it with my mother. I needed that tonight.â
They stood looking at each other for several more moments, then he moved to put on his boots and coat. She walked to the door, ready to open it for him. âBe careful going home. There will probably be some people driving who shouldnât be on the road.â
He zipped his coat and tugged a blue knit cap out of the pocket, pulling it on over his dark hair. Emma found the addition utterly adorable.
âWell, I guess Iâll be on my way,â he said, stepping toward the door.
âKillianâŚâ she began, then paused. He looked at her expectantly. âI, um, I hate to think that you wonât get to see the rest of the new season. Would you like to come over sometime to watch the rest of the episodes?â
A smile slowly spread across his face. âI would like that very much.â
*********
âAre you sure you donât want to go out with Mary Margaret and David this evening, Love?â Killian called from the living room.
âIâm sure,â Emma said, coming through the doorway dressed in her oldest sweats, the same ones she wore exactly one year ago. Sitting down beside him on the sofa, she added, âIâm content staying home, doing the same thing I did last year.â
âYou mean practically maiming the Grubhub delivery man on your icy sidewalk?â
âWhy not? It worked out pretty well for me last year,â she teased, snuggling into his side.
âItâs unfortunate for you I salted the sidewalk, then,â he responded.
âThatâs okay. One former delivery driver is more than enough for me.â
âMore than enough, huh?â he smirked. âAre you saying I give you more than you can handle, Swan?â
Elbowing him lightly in the side, she said, âKeep it up and when your big brother calls, Iâm going to tell him youâre being insufferable.â
âOlder brother,â he automatically corrected. âAnd donât you dare. Iâll never hear the end of it.â
âThen behave,â she said, reaching for her phone on the coffee table. âIâm gonna put in our order. Same as last year?
âWorks for me, but this time, I call dibs on the pork lo mein.â
She furrowed her brow at him. âNobody messes with my pork lo mein and lives to tell about it.â
âHave they been teaching you intimidation techniques at the police academy?â he asked, trying to contain his mirth.
She glared at him a few seconds longer, then turned her attention back to her phone, saying, âIâll put in a double order for it.â
âGrand idea, Love. Iâm going to change into my own comfy clothes.â
She watched him leave the room, headed toward their bedroom, then finished placing their food order. While she was waiting for him to come back, she reflected on the past year. It was, by far, the best year of her life. She met Killian, fell in love and eventually asked him to move in with her. For their eight month anniversary, he took her on a trip to England to meet his brother and future sister-in-law. He also encouraged her to pursue her dream of enrolling in the police academy, where she was set to graduate in a little over a month.
âPenny for your thoughts?â
Emma blinked and looked up at her love, amazed as always that he was hers.
Grabbing his hand in both of hers, she pulled him down beside her and climbed into his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. âI was just thinking about everything that happened since last New Yearâs Eve.â
He tightened his grip on her, running his nose along the slope of her throat. âA lot has happened, all of it good,â he murmured.
âWell, most of it. There was the day I got a flat tire and the time you came down with the flu.â
His low chuckle sounded in her ear, sending a pleasant shiver down her spine. âI was able to show you how to change the tire, and you nursed me back to health, so it all turned out good in the end.â
Placing her hands on both sides of his face, she put enough distance between them to be able to look into his brilliant blue eyes. âYou made it the best year ever. I love you, Killian.â
âI believe we made it the best year ever, Sweetheart,â he corrected. âI love you, Emma.â
They shared a long, languid kiss that turned into many more, until they were interrupted by the food delivery. As they ate, they began watching the brand new season of The Great British Baking Show, pausing it to call Elsa and Liam at seven oâclock, which was midnight in the UK. Five hours later, they paused it again to ring in the New Year themselves. This time, their kiss wasnât tentative like the year before, and they continued the celebration in their bedroom.
As they lay together, sated and blissfully happy, Emma whispered, âI wonder what 2025 has in store for us? It surely canât be better than 2024.â
âI guess weâll see,â Killian answered, thinking about the contents of a small, black velvet box, hidden in a pair of seldom worn boots, tucked away in the back corner of the closet.

Summary: All I know is this could either break my heart or bring it back to life⌠| Emma and Killian have both been burned in love before; maybe this is the time they'll get it right. [Inspired by "Electric Touch (Taylor's Version) (From the Vault)" by Taylor Swift & Fall Out Boy]
A/N: for my annual self-indulgent birthday fic: Just a little thing based on my favorite vault track from Speak Now (Taylor's Version)âŚdefinitely the first in a series of similarly-inspired fics ;)

Emma gripped the steering wheel a bit tighter and took a deep breath. She was almost home. She just had to get thereâthen whatever impending breakdown was creeping up her spine could happen.
Although she wasnât sure this was a bad one. A mental break-up? No, definitely not thatâshe didnât want to use anything even vaguely related to that term; sheâd had enough splits and kissed enough frogs that it was what she usually expected to happen. And this timeâshe really, really hoped this was the one that didnât end badly; that maybe this time, sheâd found the prince.
That was an awful lot to put on just one date, butâit was a pretty incredible one. (Or maybe her sister-in-lawâs unending optimism was finally rubbing off on her.)
Emma had almost bailed on it to start with, regretting that sheâd finally conceded to one of Mary Margaretâs setups. But her sister-in-law had been particularly insistent on this one. And the guy had agreed to meet at one of her favorite restaurants in Boston, so at least the food would be good. She was already preparing the âitâs not you, itâs meâ excuse to get out of ever seeing him again.
Based on the picture sheâd seen of him, she figured heâd just be another handsome asshole. He was definitely the first partâpossibly too much, if that was possible, in a way that made her want to put up extra defenses to protect her from a pretty face and a leather jacket (those kinds of guys were usually good for one thing and one thing only, and if he was Davidâs friend, then he was off limits for that).Â
But when she saw him across the restaurant, he looked nervousâor withdrawnâshe couldnât quite tellâanxiously tracing a tumbler of some amber-colored liquor as she approached. âKillian?â she asked, barely above a whisperâshe didnât want to scare him, getting the sudden impression he was like a timid but wild animal that might run away if startled.
He did jump a bit, but then when he realized what was going on, she saw a shift in his expressionâalmost like putting on a mask (though an attractive, charming one, with a brilliant grin that cut a dimple into his well-manicured scruff; it just wasnât fully genuine).Â
âEmma, I take it?â he replied, standing, in an accent that took her by surprise.
âThatâs me,â she confirmed, trying to keep it casual (and having no clue if she achieved that). âNice to meet you,â she said, extending her hand to his (the only one he had, she noticed, the cuff of his left sleeve hanging empty).
And that was when it all changed.
An electric shock traveled through her veins at his firm graspâcoursing fast and warm through her whole body, settling somewhere around her heart.
His eyes widened at her touch; had he felt it, too? It was probably just staticâor nothingâbut this was something different; maybe it was his aura, or something in his eyesâsome metaphysical sign from the universe that only Mary Margaret would believe inâbut something was telling herâhe was different. In the best way possible.
âPleasureâs all mine,â he said, voice deep and a bit breathy.
Woahâshe was getting ahead of herself. He just had really pretty eyes or something and that was throwing her off. Right?
But then he kissed the back of her hand and, noâthis was definitely something different. (The scratch of his stubble brushed her skin and it took everything in her not to find out right then and there what it felt like against her lips.)
The night flew by in a blurâthey more than hit it off after that. There was all the normal getting-to-know-you conversation, but even there, it seemed like they had a connection that went deeper than surface level.
Leaving to drive back to her tiny house in the outer suburbs was extremely difficult (not the hardest thing sheâd ever doneâno, that remained giving up her baby for adoptionâbut this was up there). Despite his assurance that heâd be in touch, she wasnât sure she could wait that long.
But sheâd have to, because, as she was pulling in her driveway, she realized she hadnât gotten his number.Â
She may have slammed her head against the steering wheel at that.
She took another breath and then headed inside. It was good, actuallyâbecause then she had some time to brace herself for the worst.
A fire of some kind had been litâshe knew that much; she just hoped that this would be the one time she didnât get burned.
Killian managed to keep his cool until he was out of the restaurant and partway down the block, walking to his apartment, when he finally managed to exhale. That had been completely unexpected.Â
It had been several years since anyone had truly captured his attentionânot since he first met Milah, and certainly not since she died. Heâd tried dating a few times, but nothing ever feltâŚright.Â
(Heâd pretty much given up on love entirely since the accident that took his hand and his Naval post. Mainly because he had to work on himself in that regard first.)
It had been a couple hours, but he sworeâhis hand was still buzzing from where Emma had first touched him. He flexed his fingers and felt a tingle spread through himânot as strong as earlier but it was still somehow running electricity through his nerves.Â
He was still somewhat berating himself for the choice to kiss her handâthat it had maybe come off as trying too hardâbut he hadnât been able to resist. He also had the sense that Emma would have made it known if the gesture hadnât been appreciated, and heâd be limping home to nurse his wounds rather than the almost-floating he was currently engaged in.
Emma was certainly beautifulâhe knew that much from the pictures heâd seen from Dave, his old Navy buddyâbut that wasnât it; at least, not all of it. She was also smart, fierce, caring, independent, and justâso lovely. (Perhaps a bit prickly, but in a good wayâa way he understood.)
But most of all: she got it. Him. Being surrounded by others, yet still being alone. It hadnât been a major topic of conversationâit was still only a first date, after allâbut she had that look: the one you get when you've been on your own.Â
All of a sudden, he realized he was in front of his building. And all of a sudden, that empty flat loomed above him like a tomb. Sleeping alone was something he was accustomed to, but for the first time in so long, it was the last thing he wanted to do.
ButâŚhis vintage Chevelle was right there, parked on the street.Â
He pulled out his phone from his pocket, only to realizeâthey hadnât exchanged digits. Blast.Â
But they had discussed domicilesâand he knew exactly where her house was, near the little diner heâd discovered while searching for the closest fish and chips Boston had compared to what heâd had growing up in England. (It hadnât been, but they made a damn fine burger and heâd been back a few times.)
So he fished out his keys and hopped in the car. He didnât have a ton of confidence in his romantic skills anymore, but he also knew that he only had to get it right one time. It hadnât happened in the past; maybe this would be it. Heâd known enough heartbreak not to hope, but found it sparking inside anyways.Â
Emma was puttering around her house, trying to find a distraction from thinking about him. But she was coming up short. There was no clutter to put away, no dishes to wash, surprisingly no laundry to fold.
She flopped herself down on her couch and picked up the remote, but nothing on TV sounded good. Scrolling social media on her phone was just a blur of color that she couldnât focus on.
Her finger hovered over the messaging app. Would David think it was weird if she asked him for Killianâs number? Or ratherâwould Killian think that? Was it coming on too strong? Should she give space and wait for him to make a move? (Was she imagining all of this?)
This. This was why she didnât do dating. There were way too many variables.Â
But, goddammit. Couldnât this just be the one time the stars aligned and it justâŚhappened?
No; Emmaâs life never got to be that easy. And she couldnât even really justify going to bed yet because it was only 8:05; the sun had only just set.Â
She threw her head back and groaned. God, she was a mess.
But while she was wallowing inânot misery, not self-loathing, some other thingâshe heard the sound of an engine. No one else lived by her, and she hadnât ordered anything to be delivered. What the hell?
She turned and lookedâright into the glare of two headlamps from a 1970s muscle car. The engine shut off, killing the lightsâand her heart skipped several beats when she saw who was behind the steering wheel.
Without thinking any further, she jumped up and ran for the door. And promptly ran into her coffee table, but the inevitable bruise on her shin was worth it.
She ended up limping the rest of the way, then took a brief moment to compose herself. And yanked it open.
Killian had ran up to Emmaâs door, and was just about to knock when it swung open.
Part of him had been second-guessing this gesture the entire drive over, romantic as it was intended to be. She gave him a small smile, but that didnât completely assure him that this advance wasnât unwanted.
âSorry; Iââ he started, but she cut him off.
With a kiss.
She fisted her hands in the lapels of his leather jacket and pulled him close; he wasted no time in wrapping his arms around her and holding her tight.
When their lips metâit was instantaneous: whether they were real or imagined, sparks flew, jolting him from head to toe. It was incandescentâexplosiveâthrillingâterrifyingâin all the best ways.
They broke for air, but stayed close. âYou felt it, too?â he murmured; he had to ask.
âYeah,â she admitted. âSo much.â
âMaybe we should kiss againâjust to make sure,â he suggested.
She looked up at him and smirked, then dragged him in the house.
Killian wasnât sure of much; just that this felt right. And it could either break his heartâor bring it back to life. It was a risk he was willing to take.Â
Thankfully, Emma was of the same mindâmaybe even thinking about forever on her end. All he knew was that he was willing to spend just as long to figure it (them) outâespecially if every touch had the same electricity as the first.
