Existenz came out around the same time as the Matrix, and they share a lot of the same themes but Cronenberg’s take is a much stranger, more surreal ordeal and leaves a very unsettling vibe behind. His body-horror imagery is cranked to the fullest; images of organic, undulating skin-toned game consoles, living food, sweating, bloodied bodies, visceral squishy violence that looks heightened and plasticized, and acting that allows its performers to enter into uncanny valley territory.
