Me: As a transgender person, I find the decision to take hormones both difficult and complex. While estrogen helps me to feel more confident and comfortable in my body, it often has the unfortunate side effect of wreaking havoc on my mental health. Things that were possible and/or easy before my transition have become much more difficult, and the exacerbation of anxious and depressive behaviors is taxing in a way I could never have imagined before starting HRT. Additionally, I often feel as though my gender is validated through my use of hormone therapy. The societal pressure to perform my transness through medication is palpable, and while the choice to begin medical transition was my own, I feel as though the validity of my identity hinges upon that choice. Ultimately, I find myself wondering if I would have chosen to take estrogen had I been more secure in my identity before coming out. Had it not been for the inexorable pull of the trans narrative, would I still have found contentment in my identity without the need to medically intervene? Also me: tiddy good
