She was never destined for greatness. She was never meant to be a magical girl, Kyuubey says it himself.

When she does turn into a magical girl it's because she cannot stand the thought of the one she loves being in pain any longer. She can't stand to see him miserable, can't stand to watch him begin to hate life. She wishes it were her because she felt she had nothing to live for.

She also has such a strong sense of justice. She does everything she can to fight for what is right, to save people. To care for as many people as she possibly can.

But in the end, she's just not good enough.

I think Sayaka coming to the realization she's not good enough is what begins the descent into despair. A lot of things I've seen online say it's her final realization before becoming a witch, but I don't. I think in the back of her mind she's always known she'd never be good enough. If she had enough determination and willpower to push past those thoughts, she'd be able to continue fighting. However, the hatred she has for herself shown subtly throughout the show is ever present when fighting. Shes sloppy, she's clumsy, she lacks technique. Every tiny mistake is a weight added on to her disdain for herself.

I think I'd be a lot like Sayaka. My own biggest critic, my own top hater. I live my life for the sake of helping those around me, but often times it's to my own detriment.

I think if I were a magical person, I'd follow almost the exact same path as Sayaka does.
