After seeing numerous posts through the years over the lack of the worgen and goblin model updates, I decided to take some time to compile a timeline of the different answers we’ve gotten through the years. They don’t differ too much, but the mixed answers we’ve gotten have caused confusion. I’m really hoping they are shown off at Blizzcon this year and released after, but I won’t hold my breath. I know Blizzard’s art team is very busy, and I don’t want this to be an attack on them. It’s just disheartening to see other races get tweaks and new eye colors added when you still look like fuzzy spiked lump or a green potato.

I tried to be as thorough as I could and link all sources where the information was found. If you have anything else to add, feel free to comment. 

- At Blizzcon 2009 (August 21-22), the Cataclysm expansion was revealed. (source)

- The Cataclysm expansion is released on December 7, 2010. (source)

- At Blizzcon 2013 (November 8-9) many updated player assets were shown at the “Art of World of Warcraft” panel which stated that all races will be updated up to the draenei and blood elves. (source)

- In 2014 Blizzard begins publishing their “Artcraft” series showing off the new models. This begins with a preview of the female human model on January 23 and ends with the blood elf models on November 25 (After WoD’s release). (source)

- On October 8, 2014 during the WoD pre-launch event in Australia, Ion Hazzikostas shares some information that Blizzard had plans to possibly update the goblin and worgen models. 

Q: With the blood elf character models, are we going to be waiting until the next patch for them or are they going to be released kind of on the low-down mid-patch? A: The blood elf models <inaudible> in the next content patch. We’re gonna get them as soon as we possibly can. The plan always was to do all the classic races, like all the original 2004 races, then do Blood elf and Draenei, then move on to Worgen and Goblin after that…

He goes on to explain that the Draenei had to be bumped up in the order of completion because they’re more prevalent on Draenor, etc etc. Then apologizes to blood elves, saying their models will come later.

The plan always was to do all the classic races, like all the original 2004 races, then do Blood elf and Draenei, then move on to Worgen and Goblin after that.

- Warlords of Draenor is released on November 13, 2014 with all updated models except blood elves which are put in during patch 6.1.0. The patch 6.0.2 blog states again that “Blood Elves, Goblins, and Worgen are planned to be updated at a future point in time”. (source)

- This is from an AMA that happened on December 4, 2014 with many Blizzard members which the question about the goblin and worgen models was asked.

Q: Are new worgen and goblin models in the works? Any updates on that? A: No plans for that at the moment.

- In an interview published on June 27, 2015 featuring WoWhead staff and Ion Hazzikostas, models are brought up again. Ion states this isn’t his area, but he says that it “isn’t the end” and “something that they are refining, tweaking, and adding more options…”. (source)

- Around May 19, 2016, Genn Greymane’s updated models for Legion were data-mined including his updated human and worgen form. (source)

- During Blizzcon 2016 (November 4-5) Chris Robinson and John Hight were interviewed by Wowhead. One of the questions asked was about the update to worgen and goblin models again. Here are brief points.

Q: Worgen and goblin model updates?

- No specific date or that we’re definitely going to do it but it’s on the big list of stuff Blizzard thinks about. - Blizzard originally started out with those models as the bar but as usual they progressed beyond that with future models. - Blizzard didn’t want to dumb future high-resolution models down so they progressed forward on the model revamp for other races. - Blizzard knows they have to address worgen and goblins but it’s a balancing act.

- On December 2, 2016, a small trailer was released for the Mischief charity pet. The goblin was spruced up (like most models featured in Blizzard trailers/cinematics), but it caused lots of speculation on forums that the models may be coming soon. (source)

- Around January 19, 2017, Gallywix’s updated model was data-mined for Legion. Though different from the rest of the goblin models, I still thought I’d include it. (source)

- During the Blizzcon 2017 (November 3-4) Q&A panel another question about the models was asked. Here is a brief summary of what was said.

Q: When are we going to see updated worgen and goblin character models? A: Worgen and Goblin updates are not coming in 8.0, but they are actively being worked on.

- There was also a WoWhead Blizzcon 2017 interview with Patrick Dawson and Chris Robinson  that asked the same question as above about the models.

Q: Will we see a visual update for the worgen and goblin this expansion A: That’s not currently planned for this expansion.

- An interview was posted January 30, 2018 from MMO-Champion after they chatted with a few Blizzard members who stated: “Worgen and Goblin model updates are still planned for sometime during the Battle for Azeroth expansion”. (source)

- In an interview posted on April 5, 2018, WoWhead asked Jeremy Feasel and Frank Kowalkowski about the models once again.

Q: How are the Worgen and Goblin updates coming along? A: Right now Blizzard is focused on Allied Races. Nothing on the immediate list but they want to!
