Een man trad uit de menigte naar voren en sprak tot Zenmeester Ikkyu: ‘Meester, wilt U voor mij opschrijven wat de hoogste, de meest verheven wijsheid is?’
Ikkyu nam meteen zijn penseel en schreef in sierlijke letters: Aandacht.
‘Is dat alles?’ vroeg de man. ‘Zou U er misschien iets aan willen toevoegen?’
Ikkyu nam zijn penseel en schreef het woord twee maal:
De man sprak nu enigszins geïrriteerd: ‘Ik kan maar weinig wijsheid ontdekken in wat U zojuist schreef’.
Toen schreef Ikkyu hetzelfde woord drie maal:
Aandacht, Aandacht, Aandacht.
Vertwijfeld riep de man toen uit: ‘Maar wat betekent dat woord aandacht dan eigenlijk?’
Ikkyu antwoordde vriendelijk:
‘Aandacht betekent aandacht’.
A man stepped forward from the crowd and said to Zen Master Ikkyu: "Master, will You write for me what is the highest, the most sublime wisdom?"
Ikkyu immediately took his brush and wrote in graceful letters: Attention.
"Is that all?" The man asked. "Would you like to add something to it?"
Ikkyu took his brush and wrote the word twice:
The man now spoke somewhat annoyed: "I can discover little wisdom in what you just wrote."
Then Ikkyu wrote the same word three times:
Attention, Attention, Attention.
Desperately, the man then exclaimed: "But what does that word actually mean?"
'Attention means Attention
