Today’s Aerosols

As awareness of our environment grows, many people have questions about the products and packages they buy, including aerosol products. To help the environment for ourselves and our children, we need to know the facts, so we can be informed and responsible citizens, educators and consumers.

Many people are surprised to learn that aerosol products do not harm the earth’s ozone layer, and they do reduce waste through their long product shelf life and minimum spillage. Aerosol products provide important safety benefits by being tamper-resistant and tamper-evident. They require no mixing and are completely recyclable.

Aerosol Products do not contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) although a recent survey showed that 7 out of 10 thought the CFCs were still used in the products.

Aerosol manufacturers began to discontinue the use of CFCs when scientists discovered a possible link between the chemicals and the upper ozone. The U.S. banned the use of CFCs in 1978.

Today’s aerosol products do not harm the upper ozone. Aerosol cans are made of 25% recycled material and empty cans are recyclable.

Full Effect Wheel Cleaner

here are a quite a few wheel cleaners on the market, which actively remove iron contamination from both alloy wheels and paints such as the Carlack Complete Wheel cleaner, Wolfs Brake Duster and then more general purpose ones such as the brilliant CarPro Iron X.

We’d all heard the hype for years over Sonax Full effect wheel cleaner and as we we’ve been vigerously testing their products of late we had the pleasure of testing the latest version of the wheel cleaner.

ILIKE Wheel Cleaner this is safe on all alloys including polished and chrome wheels and is PH neutral which is a real bonus.

Application is easy, the retail spray trigger is very good and it really clings to the surface. The smell isn’t too bad either, much improved over it’s rivals. What we also found and was particularly unusual about this wheel cleaner is it doesn’t seem to react directly with the disc or the pads, which can sometimes be a worry. You can tell ILIKE really pay attention to the chemistry of the products and this really shows in this wheel cleaner.

We found the wheel cleaner so effective you could actually rinse with no agitation at all after leaving the product to do it’s magic whilst we got on with washing the car to leave the wheels virtually spotless. Only light agitation was needed to remove the heavily stained sections of the alloy.

How to Use Chalkboard Spray Paint

Chalkboard spray paint can quickly change any hard, smooth surface into a space you can write on with chalk. The glass in recycled picture frames, tabletops or dressers are just a few surfaces that can be transformed into a chalkboard using chalkboard spray paint. The erasable surface will allow your notes to be changed over and over again. Chalkboard spray paint is available in green or black.

Instructions

Sand the wood or glass you are painting. This will smooth away any bumps and provide a slight texture for the paint to adhere to. Wipe off the dust from the sanding with a dry rag.

Tape off or cover any area you do not want to paint using painter’s tape and newspapers.

Spray a paint primer over the surface you want to turn into a chalkboard. Allow the primer to dry.

Spray a coat of chalkboard paint over the primer. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly. The amount of drying time will depend on how thick the paint is and your weather conditions.

Sand the dry chalkboard surface lightly. Wipe off the dust with a dry rag.

Spray another coat of chalkboard paint on the chalkboard surface. Allow the paint to dry for 72 hours.

Lay a piece of chalk on the board and rub over the entire surface to condition it. Wipe off the chalk.

Plasti Dipping Wheels

Here’s some tips and tricks that I use when dipping wheels.

Before you start, make sure the wheel is 100% clean and 110% dry. The slightest bit of dirt or water can ruin the whole finish.

1. Mask the brakes with a garbage bag (I have 19 inch wheels and 1 garbage bag is enough per wheel). Covering the lugnuts with tape is entirely up to you. I usually chose not to and if I don’t like them dipped I peel it off the lugs down the road. My masked wheels: Here are the covered brakes. 2. Mask the tire with TIRE SHINE (I spray sime Tire-Wet onto a rag and rub it on the wheel) Make sure when before you dip, take a CLEAN and DRY rag and run it along the edges of the rim to make sure there is no tire shine on the rim itself. If there is, the dip won’t stick This will allow you to save much valuable time that you would have spent taping off the tire. The dip should peel off the “shined” tire with ease and any extra over-spray should be able to be cleaned off with a microfiber rag or a towel.

3. Use VERY light coats for the first 3-4 coats — if you do this, you’ll need more than the traditional 4-5 coats but the finish will come out super smooth. If you spray too thick, you’ll end up having the dip run down and pool up at the bottom. You’ll have to start over if that happens. Here is what 1 coat should look like:

What is dipping your car? “Dipping” refers to coating wheels, body panels, or the entire car in a temporary rubberized coating. The original product used was Plasti Dip, designed to “DIP” tool handles in a rubberized non-slip coating. Plasti Dip initially came in a handy can and had a thick viscosity to give an extra thick coating to those tool handles. Eventually they offered the product in gallons and aerosols, any some bright person figured out that you can use this stuff on wheels and body panels.

The Hazards of Spray Paint Fumes

Everyone knows that the inhalation of spray paint fumes has negative effects to your health, but just how hazardous are they?

VOCs are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids and include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products including paints, lacquers and paint strippers.

If you read a popular spray paint’s ingredient list, you will find a slew of names that are hard to decipher.

Short-term side effects may include eye, nose and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, and nausea. Long-term side effects may be as hazardous as damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system. Some organics are even suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.

Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis, fatigue, dizziness.

Waterproof your RC Car with Plasti Dip

Radio controlled (RC) cars are popular with hobbyists of all ages, which isn’t really surprising, because they’re super fun to drive. They come in all shapes and sizes, and many of them can actually go faster (by scale) than real cars. While some are built for speed, others are designed to handle all types of terrain, and can easily traverse pavement, gravel, dirt, mud, and snow.

But, driving an RC car through wet conditions can present a problem. Most RC cars aren’t fully waterproofed—some of their parts and components may be, but a lot is still left exposed to the elements. And, as with most any electronic device, RC cars don’t do well when their circuits get wet.
