   THE  AIR  WAS  TENSE  AND  HEAVY WITH  POSSIBILITY  as  the  money was  split  in  three  by  the  blond  man’s   rugged  hands.    occasionally ,  tuco  and  angel  eyes  shared  a  glance  --    angel ‘s  face  stony  and  unmoving ,    tuco  glancing  away  quickly ,  remembering all too well  the  beating  he’d  suffered  a day ago.     as  he  watched  coins  clatter  into  place ,   felt  sweat  trickle  down his  neck,   listened  to   no - name’s  quiet  counting  ,   he  couldn’t help  but  wonder  what  life was going  to  be  like from  now on.   his  whole future seemed like  a whole  stretch  of  unknown  blackness in front of him ;   which was  nothing  new.   angel eyes had  woken up  this  morning  thinking  he’d  either  have  his  way  with  the  gold,     or  die    --    he  wasn’t  unhappy  with this  outcome  in  particular.     all  guns  had been  discarded  ,   all bullets taken out and glistening  in the  sun.

  naturally ,  tuco  split  moments  after  the  counting  was  finished,  all vengeance  on  ‘ blondie ‘  forgotten  now  that he was  considerably  richer than he  had  been.   no  amount of  money’s  worth  your  neck,  i’ve  realized!   he exclaimed ,   voice jolly  as  he slapped  no - name jovially on the back.    that’s how  gamblers  get  it.      soon  after ,  it  was  just  angel  eyes  and  no - name standing  alone  in  the circle of  sad  hill.   the  man dressed in  black and the man dressed  in  white.   the  bad  and  the  good.   at  first,   their  eye contact  was  tense   ...   but then  angel  broke  it ,   retrieving  his  pipe  from his  inner  coat. 

     WHAT  A  SURPRISE  --   NOT  REALLY  --   TO FIND  himself   looking  down the  barrel  of  no -  name’s    revolver !   angel  eyes  was a  strange case  study  :   any  challenge,   any  bump  in the  road ,  any  misstep  in the  plan  gave  him an  odd  sense  of  glee  ;  as  was shown  now ,   the  way  instinctively   he  grinned  up  at   the  blond -  haired  man  who  towered above him .      in  bounty  hunting,   he  was  unmatched.   he was  damn good  at what he  did ,  and  no one  dared  mess with  him ,   knowing  how  cruel  and  apathetic  he could  become .    no - name,    though,   interested  him.    angel eyes  was  a  cat.     no - name  was a   mouse.    yes,   angel  eyes knew  that  he’d catch  and  kill him  eventually  ,  inevitably   --    it was  in his  nature to  always  win   --   but a  good  chase  was  not something  he  normally was  awarded.    

       DESPITE  BEING  SPOKEN   WITH  A   FRACTION   of   coolness,   as the  mysterious  stranger  was  wont,     the  words  make  angel  eyes ‘   lips  quirk  upward  a  moment ,    hard,   mean  eyes  shining  with  amusement  :  naturally,   THE  GOOD  would  bring  up  such a  sentimental  thought  here in  the  prison  camp.     it  had been a  while  since he had  any  such  thought,  any sympathy ;    a  man was  just  a man  here  in the  wild  west,   and  he’d  do  what  it  took  to  survive  ...   and  make a  tidy  sum  at  the  end  of the  day.   angel eyes  shakes  out  the  match  he’d  use  to  light  his  cigarette  ,   puffing  out  smoke   and   eyeing   the  man  who  stood  by  the  window,   watching,    watching  .   always  watching  through  squinted  eyes.       “   you’re   an  interesting  fella   ...     aren’t   ya?  “
