Venezia’s Hidden History and Little-Known Locales
Directed by Oliver Astrologo and Nils Astrologo, ‘Venezia’ ventures deep into the hidden history and little-known locales of one of the world’s most magical cities. Produced in partnership with rené caovilla, a master Venetian shoemaker, the film journeys above the city’s terracotta terrain, through its crystal blue canals, and inside its otherwise unknown workshops. Astrologo adventures to capture the everyday life of venice’s inhabitants, where original gondola wooden oars are still crafted by hand and luxurious fabrics are carefully woven on handlooms.

Note: I found a very slightly better photo of this work online than the original one submitted, so I’ve used that one instead. Some works just don’t have many photos available online, however, or only low-res images. That’s why i have so much gratitude and appreciation for digital archive photographers and awesome folks like supernaut/Frances d’Ath.

Unknown Icon Painter (Novgorod School)
Sts Theodore Stratelates and Theodore Tyron
Russia (15th Century)
Tempera on Panel and Gilding, 53.5 x 38 cm.
Here we see two saints who were very popular in Novgorod, warriors and martyrs for their faith in Christ. Theodore Stratelates was particularly revered as the patron saint of soldiers. This depiction of holy warriors belongs to a type of icon which was widespread in Novgorod art in the 15th and 16th centuries. Selected saints were shown full length, frontally, in a row, as in this icon. In the left hand of each saint is a sword, and in the right a spear resting on the ground. In the attire of the warrior saints we see red, green, yellow and olive tones. At the top in the green segment of sky is a waist-length depiction of Christ blessing the saints. The icon is related to a trend in Novgorod art of the second half of the 15th century which was characterized by the creation of elegant, fragile forms.

Jaspar Beckx
Portrait of Diego Bemba, Servant of Don Miguel de Castro, Emissary of Soyo
Netherlands (1640–47)
Oil on Panel, 75 × 62 cm.
This picture by the Dutch still-life painter Jaspar Beckx belongs to a triptych owned and likely commissioned by Johann Moritz of Nassau, who served as Dutch Brazil’s governor-general from 1637 to 1644 and was an employee of the Dutch West India Company. It depicts Diego Bemba, one of two servants who accompanied the envoy from Soyo to Dutch Brazil. Dressed in a green garment accentuated with a wide white collar and metal buttons, Bemba holds a lidded woven basket receptacle for precious articles. Moritz assembled a collection of Brazilian taxidermy, rare fauna, paintings, weapons, and articles of indigenous apparel and gave choice items to Friederich Wilhelm of Brandeberg, Frederick III of Denmark, and Louis XIV of France. Moritz gave this painting, along with several others and objects collected in Brazil, to Frederick III of Denmark.
