The SUV crawled up a winding, narrow road lined with towering pine trees before finally coming to a stop. Namjoon killed the engine, turning to Y/N with a proud, dimpled smile.
They had arrived at a breathtaking, secluded clearing hidden completely away from the bustling world. Below them, a crystal-clear lake mirrored the vast blue sky, surrounded by rolling green hills. But the best part was a large, plush checkered blanket already spread out over the soft grass. Sitting right in the middle was a massive wicker basket.
Namjoon stepped out and walked around to open her door, guiding her over to the blanket. As he opened the basket, Y/N’s jaw dropped.
He hadn't just bought random snacks. Inside was a beautiful, thoughtful spread featuring both traditional Korean kimbap and ddeokbokki, sitting right alongside fresh Danish smørrebrød and classic pastries. He had painstakingly researched her heritage just to make her feel at home.
Y/N let out a genuine squeal of absolute happiness, her eyes lighting up like stars. Before he could even sit down, she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him so tightly that he stumbled back half a step.
Namjoon let out a deep, boisterous laugh, his chest vibrating against hers as his strong arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her slightly off the ground. "Do you like it?" he asked, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss against her temple.
"I love it! You are unbelievable, Kim Namjoon," she beamed, pulling away with a flushed, glowing face.
They sat down cross-legged on the blanket, the cool breeze rustling the leaves above them. Namjoon popped open two cold cans of grape soda, handing one to her. "A toast," he chuckled, clinking his can gently against hers. "Since I'm the designated driver today, no fancy wine. Just good old soda."
"To the best driver and picnic planner in Korea," Y/N cheered, taking a sweet, refreshing sip.
For the next few minutes, they happily dove into the food. Y/N excitedly showed him the traditional way to eat the Danish open-faced sandwiches, while Namjoon made sure she got the best pieces of the seasoned Korean beef.
As the initial excitement quieted into a peaceful, cozy atmosphere, Namjoon set his soda down. He looked at her, his eyes warm and intensely curious. "Hey, Y/N? I’ve been meaning to ask you since Minseok told me... what does your name actually mean? It sounds so unique and beautiful when I say it."
Y/N smiled softly, tracing the edge of her cup as she thought about it. "My mother gave it to me. In her language, the roots translate to something like 'delicate yet strong.' She wanted me to have a gentle heart, but the strength to survive whatever life threw at me."
Namjoon’s eyes widened slightly, a look of profound admiration washing over his handsome features. "Delicate yet strong," he repeated softly, the words rolling off his tongue like poetry. "Wow. I really, really love that. It suits you perfectly, Y/N. You have this incredibly pure, delicate soul, but the fact that you are standing here, smiling after everything... you are one of the strongest people I’ve ever met."
Y/N’s heart did a violent, happy flip at his words. To hide her sudden shyness, she leaned forward, tilting her head. "And what about you, Kim Namjoon? What does your name mean?"
Namjoon rubbed the back of his neck, a cute, boyish flush creeping up his ears. "Ah, my name? My parents had it chosen by a naming philosopher. The 'Nam' means South, as in South Korea. And the 'Joon' means talented or wise. So, altogether, it basically translates to 'the talent from the South.'"
Y/N grinned, her eyes crinkling. "The talent from the South. Well, they definitely got that right. It fits you perfectly, too."
Namjoon laughed softly, his hand reaching out across the blanket to find hers again, squeezing it gently under the afternoon sun.
Namjoon adjusted his position on the blanket, turning fully toward her. He looked out over the sparkling, quiet lake for a moment before turning his warm, focused gaze back to her face. "Hey, Y/N... if you don't mind me asking, why haven't you ever been to Korea before this trip? Since your father is Korean, I was just curious if you ever visited when you were younger."
Y/N went quiet, her fingers tracing the checkered pattern of the picnic blanket. She stared at the grass, thinking back through the history her mother had shared with her.
"Actually," she began softly, her voice barely carrying over the rustling leaves, "I was born here. I was born in Gwangju."
Namjoon’s eyebrows raised in slight surprise, but he didn't interrupt, letting her speak at her own pace.
"But because my father left the very day I was born, my mother couldn't bear to stay," Y/N explained, a distant look in her eyes. "She packed everything up. She left the country when I was only three months old and returned to Denmark. So I don't remember Korea at all. I was raised entirely in Denmark, and because my mother had to work so hard to support us, my grandparents actually did most of the raising."
She stopped, taking a deep, grounding breath. Slowly, she lifted her head and looked directly into Namjoon's eyes, her gaze soft, vulnerable, and completely unguarded.
"I didn't return for twenty-seven years," Y/N whispered, her lower lip trembling just a fraction. "Because I was scared. I was terrified that if I came back here, the rejection would feel real all over again. I was scared of the ghost of a man who didn't want me."
Namjoon felt a profound wave of tenderness wash over him, his heart aching for the tiny baby who had been carried away, and the brave woman who had finally found the courage to cross the ocean and face her past.
Namjoon didn’t say a word at first. Instead, he reached out and gently placed his large, warm hands on both sides of her face, his palms cradling her cheeks with the utmost tenderness. He forced her to look directly into his eyes, ensuring she couldn't look away from the truth.
"You are so incredibly brave, Y/N," Namjoon murmured, his deep voice thick with genuine admiration. "To face a fear that big, to come all the way back to a place that caused you so much subconscious pain... that takes a level of strength most people don't have. I am so proud of you for being here."
Y/N’s cheeks immediately flushed a deep, burning crimson under the warmth of his palms. Overwhelmed by the raw intensity of his gaze, she let out a soft whine and tried to tilt her head down, hiding her face right in the center of his hands.
"Namjoon, stop," she whispered, her voice muffled against his skin as a shy giggle escaped her lips. "Please stop looking at me like that, you are making me way too shy."
Namjoon let out a low, breathless chuckle, captivated by how adorable she looked when she blushed. Instead of letting her pull away, he slid his hands down to her shoulders, leaning forward slightly. He tilted his head and pressed a soft, lingering kiss right against the sensitive skin of her neck.
Y/N gasped softly, her entire body freezing as a violent, electric flip shook her heart. A beautiful warmth rushed straight to her toes, leaving her skin tingling where his lips had just brushed against her.
As Namjoon slowly pulled his head back, his hands moved to gently find hers, intertwining their fingers tightly on the picnic blanket. Y/N lifted her head, her shyness melting away into a profound sense of security. They just stayed there, sitting close under the afternoon sun, looking at each other with pure, unguarded affection, completely wrapped up in a love that was finally rewriting her entire world.
Namjoon looked down at her features, taking in the soft curve of her jaw and the way her eyes crinkled. A playful smirk tugged at the corner of his lips. "You know," he murmured softly, his voice full of warmth, "you don't look half-Korean at all."
Y/N let out a sudden, breathless giggle, completely caught off guard by his observation. The sheer lightness of the moment made her lean back, losing her balance playfully until she fell right backward onto the soft checkered blanket.
Namjoon chuckled softly, shifting his weight to lean over her. He looked down at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated adoration. Reaching out, his large hand gently brushed a stray lock of hair away from her forehead, his fingers softly petting her hair against the grass.
Y/N looked up at him through her lashes, a sweet, meaningful smile on her lips. "Maybe it's because my mother's genes were just more loving," she whispered.
Namjoon's heart swelled at her words, loving how she could now reference her past with a gentle sense of peace.
Wanting to see more of the beautiful scenery, Y/N gave him a cute, bright look, her eyes wide and hopeful. "Can we go and walk by the lake now? Please?"
"Your wish is my command," Namjoon smiled, his deep dimples appearing instantly.
He sat up and offered both of his hands to her. Y/N grabbed them, and with one effortless tug of his strong arms, he helped her get right up onto her feet. Once she was standing close to him, Namjoon didn't let her step away. Instead, he slid his large, warm hand around the side of her waist, pulling her gently against his hip.
Y/N felt that familiar, beautiful flip in her chest. Smiling up at him, she mirrored his gesture, confidently sliding her own arm around his waist, her hand resting against the soft fabric of his sweater. Wrapped securely in each other's side-hugs, they turned together and began to take a slow, peaceful walk down the grassy slope toward the edge of the sparkling, quiet water.
