Nikola frowned and put down the book he’d been reading on the nightstand. “Hello?” Not entirely sure what to prepare himself for, he got out of bed and knelt down to look underneath it. What he did see made the creases in his forehead deepen. “Maria? What are you doing under here?”

“… by all means, Nikola.” She shook her head. “As rude as you want to be about whatever it is you’re so eager to say, go ahead and say it.”

“I think we should explore other triggers first, there’s bound to be something. God, I wish they’d left a handbook...”

He opened his eyes and pulled an aged book out from under his journals. “How much do you know about vampire…mates? And I don’t mean their ceremonies, just the connection itself.”

“It’s certainly not easy…” as she looked over the text in the old book

“It doesn’t indicate much for duration, distance, any sort of variable that may have played a role.”

“Remember the last trip you took, two weeks, and I told you we were having technical issues so I could only text you? I lied. The point was to go the entire time without hearing your voice or seeing your face, and I thought I’d feel it more than you because I have more source blood.” 

“Regardless I was injured on that mission so anything I felt would have been tainted. Did you experience anything?”

“It was worse, but nothing I haven’t dealt with normally when we’ve been separated for much longer periods. I’m hesitant to try again though, for obvious reasons. Now we know it has further-reaching effects, that opens up a whole new can of worms…”

“So what is it you want to do about it Nikola? What are you thinking?”

“I want to know before SCIU do. That, and the idea of exploring deeper into what we have is awesome and kinda romantic.”

“Awesome, romantic… painful and possibly dangerous.” She sighed. “That look in your eye; you have something planned as an experiment already. Otherwise you wouldn’t be telling me about it yet.”

“Actually, as far as another experiment goes, it’s hard to tell what’d be worth it. For example, you obviously don’t feel my pain or you wouldn’t shoot me so much.”

“Of course… we weren’t actually together that, which undoubtedly played a role”

"Going with your idea, if all this is at least triggered by separation, then why haven't we noticed anything yet? And what would be the point of handing out abilities like this if you can't use them when you're together?"
