I was referring to the fact that on this blog (and many others) John green is criticized and crucified for his treatment of mental illness and the fact that he is mentally ill is often obscured/erased, I did not in any way imply that his mental illness is an excuse for any of his other behavior, and was requesting that everybody keep his situation in mind when the subject of mental illness comes up
okay but even so the way he treats other oppressed identities is really Not Okay.... and if heās still romanticizing mental illness (which i donāt know all the details about) even though he has it thatās still hurtful to other people with mental illness especially if theyāre coming from less privileged places than him. like yeah itās important to keep it in mind but nobody has to like or accept what he does because of it. and like look at the example the one anon gave ā jgās characters made dismissive comments about bpd which is not a condition he has (iirc, he has ocd and anxiety). thatās still offensive. thatās still treating mentally ill people like trash. he doesnāt get a pass.Ā

one thing that was especially painful about tfios was that stories where people with diseases can see themselves represented are already too rare. and then thereās one thatās mainstream and finally, thereās hope, but itās a story that romanticizes illness instead of realizing people with diseases are more than just their conditions. the way john green treated cancer isnāt painful just because itās trivializing, but because itās the most mainstream portrayal of young people who are diseased and it projected the refusal to treat them with dignity into that mainstream and made it popular, fun, and cute. thatās whatās especially painful to me.
