Inspiration Is Perishable - Act on It Immediately.

Speed is being fast for the sake of being fast. Velocity is directional. It gets you to where you want to go. We often mistake speed for velocity, thinking that any movement is good. But directionless movement is just wasted energy.

Don’t conflate confidence and certainty. You can communicate uncertainty with confidence. Most people do the opposite, thinking the only way to communicate confidence is with certainty.

Training is the highest leverage activity a manager can do to increase the output of an organization. If a manager spends 12 hours preparing training for 10 team members that increases their output by 1% on average, the result is 200 hours of increased output from the 10 employees (each works about 2000 hours a year). Don’t leave training to outsiders, do it yourself.

A team with a good code review process is improving their codebase and improving each other. A team with a bad code review process will at best be stuck at a local maximum, and more likely be suffering from declining code quality and actively hurting each other.

A filter bubble is not a choice, an unfortunate wrong turn on an intellectual journey towards the truth. It is, in fact, a place of comfort, and the issue at hand is not the social networks’ drive for engagement, but our own desire for an escape from day-to-day life.

Our most meaningful tasks are less likely to have deadlines than tasks that are relatively unimportant.
