Let’s get one thing across here, fandom: Kara Danvers is not gay. Nor is she bi.
Let’s clear up something else: had she not been presented as straight so blatantly, I’d be right there with you seeing subtext everywhere.
But, and of course there’s a but, she has been. She is not Clarke Griffin. She’s not even human. her people were born into castes or “guilds” and that was it. They were matched to each other by a computer, and divorce was illegal. This was the world she was born into.
That being said, of course none of that would matter if she were born preferring women, or being attracted to men as well as women. But, again, she wasn’t.
Here, she states very, very emphatically that she doesn’t prefer women. In fact, she displays no attraction to women, period. Her comments about Lucy Lane that some of you choose to interpret as something they aren’t? Borne of jealousy, because she felt inferior to Lucy when it came to meriting James’s attention. As though Lucy were perfect and she could never hope to compete.
I think we can all agree the love triangle/square which ensued was terribly written, thought out and executed.
But then there was Adam. Who Kara sent packing because she was putting him in danger. Not because she didn’t like him. Then there was James, and before them all, a nameless man she was matched with an 81% compatibility rating on an online dating site. Now, there’s Mon-El.
Kara is straight. As in only interested in men. Why is that terrible? It isn’t. Because it’s not a choice she’s made, despite what some of you think. It’s how she was born. Just like how Alex was clearly born with the predisposition to prefer women. Being gay or straight is not a choice. Inferring that is what is homophobic and disgusting. Not failing to ship two women in a fictional tv show together. That’s the same rhetoric conservatives use when they talk about ~reconditioning~ gays. No, she won’t just wake up one day and be attracted to women. As a bisexual person? That is not how that works.
She’d have known, like Alex, on some level for her entire life.
And if she had, this post wouldn’t even be a thing. Because I totally get (and support!) the need and desire to see a an lgbtq+ superheroine on screen. But we have that: Wonder Woman. Or we will, shortly. DC has confirmed that their most iconic female superhero is bisexual. That’s amazing! Why isn’t anyone excited about this? Diana is, I hope, going to be representation young girl need and want to see.
Kara is also not Diana. She was born straight, preferring men. That’s not a crime, or homophobic. It’s a fact. Trying to counter that makes you whatever kind of ~ist or ~phobic buzzword you’d call anyone who would disagree with you. Like, say, those who ship karamel.
I am not racist or homophobic (lmao on that one, seriously) because I ship two white-passing, straight people together. That is a preference, and just because I see chemistry there that you do not does not give you the right to come into the mon-el and karamel tags and post hate deliberately where you know I’ll see it. Or come into my ask box accusing me of being something I’m not.
You know what’s gross here? Karolsen and Supercorp shippers being so butthurt as to resort to online bullying because their ships aren’t canon. as if karamel fans have any sway over the writers’ decisions. Spoiler: we don’t! And neither do you. No amount of whining will force them to retcon Kara’s entire character that’s been established for a season and a half just because you want her to be gay and kiss Lena Luthor.
I don’t ship supercorp. I don’t ship karolsen. If you do? Great for you! Enjoy it in your own space. Write fics about them! Hell, I might even read your fics and give them, in au context, a shot. But if you hate karamel? Stay out of the tag and leave the ship’s fans alone. It’s that easy.
