Suicide Squad: The Good, Bad, and Just Plain Evil of the DC Universe
No spoilers. Keep reading 😁😁 Since re-inventing the superhero genre in 2000 with the release of "X-Men," the Marvel brand has kept a steady lead over DC. Though, one has been left to wonder for nearly two decades of splitting up their properties between all of these studios would eventually come back to haunt them. It did. In a big way. 3 tries and 20th Century Fox couldn't put together a watchable Fantastic Four movie, while Sony basically gave up on Spider-Man. The powerhouse of the 21st Century has been Disney/Marvel. Their films crush the box office, but some of their titles lack staying power (Could you really see yourself watching the first two Thor movies again even five years from now?). Yesterday, a friend of mine commented on how Disney/Marvel has a formula. And while most films of the genre do, DisMarv tends to follow it to a T. Even though, they generally tell great stories, their reveals and jokes about character names or costumes can be pretty obvious. Also, Marvel gives too much homework to casual superhero fans. They cater to a more seasoned fan base. If I have to google one more villain that shows up in a post-credits scene, I may scream. As fans, we give Disney/Marvel a pass because we kinda assume the movies will be good. We attempt to forget that Iron Man 2 was pretty ridiculous and Thor was boring. You may not feel it, but Marvel is in fact slowing down, making room for a competitor to gain an edge. Is this where DC comes in? Perhaps. Except for the fact that popular opinion is that their post-Christopher Nolan movies stink. It's a little harsh, when the actual problem is that DC doesn't really know what their fans want. But neither do the fans. They loved the idea of Nolan's "gritty reboot," but love the playfulness and lightness of Joss Whedon. DC just can't figure out which one they are good at. I don't think the films of the DC Universe are as bad as critics seem to believe. They suffer from different problems. Man of Steel was slow, and not always visual appealing, while BvS (I am referring to the superior 'Ultimate Edition' here, and for the remainder of this essay) while hosting some beautiful shots was just uneven. I found Man of Steel fairly decent and honestly enjoyed BvS. Now where does Suicide Squad Come in? I gotta say. It's hard not to enjoy this movie, though, there are a few distractions. DC loves their fireworks shows. Expect to see many more big swirling things in the sky in future films. It's becoming a trademark. Bad Vs Evil: Everyone loves a good redemption story. Just remember no one in this movie is a good guy, and redemption is hard to come by. Though some in the film get pretty close. It's fun to watch bad guys beat up things, isn't it? This film boast plenty of great fight scenes, though they might've borrowed their formula from a certain group from Marvel... The dialogue: You can tell exactly when the movie wants you to laugh, but often you won't do so. Too many scenes are packed with very little dialogue except predictable one-liners. That being said, the jokes that land, land hard. This film also makes great use of visual gags. The cast: The best thing they could have done for this movie was to add the likes of Will Smith, Viola Davis, and Margot Robbie. Two vets like Smith and Davis lead their scenes and help us figure out where to look. (That'll make sense when you see it.) Will and Margot remind us that this is not their first film together, as they shine when they share scenes. Jared Leto and Robbie on the other hand (save for one actually GREAT scene) don't always mesh. Though, my actual biggest problem with Leto as the Joker is that he burns too slowly. He isn't the energetic Joker that we have seen or read in the past. Usually. (There be a few exceptions 😏.) But he does make the Joker his own without taking over the movie. He's someone you'll probably want a little more of. A difficult task, since the last guy to fill the clown shoes won an Oscar. Who wants to follow that? The runtime is quite brisk. Especially compared to DC's last couple films. And even the majority of the plot only takes place over a small period. Also Magic. This is what DC is known for. Marvel has always been mostly about science. Everyone's powers are genetic, or by science or explosions. DC has been known to tamper with magic and we get a lot of that here. It's a great way to divert from the unnecessary gritty realism that they have been throwing at us, a diversion started in BvS. It also has some heart that other films in the DCEU have not been able to tap into. Reshoots in the eleventh hour show us that the studio is listening. Lightening up the film a bit was a great idea. It kept it moving forward and fun. This is another big film that is awesome in the movie theater, but may not translate to your home tv. I recommend catching it in theaters. -K
