Lightning glared as Fury, her son’s black and red chocobo chick, glared at her from atop his head. Like many a chocbo chick, he seemed to think that perching on top of his owner’s head was the perfect idea. Unlike most chocobos, however, he seemed to think he could glare at her from his perch without consequences.
“Mom, are you glaring at Fury again?” Taren asked.
“Of course, sweetie.” Lightning smiled. “I’m not glaring at you. I’m glaring at your chocobo.”
The little bird chirped a challenge at her, and Lightning’s eye twitched. She couldn’t even use her glare at full power, just in case Taren thought she was glaring at him. And she couldn’t exactly brandish a weapon at Fury while he was on top of Taren’s head.
Well, she’d just have to wait until he got down. Or maybe she could ask Diana if she could borrow Strangles? The snake wouldn’t be bigger than the chocobo forever - in fact Fury would one day be far larger than him - but for the time being, the grass snake still had the edge in size. She wouldn’t actually let Strangles eat Fury, but a bit of a scare might do him some good.
Alas, Strangles was currently enjoying a life of luxury in Diana’s dorm room at Beacon, and the snake generally stayed in a special environment in Vanille’s lab whenever Diana was away. Hopefully, the redhead was smart enough not to let the snake hang out with her hamsters. Those hamsters of hers, and Professor Cuddles in particular, might be far too intelligent for normal hamsters, but she doubted they’d have much luck against a hungry snake.
Then again, it would be just like Diana to somehow teach her pet snake to be friends with hamsters.
On top of Taren’s head, Fury did the bird equivalent of smirk. He seemed to have worked out that so long as he was on top of Taren’s head, he was safe.
“Hey, Taren!” Fang walked into the room with her spear and a smaller one for the boy. “You said you wanted to practice with a spear? How about we go practice outside?”
“We’ll have to leave Fury in here with your mom though. We wouldn’t want to accidentally hit him.”
The chocobo gave a panicked squawk as Fang plucked him off Taren’s head and put him down on the table in front of Lightning. The pink-haired woman waited until her wife and son had gone into the backyard before she looked down at the chocobo.
“Well, well, well. Look what we have here…”
“Are mom and Fury okay?” Taren asked.
Fang followed his gaze. She could see Lightning and Fury fighting through the window. The tiny chocobo was bouncing around the room like an avian pinball while doing his best to peck Lightning. Lightning, meanwhile, was looking for a way to grab her son’s pet without hurting him.
“Don’t worry, kiddo. That’s just how people like your mom and Fury bond.”
