As a French fan and a very new β¨enjoyerβ¨of iwtv and tvl, I was really surprised and interested to see how people reacted to the Auvergne sequence in 3x02 / 1x02.
So, since Iβm a very annoying nerd that loves languages, I wanted to yap about why I personally think itβs great that they speak English and not French.
[I was inspired by some tweets Iβve seen, including this one highlighting the very cool costuming choices for the next episode, shoutout π«Ά]
At first I was surprised by the use of English, because you would expect all of these flashbacks to be in French, right ? I even saw some fans say it would be more historical accurate. But then I remembered what I was taught about the French language, and actuallyβ¦
In the 18th century in France, most people didnβt « speak FrenchΒ Β» historically (at least not the language we know today). In Auvergne in 1772, all these characters would learn and speak the regional dialect, called Auvergnat. Itβs an occitan language, closer to Latin or Catalan than French. So historically speaking, nope, the Lioncourts wouldnβt speak French in 1772! π
I find that fact illuminating, because it leads me to believe that (at least in my headcanon) :
1- Lestat didnβt know the language spoken in Paris until he got there, so it must have been quite difficult for him to find his footing. Iβm now even more inclined to forgive Sam Reid for his French accent and pronunciation (I think heβs brilliant in the show btw π), because realistically poor Lestat must have struggled back then too π !
2- Gabrielle/Gabriella would feel even more alienated in this family, because not only was she canonically Italian (and probably spoke the dialect of her hometown), she most likely had to learn Auvergnat (and not the more widely known French language) to understand her husband. It also explains why she wouldnβt have a French accent ^^

Armand immediately dipping out after making Daniel like the dad who went to go get milk and Lestat and Louis having to step in and gentle parent this 80-year-old fledglingβ¦ theyβre not his makers theyβre the makers who stepped up
i remember when stiles first got his jeep. it belonged to his mother. she wanted him to have it. the first time when he took a spin behind the wheel, he went straight into a ditch. i gave him his first roll of duct tape that day.

One thing i am fascinated by with TV!TVL so far is that it uses form to construct meaning in a way that I don't really associate with television.
In 'Detroit' the editing is frenetic and psychadellic, and the storytelling is sort of flippant. Lestat is putting on a mask, he's high as a kite, and he's deflecting.
In 'Toledo', the flashbacks are short because Lestat doesn't want to dwell on the past. A sort of calm and relief descends upon the viewer when Louis is onscreen not just because we all love Louis and feel comfortable with him and his voice but because Lestat loves him and takes solace in him.
The form tells us something in this very explicit way. The language in S1-S2 is highly literary, so gorgeous and prose-like and mesmirising. The FORM here is so literary.

Louis owning half of Lestat's merch sales, opening up a hotel specifically to invite Lestat to the grand opening Knowing it will be trashed somehow just so he can force Lestat to talk to him in civil court, insisting on a "fan experience" to make up for the property damage (the lawyer literally said "yes you have to fuck him if you want him to drop the lawsuit"), using the meeting to try and force Lestat to talk about their relationship problems, and then going to the concert just to look uninterested the entire time.....he is in fact a beautiful unwell!
