sensei was sitting on the bench you usually meet up at, bowed forward, almost curling into herself. it was nothing you had seen from her often — sensei was strong, confident, cheery, & stood straight & tall all of the time. but now, she looked small & fragile, almost breakable. her hands were shivering, & she had all but forgotten about the world around her. even when you take a few steps closer, a bit farther away than arm’s length but at a distance that she would normally have noticed you — she still doesn’t.
your heart sinks. torino was vague, but you know what was plaguing her: family. you don’t know the details, but you know about her loss, her sacrifice. you know that her husband was dead & her child had been given away in order to keep it out of all of this, to keep it safe. you should have guessed that sensei would still be devastated over all of it, should have guessed the anniversary of her husband’s passing would still weigh heavily on her. it hadn’t been that long, after all.
something in your chest squeezes painfully as your incessant insecurities resurface at full force, because — right, that was right. nana had a family already. a family she loved, & had lost, & missed dearly. & you were not part of that family, no matter how much you wished to be. part of you wants to turn around & leave, pretend that you hadn’t seen anything, it’s not your place to intrude; but the other, bigger part, the heroic part couldn’t stand to see strong, ever smiling nana like this, so broken & withdrawn. you had to do something about it, & you’d come prepared with a plan.
❛ …sensei ? ❜ you wait for her to look up, & then, arms extend enthusiastically: ❛ surprise ! ❜ when you offer her the little sunflower, you smile just like she had taught you — wide & beaming & heartfelt, going from ear to ear. ❛ something to make you smile, sensei ! ❜

It was a lingering feeling. It had started small, but gradually it became... more. Much more. As days went by, getting closer and closer to that cursed date... It became harder and harder to keep to herself. And so now here she was, intending to meet up with Toshinori, only to look like something she barely ever let anyone see.
How long had she’d been sitting on the bench waiting? She’d gotten so trapped in her own mind, she’d lost all connection with the outside world around her. So she sat alone... and scared. And broken. --- She doesn’t even realize it, but tears had soaked her face, and found their way to the ground in a cascading silence, shoulders trembled and she hugged herself the same way she had hugged her own child.
If Toshinori saw her like this --- what would he think? 𝐼'𝓂 𝓈𝑜 𝓌𝑒𝒶𝓀.
He looked up to someone strong. Someone confident.
Someone... happy.
𝐼'𝓂 𝓃𝑜𝓉... 𝓈𝓉𝓇𝑜𝓃𝑔 𝑒𝓃𝑜𝓊𝑔𝒽. 𝐼𝓉'𝓈 𝓂𝓎 𝒻𝒶𝓊𝓁𝓉. 𝐼𝓉'𝓈---
...Sensei?
----She’s snapped back to reality as a familiar voice pulls her from that dark place she’d found herself in. Eyes wide, heart skipping a beat as her eyes meet such a bright and innocent face. How long...? How long had he been waiting?
Eyes shimmering with fresh tears, they glide down to look at what Toshinori had in his hands. ---A sunflower? Eyes meet that smile again, and she can’t help but return it, what with such a warm and pure gesture he offered... it too helped fill that void she felt in her soul. In her heart. He was her sunshine, and she’d take good care of him, help him grow into... something even more than she could ever be.
Arms extend and without even a word, she pulls Toshinori into a warm hug, being careful to not crush the flower he’d gotten for her. She holds him, and she’s sure to hold him as if he were her own child, someone she loved so dearly.
“----Thank you Toshi.” words are overflowing with gratitude and yet... something about her tone seemed so sad still.
