MY IDEA OF THE WORST POSSIBLE OUTCOME:

The plan to strip Thanos of the gauntlet works and he and his army are completely killed or detained with as few as possible hero casualties. All of the infinity stones are collected and either disposed of or redispersed in order to avoid one person having complete power over all of them. After battling, the Avengers return to earth, the Guardians to space, and for 18-25 years (approximately the span of a full generation) life continues as normal. As life goes on, typical Avengers/Guardians life saving antics transpire, though gradually, small domestic conflicts (wars, conspiracy, political turmoil, famine, and natural disasters) also increasingly arise on earth and on other planets.

Finally, after a few years of witnessing these events and writing them off as typical human indiscretion, all the heroes who survived Infinity War concurrently realize that, though they beat Thanos, he was right.

Thanos’ motivation for eradicating half the population of the universe was to avoid the famine and natural depletion of resources that happened to his people. In attempts of avoiding the tragedy of The Snap ™, the heroes subjected the entire universe to the very demise that Thanos was trying to save them from. Every hero who was involved in the Inifinity War—depending on whether the stones were destroyed or hidden—now has to deal with the fact that they allowed this to happen, and are completely unable to help all the suffering civilians because, even though they are superheroes, no amount of super strength, spiderwebs, or vibranium can reverse the overpopulation of the planets or depletion of natural resources. All of the heroes now must make a choice whether to remain completely useless and watch, maybe even suffer themselves, or choose to find each of the stones, and do the exact thing they were trying to keep Thanos from doing.
