Summary: When Klein first meets Emlyn, one request sets off a series of events that cannot be changed. The seer isn’t sure he’d want to alter it even if he could turn back time.
(This is still in Chapter 1 but it’s a ways in. The case is not canon… Emlyn’s at Sherlock’s house. Klein is metaphorically saved by the bell when some jumpy man comes knocking. He barely escaped Emlyn’s long winded rambles about his dolls (maybe later in the relationship it’s fine but not now. It’s been… like less than a day since they met))
Internally on high alert, Klein opened the door without showing his wariness.
“You’re Sherlock Moriarty, correct?” the man interjected.
The seer blinked at the interruption but nodded. “Yes, I am.”
“And you have a strict confidentiality clause?” he frantically confirmed, glancing around.
“Yes,” Klein replied. “I have a frien—”
“Thank God,” the aristocrat cut him off again and barged past him into the living room. “My friend was just murdered, I think I’m being followed, and I can’t go to the police because I’m an unofficial beyonder. I need help.”
Klein shut the door and stepped through the opening to see Emlyn holding a teacup halfway to his mouth with wide eyes.
The potential client realized another person in the room and stiffened.
“Who’s this?” His voice shook.
“This is my assistant, Emlyn White,” Sherlock answered.
The transmigrator strode to the vampire, blocking the frazzled man’s view of the latter, and spoke over the sanguine’s confused sounds.
“Emlyn, help me with drinks,” he declared, grabbing his arm and pulling him up.
The red-eyed man still held the teacup, bewildered, as the detective skillfully moved them toward the kitchen.
“Take a seat. We’ll be with you in a moment,” Klein threw over his shoulder.
Managing to keep Emlyn’s surprise from the potential client, the seer kept him close and whispered, “If you play along and stay quiet, I’ll give you 10 soli.”
Emlyn automatically responded, “3 pounds.”
Klein barely caught himself from gaping and echoing the price out loud.
3 pounds?! 3 pounds?!! This man is trying to rob me in broad daylight!! Let me call the police! Let me call the police for swindling!!
“15 soli,” Sherlock hissed, barely stopping himself from gritting his teeth.
“2 pounds,” the haughty vampire bargained.
“18 soli,” the transmigrator threw back.
They walked into the kitchen.
Emlyn stayed firm. “2 pounds.”
Klein barely bit back his irritation.
I can’t lose like this. Do I actually need him? The only reason I made Emlyn my “assistant” was to ease the client’s mind, but I don’t even know if I’m going to take this case.
Klein stepped away from the potioneer to grab a glass. With his back toward Emlyn, he snuck a coin out from his pocket and flipped it.
The seer frowned. He flipped the coin again, revealing the same face.
It seemed that accepting the case and including Emlyn would yield positive results. While this divination wasn’t the best, and he didn’t know how the other would help, it gave him something to go on. Regardless, he needed more information.
Klein filled up his glass with water and slipped the metal back into his pocket. He returned to the pale figure, who had his arms crossed, with a calmer mind.
“1 pound,” Klein offered.
This investment better pay off.
They stayed in a silent deadlock for a moment.
The magician gestured to the door. “You’re always free to walk out.”
The vampire scowled and narrowed his red eyes. “Fine, 1 pound.”
Hopefully, that teaches you not to set such high prices against me.
The newly founded and fake “detective duo” returned to the drawing room, where they sat side-by-side on the couch. Klein didn’t trust the vampire to behave.
“Sorry for the wait,” Sherlock apologized. “What is your name?”
