Interactive Fiction Origins Tag Game
This is another tag game, create by my good friend @miznie ! If you haven't already, I highly advise you to read Fate of the Undead, for it is an amazing story, with, if I do say so myself, really good writing, that keeps you both engaged and entertained!
And also, thank you for tagging me darling! I just love these😁🖤🖤🖤
Answer for your first or favourite IF project.
In my case, believe it or not, it's the same if; The Dark Crown. Because the history behind it is that, technically (writingly) speaking, this one came before my two side projects, so yeah. I'll be answering for that one.
Why did you write your story as interactive fiction, compared to alternative formats? Ah, this brings back memories. But, to answer the question, the reason as to why is simple; I tried, and failed, to write a book with this theme and story and all that, but I've kept the idea, just in case I, one day, was going to do that. Fast forward to a good couple years later, and I was introduced to IFs, and so have thought that that idea, that whole world and setting and all, would be amazing if written like that, and not like the regular book. That's how The Dark Crown project began.
Where did the idea for your IF come from? From my mind🤓 No, but for real, it came from the aforementioned book idea, which I actually thought of back when I was still in high school. I was reading a lot of fantasy back then, and so naturally to my creative mind, that idea started to take shape. First the characters, then the story (vague story, mind you), and yeah, now we're here.
How did you come up with your story's name? I suck at naming things. Like, for real. If I ever name something successfully, that is just because I'm lucky like that. But, I digress. The title for The Dark Crown came from the story. It's a literal thing that's going to be in the story (shout out my boy Damien), so yeah, I just took at, looked at it, was like "Cool, this will sound good", and the rest is history.
Who was the first character you came up with? If I recall correctly, it was Damien, though it might have also been a character called Kael. Maybe they were created at the same time, I'm not sure, but knowing myself, I think it was Damien.
What was your biggest challenge early on, and how did you overcome it? Hmm... Well, I think that my biggest challenge was the fact that I didn't know anything about coding. I did write occasionally, and that wasn't anything new to me, aside from the format, but coding was completely new, and I always thought that coding was tough as hell to learn. Turned out I was wrong, as long as you take baby steps in learning it, the way I did. First with CSide, and then Twine, and then even more learning of JavaScript, so yeah, I overcame it by taking one step at a time.
Were there any stories that inspired you to start writing yours? I mentioned this to one of my best friends, @childrenofcain-if, but it was actually his story that made me pause, and really give this all a try. The way he wrote "The Ballad of the Young Gods" was so good, and I wanted to create a work that could rival his one day, not in any competition sort of way, but in greatness. I mean, I'll continue glazing his writing for it is just insanely good, and so I wanted to create a story just as good, and since I liked how you can branch and not just follow one set path, yeah, that also made me want to create something like that as well.
Has your IF gone through any major storyline/plot changes you first thought of it? Oh, absolutely! When the idea for the book came to mind, Kael was actually the "MC" in question here, and though he still is a character in The Dark Crown now, the plot in general changed. A whole bunch of times, and not only that, but also many side plots emerged as well, as the story, and new characters, were added. But, what remained the same is that fantasy aspect, the fantasy genre of old. (Amy mentioned LOTR and yeah, same here just on a much bigger scale, in terms of powers and all that).
A big thank you to Amy once again for tagging me🖤 For my tags, I'll start of, as usual, with my darling wife @darkfictionjude, followed by my boy @childrenofcain-if. Then, I shall sprinkle in @vamporg, @altaiirif, @icaroif, @thelostbride-if, @kindlingif, @partyof4game, @nonameonlyflowers aaaaand @13leaguestories. I want to tag a bunch more, but people won't have anyone else left to tag, and so I'll restrain myself with only this small amount of my friends (not exactly moots with @13leaguestories but I just love Superstition series and so naturally I have to put a few of my idols here; it's only right)😭
But, if anyone else wishes to join, feel free!
