About Warlock (1959), director Edward Dmytryk "later denied that the gay subtext was intentional". Maybe what he meant was that the gay subtext was very much text. How else to explain the ending, with a crying Henry Fonda immolating his loyal companion after a frenzied speech? In a rare instance, Anthony Quinn plays against type, imbuing his character with enough ambiguity to feed the jilted lover's angle.

Malasana (the garland pose) "enhances hip flexibility, strengthens the lower body, and improves digestion."
An easy pose for Willem Dafoe, a lifelong practitioner of ashtanga yoga.
As striking as his turn in Mauvais Sang, Denis Lavant's haunting performance in the video for Rabbit in your headlights is what makes it unforgettable. A "prime example of sustaining a sense of mounting dread and delivering an odd yet thrilling payoff", according to Rolling Stone.
There is a strong tonal kinship between this video and Under the skin, the movie director Jonathan Glazer made 15 years later.

Denis Lavant worked with choreographer Christine Burgos to "structure" this scene. It was so taxing that he said to director Leos Carax that he could only do five takes, finally he did seven. In one take, Denis Lavant did a somersault and subsequently had to run faster to keep up with the cars used for the travelling. Carax loved this impromptu rupture of the rhythm and used it in the movie.
This memorable sequence made Denis Lavant a household name in French cinema. He reminisces about it in this interview.
Happy Bloomsday.

"Preparing [for the role of Nikki] was really fun. We got to watch a lot of fun movies, and kind of pick and choose, like a puzzle, what we wanted in the film. Moments that we took inspiration from, and made them our own." — Inde Navarrette for Fandango "We watched Get Out, and focused on a lot of the moments where characters are showing an emotion underneath but saying something completely different [on the surface], and how horrific that is. There's a scene where [Nikki] is saying, "no", and there is a [similar] scene in Get Out [which we took inspiration from]." — Inde Navarrette for A Shot Magazine Obsession (2026) Dir. Curry Barker Get Out (2017) Dir. Jordan Peele
Betty Gabriel's performance is both understated and outstanding in Get Out. Quite the blueprint for this kind of conflicted emotion.

The main takeaway from Walter Hill's "Streets of fire" is that Willem Dafoe starring in "Shadow of the vampire" was foretold.

Cloître de Saint-Sauveur (Aix Cathedral cloister) in Aix-en-Provence, France. It is a serene Romanesque cloister dating back to the 12th century.
A remarkable detail from the late-12th-century Romanesque cloister of Saint-Sauveur Cathedral in Aix-en-Provence, France. This twisted corner support turns solid stone into something almost fluid, showing how Romanesque carving could be both structural and deeply expressive.
