IB Past Papers

Welcome! This page is designated to sharing past papers for a variety of IB subjects. If a subject you take doesn't yet have past papers here, send a request in asks or DMs.

Each post will be clearly tagged with the subject the paper is relevant to. If a paper applies to both HL and SL, it will be tagged as both. Additionally, papers will either be tagged as "Mark Scheme Available" or "Mark Scheme Unavailable". Available mark schemes will be shared as a reblog of the paper.

I may also occasionally share study/assessment tips, which will be tagged as “study advice”

With summative orals VERY close, here are some useful ways to format your oral.

Describing the image Broad imagery - start by simply stating what the image is of, and the theme (written on the image). Include a broad cultural link, such as "this is a cultural celebration/food/etc to [country]"

What is in the image? What is in the foreground? (People, animals, food, etc) What is in the backgrounds? (buildings, etc). This is a good time to start applying other tenses (eg; "It looks like these children have been at school). If you haven't already, assume the location and provide a cultural link by discussing how this is different to where you live (eg; "I believe this school is in Colombia, as it is quite early and the students are already going home, which is very different from where I live.")

People Describe the general people. Who are they? What are they doing? This can also be used to link to culture or weather (eg; "They are wearing... which is cultural to..." or "Many people, such as the woman in the middle, are wearing warm clothes, so I believe it is winter").

People (specific) Pick out a couple particularly interesting person/few people from the image. Discuss aspects such as how they seem to be feeling. Again, this can link to cultural aspects (eg; they look very happy, possibly because in [country], [event] is a celebration). You may also want to point out who you think particular people are (eg; "I believe the person in the picture is a/the ___, because they are ___")

For SL, follow instructions of exam.

For HL, answer ONE question from section A and TWO questions from DIFFERENT optional themes of Section B. (2 hours 30 minutes)

1. Pick your design opportunity Pick it, and pick it well! Nothing blows more than realising your design opportunity is kinda trash. Importantly, make sure you pick something that you are passionate about, and that could be solved in a variety of ways. You don't want something with only one possible solution, otherwise it won't make for a good IA.

2. Take the time to create a scaffold Personally, I switched to writing my IA in PowerPoint instead of Word and I CANNOT recommend it enough. Open a PowerPoint document and create a scaffold. One of the best parts about doing it in PowerPoint is that you can quickly double-click anywhere on any page and add notes about ideas you had (I also recommend using that like script feature, where the text isn't on the slide). I very highly recommend using this template, though you don't have to follow it exactly:

3. Initial Sketches Create your initial sketches. Don't get fancy with them because you actually want them to be a little trash. The more downsides your initial concepts have, the more improvements you can discuss.

4. Chunk it out The DT IA is very conveniently broken into sections. Your teacher may set soft deadlines for each criterion; if they don't, set some for yourself and make yourself finish each one by a deadline. (Personally, I like to set pre-deadlines about a week prior, so instead of cramming the day before I cram a week before) Despite what you may or may not be able to do in other subjects, this is NOT something you can cram the day before. Remember that it is worth 40% of your final grade!
