One year ago I began writing a record in Nashville Tennessee. I had started a pen pal correspondence with songwriter friend Sam Smithwick, with whom I greatly admired and shared the stage with on occasion, in Alabama and Georgia, and other southern states in America when both of us were singing rock n roll songs and wandering the country with our bands. The idea was to exchange songs and ideas, not to co write, but rather to stimulate and encourage songs to get finished. It served to become the nucleus for the songs that would follow. I began to write and be inspired by personal stories, commentary, and articles (op-eds) in the newspapers, and the stories and heartfelt anxiety I read in turn helped form songs. My subject matter had started with the Standing rock stories I would read, from people living and affected first hand in North Dakota, who were protesting the pipeline. Shortly afterwards I went to the Women’s march in Nashville, and was further inspired to write and educate myself on women issues including the Women’s conference for rights in the mid 70s. Gloria Steinem became a hero to me. Personal stories became a weekly part of my life, the constant marches, the fights for dreamers, the hope of candidates in Virginia inspired and running for office, to families in Syria living the horror of war, and the escalating world migration issues. All in all pretty weighty  topics but something I felt as a songwriter I wanted to say. My hope is that teachers and educators will become the heroes to the next generation, because with a positive mentor all things in life are possible. Thanks. Ian Webber 2018
