king of everything

She spent the last few hours turning the stupid ring around her fingers and it’s… It’s hard. It hurts. Not because Johnathan is an ass, she knew that. Not because her grandmother is a bitch, she knew that. But because her mother never said anything, she just said there, staring at her lap like always.

Lily misses her, misses the person her mother used to be before she turned into her grandma’s puppet.

She remembers how her mother used to be the most amazing mom ever. There’s a wonderful moment that is burned into her mind.

It was the day of her first skating competition. Lily had been taking lessons for about three months now and her coach had offered her the chance to try to win a price. She had loved the idea and only started to train harder, excited for the day to come.

And now she was standing backstage, twirling on her tiptoes, the light blue dress flaring out around her tiny body.  She felt like a princess.

“Lily get your skates on.” He coach called from where she was trying to calm down another girl. Lily picked up the white skates, quickly tying up the laces around her ankles, making sure they fit perfectly. She wanted to do well. This was her first try. She loved the skating, she was good at it and she was going to prove it. Her mom was somewhere out there in the stands, happy and excited for her baby girl and Lily was going to make her proud.

“Lily Scott. You’re up next. Please get ready.” The voice sounded tinny through the speaker system but was enough to get her heart racing. This was it. Now or never.

She stepped up to the edge of the ice. The girl who was out there currently had just stumbled, causing the crowd to groan. Lily sighed. She couldn’t let that influence her. She had to concentrate.

Somehow she wasn’t sure whether it was seconds or hours, but the girl bowed, the judges held up their scores and the girl came off the ice. She brushed past Lily and threw herself into the arms of her coach. Lily sighed, took a deep breath and stepped out onto the ice.

She skated a quick round around the rink, amazed by the amount of people before standing in the middle and pulling her arms up above her head, ready for her starting pose. The first notes of her song sounded through the now quiet arena. Show Time.

By the time she was done with her routine, her breathing was ragged and she was shaking with excitement. She hadn’t fallen down, hadn’t stumbled once. It had been perfect.

The judges were holding up the points and a huge smile appeared on her face. She had done good, no very, very good.

She caught her mom’s gaze in the audience. She was beaming down at her daughter and yelling loudly. Lily bowed slowly, skating onto the side of the rink. She had been the last contestant and it only took seconds for the others to appear.

By the time she got off the ice, the shining gold trophy clutched in her hand, her mom basically threw herself at her. She picked the little girl up, spinning her around.

“You did amazing.” She told her. “Really, really wonderful and gorgeous. I love you baby girl."
