I have returned with yet another gouache painting. I made this one in winter as one can see, and right now I would very much prefer this weather over the heat we are experiencing at the moment.
A Little something I did with acrylic paint:
Acne Treatment as Schizophrenia prevention?
You might ask yourself: what, no way?! But there is apparently some research that suggests that the treatment with the antibiotic doxycycline is linked to a 30% lower risk to develop Schizophrenia! So the researchers suggest it as a possible prevention method for teens after having attended psychiatric interventions, which poses them at higher likelihood to being diagnosed with psychiatric disorder.
Of course those findings can’t prove a causal relationship so there is future research needed to look into the details of this relationship.
An antibiotic commonly prescribed for acne management has been linked to a reduced chance of developing schizophrenia.

Inspired by this picture I took when I was on a walk:

Finished the drawing, Adam Schürk everyone:
I am always so afraid of drawing the second eye because this is usually the part where I mess up.
Does everybody have a preferred eye to start a drawing or is that just me?
Did some doodles with left over paint:
I made another one
I don't wanna swim the ocean
I don't wanna fight the tide
I don't wanna swim forever
When it's cold, I'd like to die

I tried another gouache tutorial from Jess Chung but it turned out all wrong.
I somehow couldn’t get a nice purple color? I was mixing blue, red and white and it just turned into grey/brown? I generally struggle with mixing colors because the paint just gets stuck on the paintbrush.
Well here is the finished thing:
And also what do you guys do with your left over paint? Feels like it would be a waste to just get rid of it…
Like many I’m not satisfied with the ending but I still love these characters! So enjoy this little sketch of Will Byers:
Still trying to figure out Gouache so I followed a tutorial by @Jess Chung on YouTube and it turned out alright?
I still struggle most with getting the right consistency of the paint and with mixing it properly.
Also got lazy in the end and stopped adding layers of grass and flowers.
Suicide During Wartime
Sooo, I was reading this book called The Anxious Generation written by Jonathan Haidt where he mentioned Durkheim's work on Suicide from 1897.
Basically Durkheim was a French sociologist and he proposed that suicide is related to the degree of social integration and moral regulation and therefore a social phenomenon.
One of his findings that made me wonder was that suicide rates are higher in times of peace than in times of war due to increased social integration during wartime. So I looked up if there are any recent studies repeating this finding.
There is one study that looked at the Sri Lankan Civil war (1983-2009) and found a decline of 43-52% during the civil war (doi:Â 10.1371/journal.pone.0240487).
Another study found a decrease of suicide rates among Australians during WWII but an elevation of suicide during the Vietnam War, which actually supports the "social integration" hypotheses, because the period of the Vietnam War was marked by extreme shifts and division in societies around the world. (https://doi.org/10.1177/103985621773474)
There are also studies that report increased suicide rates during the Balkan Wars especially among younger people.(https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/13811110600582406?needAccess=true, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0188-4409(02)00364-8) With another study replicating the finding that decreased total population suicide rates might hide an increase in suicide among young men and might misrepresent the overall declining trend of suicide. (https://doi.org/10.1186/1471-2458-6-167)
So overall I think that the general idea that suicide rates decrease during inter-state wartime seems plausible, when taking into account the increased social integration that happens when your country is at war with another (common enemy and all that). This is also why I think it's logical that during a proxy war this effect is not observed since proxy wars usually devide a country into those against and those in favor of it.
But just as more recent studies have showed you probably can't reach the same conclusions for every group in a population because men and women of different ages face different challanges and opportunities during war so it's reasonable to assume that this is reflected in suicide rates.
(Disclaimer: I did not read most of the studies fully because I don't have access and I am not a scientist, so if I have provided wrong or misleading information, please let me know!)
(I also didn’t take a look at the war in Ukraine but I cant imagine the findings being replicated there, since you read so much about the mental health crisis in Ukraine following the war and increased suicide?)
Even though I don’t feel like it will be one, I wish everyone a happy New Year!
(Almost missed it because I was working on this painting using this tutorial https://pin.it/2kS7anPdg)
