For my beloved #UfYH
This SORT of fits the âShit I Wish I Had Knownâ theme, but really this here is just my little contribution to the glorious Unfuck Your Habitat queen-lady.
I worked for a carpet & upholstery cleaning company for 5 years. This is the best basic stain removal/spill cleanup method for anything that is carpet or fabric, short of hiring a professional.
First, get yourself some cheap white terry towels or washcloths. I get mine in a bundle of 10 for $1 at the local dollar store. Terry is the best texture for stain removal (being only mildly abrasive, and absorbent) and you want white so that youâre not transferring dyes, & you can see whatâs coming off.
When you spill something or someone pees, or Whatever happens, itâs best to get to it right away! Thatâs obvious, right? Ok, here we go:
1) Blot up as much excess as humanly possible.
2) Dampen the rag (hopefully a new one but work with what you have) and BLOT, donât rub, at the stain. Very very gentle rubbing is ok for carpet, not for upholstery generally. Weâre trying to not spread the Whatever or damage anything here.
3) Apply your chosen mild solvent to the rag, NOT the stain, and blot blot blot.
4) Go back over it with just the damp rag again. Come on, donât skip this step.
4) Repeat 3&4 as needed.
5) Follow up with the dry rag again!
Now! It is important to note that urine generally discolors things, so youâre not working with a stain usually, so much as discoloration. Same for anything with hardcore dye (Gods Blast Ye, Robitussin) or tannins (wine, coffee, etc). But these are not without hope! Just get to them ASAP. If you have a Serious Amount of Urine (as in, for years), & padding under your carpet, the smell wonât truly go away without new padding. Iâm sorry. That crap acts like a sponge (a sponge with a carpet on top) and it canât really be cleaned. =(
Also! For the love of all things Good, Pure, and Unfucked PLEASE do not ever use the devilâs powder, AKA Carpet Fresh. All it does is form a sticky residue which attracts soil. It takes several extractions with a truck-mounted steam unit to TRULY remove it. Same with Resolve and most other cleaners; they donât get rinsed properly and they attract more soil. The best thing in your house for carpet & upholstery spotting is diluted dish detergent. I swear.
And lastly! Water rings are ridiculous but true; water can stain a LOT of things. This is because the item is drying unevenly, and it generally happens on thinner fabrics or anything with a linen or silk content. So your best bet is to dampen a bit beyond the stain and then brush it lightly in an outward motion, trying to go lighter as you go outwards in a spiral/fan motion. Then aim a fan at that bad boy to make it dry faster & more evenly, sit down, and rest!
Bonus tip thing: Goo Gone is pretty much just oil (baby, mineral, whatever) BUT that nice orange color can stain, so use the baby oil instead if youâre removing wax and such.
