In my communications textbook I read that part of our views of ourselves are based on evaluations from others in our lives. "Everyone's self-concept is to some degree a reflected appraisal (a mirroring of the judgements of those around a person)...Your self concept can be seen, at least in part, as a reflection of the messages you've received throughout your life." As I was reading this chapter a few days ago, I realized that my textbook was right (I say was and not is because I want to change that). I am eighteen years old, and I am just realizing that I should NOT be basing my self-happiness and satisfaction by the way others view me. Also, I should not be comparing myself to others, because I am myself, and they are themselves. We also "form our self-image by the process of social comparison: evaluating ourselves in terms of how we compare with others." Growing up I would do my best to satisfy others wants for me before my own, and I would compare myself to those above me in order to try and become more "accepted" by people. I'm not saying this to try and make you feel bad for me, but to simply say that you should try and love yourself the way you are. I want to prevent others from possibly experiencing the years of self-hatred I put myself through. I'm learning to love myself the way I am, and nothing should change that. These past few months in college I've been so much happier than I've ever been because I'm allowing myself to like myself. I am finally being myself and expressing myself freely. I don't need to be basing my self-satisfaction on others' acceptance or tolerance of me. I don't need to change the way I dress, the way I do my hair, the people I love, my interests and hobbies, my views, etc. for other people. Sometimes I feel sad realizing that I can't always be accepted by everyone, but I would much rather live an open and happy (and sometimes sad) life, instead of one where I am living a lie and am sad and conform for others. I love myself the way I am; and that's all that matters. And I hope you all love yourselves the way you are too. Oh, & I wanted an excuse to post a picture & say I dyed my hair in a rainbow. 🖍📙📒🍃🖌🔮💕 #loveyourself
