Introductions

Hello, this is Scarfy! A week or so back I announced that this blog was open, but in hindsight that was a bit premature. After all, I couldn’t really fairly call myself a multimuse when I only had a single muse. I have since rectified this, and my Muses page now has five complete writeups for your perusal. Really long writeups. I honestly went too far. And while I’d still love it if y’all gave them a read, allow me to offer something a bit more reasonable. As I declare the blog officially open for real this time, here are some brief summaries of my five currently available muses ^^/

Oh, I should probably elaborate on what I'm talking about since Arc 2 of MagiReco is only available through fan TLs and isn't widely known.

For starters, attention is drawn to how despite existing throughout history, magical girls have always had a tendency to never speak of or reveal themselves even without external reasons to do so. Likewise, the unusual amount of adolescent girls that die and go missing almost never seem to be properly acknowledged.

Tasuke: I started believing in Magical Girls after I found out Nayuta had become one, and from the point I started investigating, I had a question on my mind. Tasuke: It was the fact that Magical Girls must have existed throughout the whole of human history, without being known to the public conscience. Tasuke: Not only did they protect us from Witches, they also helped evolve humanity and were substantial influences to history, and yet they were somehow relegated only to the shadows. Tasuke: The discrepancy between these accounts had me hooked. Tasuke: I traveled abroad, looking for traces of Magical Girls, looking for women who left an impact on history, and I came up with the hypothesis that Magical Girls themselves have had different names depending on the era and culture they were in. Tasuke: Expressions that exaggerate the facts, and describe fantasies as though they were facts, are apparent in literature. Tasuke: It’s a common theory that those in power came up with these fantasies to show their authority, and that these live on as myths and hero stories. Tasuke: Based on the story that there were Magical Girls in ancient times that Kyubey told Nayuta, it doesn’t seem strange that Magical Girls were at the core of those myths and hero stories. Tasuke: However, no matter how far back you go, no matter how much you reexamine it, what is written about in the literature of myths and heroes never differs from the realm of dreams and visions. Tasuke: Even though there should be Magical Girls in any era, just like Nayuta or Touka, there was never any universal recognition, and their names are left only in legends. Tasuke: Then what happens to the ordinary Magical Girls who don’t go on to become legends… Tasuke: They don’t talk about them defeating Witches, they don’t talk about their Wish, they just act like they’re preprogrammed to hide their identity. Tasuke: There was a group of Magical Girls in Kamihama City a couple of years back that supported that idea particularly well. Tasuke: At the time, they were divided into east and west, and they shed their blood fighting over Witches Tasuke: But they didn’t want to tell anyone about their suffering, and they kept about their daily lives, pretending to be okay. Tasuke: That sense of incongruity did not change when I visited Futatsugi City. Tasuke: And that sense of incongruity only got more complicated as I saw Magical Girls who seemingly didn’t complain about their plight nor the state of the town. Tasuke: It was strange that we never took issue with the materials and Magical Girls that remained in history. Tasuke: The fighting between Magical Girls was causing unnatural death, but why was it always left as a natural event with no concern paid?

And then local scholar of magical girls putting together a book about them to maybe publicize them falls mysteriously (?) ill while doing so, and shortly afterward bears witness to the efforts of a certain group of magical girls trying to publicize themselves end in tragedy. And he has this theory.

Tasuke gives a long fun theory. Mahou shoujo become witches to generate energy that maintains the universe. Kyubey makes contracts with girls to collect said energy. Asahi describes this idea as being food for the universe. Tasuke continues, saying just as the human body is made up of cells, you could think of it as them being a part of the universe. And among those people, mahou shoujo have an important role in creating energy the universe needs, just like the importance of mitochondria in cells. Asahi then asks if they're more like creators of food rather than the food itself. Tasuke then asks well, even though mahou shoujo are essential, doesn't witching out and losing that production sound closer to a disease that makes the universe miss out? Sasha has heard of diseases that weaken mitochondria into losing their function. But if that's true, then saving mahou shoujo would be what? Tasuke continues, saying that it's like rebelling against the universe, making them what is essentially "cancer" to the universe. Lavi asks if this means them turning into myths and legends throughout history is because they're not good for the universe. Tasuke says that no matter what efforts have been made to publicize them in the past, a mysterious force, like a trick played by the gods, seems to always distort things. If the universe itself has a so-called immune system or self-purifying system, then they are unknowingly being attacked by the universe. The result is, he believes, these unnatural situations where incidents occur affecting mahou shoujo in silence, in which they feel like they're being targeted by something unseen.

So there's this idea that the will of the universe itself works to stop the existence of magical girls from being revealed, in order to ensure its own survival, an immune system eliminating mitochondria (magical girls) that deviate from what they should be doing and threaten overall functioning.

Now is this the case? Is the universe itself acting as a subtle compulsive force to mythologize magical girls, incline them towards virtually never confiding in regular people, and insidiously thwarting any efforts for magical girls to reveal their existence with unfortunate 'accidents' and unexplainable 'events'?

No one knows, it's left completely ambiguous all the way to the end of Magia Record, in the end the point is that the girls that most believe in it let that belief make them nihilists who think they can't defy fate no matter what and become antagonists and they shouldn't have done that. Maybe it's actually the Incubators, maybe it's a self-fulfilling prophecy that magical girls inadvertently make more real by believing in it, maybe it really is a whole lot of coincidences.

Hey hi hello I'm still alive and will be returning to activity on Tumblr shortly but instead of making a proper post announcing this (I will be) seeing this talk about the universe and Incubators and whatnot on my dash has made me want to reshare slightly edited some words I said way back when

Now to be clear, the Will of the Universe doesn't exist as an answer for why the magical girl system never goes public, and it's never confirmed for that very reason. It's a /possibility/, sure, but its narrative purpose is to be doomerism.

Indeed, the Will of the Universe almost certainly isn't real, but even if it is, it's believing too hard in it that gives it power over you. Folklore of Zero (the group of magical girls that try to reveal the Puella Magi system to the public and it all goes horribly wrong) is narratively in the wrong for giving too much credence to the Will of the Universe and letting it make them fatalists that think burning everything to the ground is the only solution left to them. The system always functions to misdirect the grievances of those suffering under it to something external. Folklore of Zero can perhaps conceive of a world in which the Incubators are stopped, because they're something obvious and visible. But direct their fears to something abstract, an enemy that can't be defeated, not a white cat that can pretend to hear you out but the overwhelming suffocating weight of something that can crush you without even being aware of you, that won't even take advantage of your concerns but can't even begin to hear you, then the system is left free to do its thing.

But then, who can blame teenage girls living in fucking Puella Magi Madoka Magica for coming to the conclusion the universe is out to get them?

She's going to be actively doing things pretty soon, so here's a look at Norie's design as a magical girl as rendered in Koikatsu (full credit to @ofsofterworlds for doing the outfit itself I only described all of the conceptual stuff to her)

Her general concept is a marine hunter with a netting and a harpoon, impaling and holding fast with barbs and reeling back in, and with a particular theme of riptides, of the lashing out of an angry stormy ocean, but so too a quieter understated beauty of the ocean, like coral covering a shipwreck

Truth be told, Norie rarely if ever thinks about death. She is after all just 13 years old, not at all inclined to think of her mortality or those of her peers or the adults in her life. She's never firsthand seen anyone die. And while she may be a magical girl, she's also only been so around a year, and her more experienced cousin Mia has yet to even learn the truth about Witches or even just how fatal encounters with them can be, much less Norie herself.

If she did witness a magical girl dying, whether against another magical girl or a Witch, she would definitely be shaken as hell and the image of herself dying similarly would replay in her head over and over. It'd give her nightmares and recur in her thoughts when she has trouble sleeping. But death would still be profoundly abstract for her, detached from her own experience so thoroughly, that it would also have a certain unreal quality. And because she's stubborn, of the belief that she has to persevere and be a proper student and magical girl alike, despite her anxiety she would resolve herself and continue to patrol the next day.

Over time however, she'd be able to convince herself that any other magical girls that die just didn't try hard enough or otherwise brought it upon themselves. Something similar would never happen to her or her cousin. After all, her Witch hunts thus far hadn't gotten overly dangerous for her, and she was always able to resolve territorial disputes without a fight through her magic. She'd stop lingering on the memory of a magical girl dying and move on without it being a lasting trauma.

And when it comes to the true nature of Soul Gems… she would be a rather rare case of being perfectly happy with it. She simply doesn't very much like her body, has always felt a certain degree of detachment and disconnection from it, becomes dysphoric whenever her attention is drawn to how it falls short from what she'd like it to be, what she feels it always should have been. So the notion of her truest self, her essence, no longer residing within her body but inside of a beautiful sparkling gem that as well embodies that she really is a girl, that she is indisputably a magical girl, is one that honestly delights her. She doesn't care that her body is now just a remote controlled vessel, a corpse if her Soul Gem is ever too far from it. She respects and understands the practical necessity and wouldn't even think of herself as anything like a zombie or similar, regard her body as dead. It doesn't provoke thoughts about her own mortality at all. If anything, it's testament that her life isn't bound by the body she wishes she wasn't born with.

So yeah, Norie practically never thinks about death. Her only experience with it would be the passing of great grandparents and others of their generation, perhaps at 13 even one of her grandparents, but such is inevitability for a child and just as with a majority, left no lasting impact on her. At most, she has perhaps if prompted by seeing a funeral or hearing about a figure's death on the news or something, briefly thought about her death in an abstract eventual sense… and worried that she might be buried as, eulogized as… well, you can figure it out, right?

But even then, she'll dismiss that thought.

It won't come to that.

Her hard work will pay off.

It has to.

The Rumor Come Out: Does Sanae Kaname Is Gay?

“WHAT THE FUCK?! WHO THE FUCKING HELL IS SPREADING RUMORS LIKE THAT ABOUT ME- ACTUALLY WAIT WHY THE FUCK ARE THERE LIKE ANY FUCKING RUMORS AT ALL ABOUT ME?! I’M A FUCKING GODDESS NOT A FUCKING URBAN LEGEND! THIS ISN’T RELATED TO THOSE ‘UWASA’ THINGS IN THAT ONE SPECIAL RECORD IS IT?! I DON’T HAVE FUCKING ANYTHING TO DO WITH THAT THE LAW OF CYCLES DOESN’T EVEN GO THERE! I SWEAR TO THE FUCKING GODDESS WHEN I FIND THIS MOTHERFUCKER, I’M GONNA LIKE… DUNK ‘EM IN A RIVER!”

Several more threats (and a lot more swears) that weren’t actually threatening ensued, but after sufficiently ranting about the very idea of there being rumors about her, the goddess eventually remembered what the specific rumor she’d been told was.

“O-Okay, I don’t fucking know what that motherfucking rumor starting bitch thinks they like, know about me and stuff, but I’m gonna set the record or whatevs, ‘kay? For starters, that’s totes wrong grammar, you don’t use ‘does’ like that, so like this motherfucker is a total dumbass. So of course they’re hella wrong! I, Sanae Kaname, am like seriously straight as fuck! N-Not that there’s anything wrong with being gay, but I only like girls, so there!”

And then a single moment’s pause, that regardless seemed an eternity.

“W-Wait, d-doesn’t that kinda not work the same the way I am now?! Cause like, I was seriously only into girls when I was a guy in my past life and that made me straight and stuff, but now it’s like… I mean, I am still kind of a guy on the inside! But I don’t always completely feel like a guy, and it feels kinda bad to be in masc shift too long or get called ‘he’ and ‘him’ without a bit of alternating and… I guess I do at least sometimes kinda sorta consider myself a girl.”
