Whether you’re cruising the Jersey Shore, exploring inland lakes, or heading offshore, being prepared is essential for a smooth and worry-free trip. Understanding what safety equipment is required, the state’s boating laws, and smart practices can help you avoid risks and make every outing enjoyable.

1. Required Safety Equipment for New Jersey Waters

New Jersey law mandates that recreational vessels carry U.S. Coast Guard–approved gear. Depending on your boat’s size and type, this may include:

Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): One wearable Type I, II, III, or V life jacket per person, plus a Type IV throwable device for boats longer than 16 feet.

Fire Extinguishers: Required on boats with enclosed fuel or engine compartments.

Visual Distress Signals (Flares/Lights): Required for coastal or open water use, day and night.

Sound Signaling Devices: Whistle, horn, or bell for signaling in distress or low visibility.

Navigation Lights: Must be functional and used between sunset and sunrise or in limited visibility.

2. Know the Rules: Education, Age, and Legal Requirements

New Jersey imposes several legal requirements to promote safe boating:

Boating Safety Education: Anyone aged 16 or older operating a power vessel or PWC must complete a state-approved safety course unless exempted or possessing an out-of-state certificate.

License for Non-Tidal Waters: A boat license is required for non-tidal waters, in addition to the safety certificate. Certain low-powered or non-motorized vessels may be exempt. 

Minimum Age Restrictions:

Individuals 13 years and older may operate electric trolling motors or small vessels under certain conditions.

16+ is required for operating all other powerboats and PWCs. 

3. Smart Safety Habits to Follow Every Time

You also need to understand the basic boat maintenance checklist to have a healthy safety habit before you get into the water.

Always Wear Your Life Jacket: Especially critical in cold water; NJ requires PFD use for vessels under 26 feet between November 1 and May 1.

Stay Weather-Wise: Check marine forecasts, wind, and tide conditions before heading out, and be prepared to return if the weather turns.

Carry Emergency Gear: Bring a first-aid kit, throwable flotation, and visual distress signals for quick response.
