There was no way he could have slipped a card in anyway, she had kept her eyes on him the entire time. However, her own self-reassurance came and went quickly as her fingers felt firm paper in the back of her jeans.

Very slowly, Wendy pulled out a card from her jeans pockets. Not trusting her own voice in the moment, she held the card high to show that it was, indeed, a Queen of Hearts.

The crowd ooh’d and ahhh’d, dispersing now that the show was over. Bill flashed Wendy a giant grin and slipped over to her, the kind of cocky self-assurance the demon usually displayed now translated through a human body.

But it was his voice, stripped of disguise and glamour, that confirmed her suspicion.

“Not long enough, Bill,” she bit back, scowling as she held the card out for him to take. Her shoulders tensed, and her hand gripped the straps of her backpack tighter. “How did you come back? Is this your second try at taking over the world or something?”

He stood up to stretch. Bill was still clamoring for control of his body, trying to worm his way past Amit’s defenses. He scrubbed at the itchy, crawling sensation in his arms. Not yet. Damn it Bill, not yet...

At least the hunger wasn’t a lie. He really was cold. And hungry. What hurt was knowing that the reason Bill had brought him here, and looking right into Mabel’s eyes, was that she struck him as the kind of girl who would invite him in without hesitation. That she would feed him. Make sure he was warm. Probably hide him from her own parents and insist he stay, who knew. He didn’t know what Bill wanted with this girl. But whatever it was, it made Amit uneasy.

                “Boy, are you lucky my brother’s not home. He would’ve slammed the door right in your face if he saw you outside. He’s kind’a paranoid and has a thing against strangers.” She said, matter-of-factly, with a flourish of her hand. Not that that was out of the ordinary. They’d just come out of an oddpocalypse!  But they weren’t as shaken in Piedmont as they were in Gravity Falls. In fact, home felt a little too normal nowadays. 

                She lead him at the table in the kitchen, completely oblivious that she’s been holding his hand all the while until she let go of it. “Whoops! It seems we’ve been holding hands for quite some time. Such… heh… such cold fingers…” She chuckled nervously and promptly turned her back on him. His cold fingers still lingered on her skin. She brushed a warm thumb across the cold marks he left then grabbed a chair from the table and placed it at the counter. She climbed up on it and opened the cupboard above. It was filled with sweets, chips and other junk food snacks, but she pushed them all aside to get to the box of chocolate chip cookies that was in the far back “You’re not from around here, are ya? Are you lost, or something? I nearly got lost once, but that was in San Francisco. I met a few homeless guys there. They chased my brother and I with broken bottles, but we’re all friends now.” She continued to babble as she jumped down from the chair and made her way towards him. 

“Your brother, huh.” Amit blinked at her comment about his hands, rubbing at his own fingers to warm them. “Wow, they really are cold. Sorry about that. No, I’m...I’m not from around here at all.” 

A pause. “Wait, you got chased by a bunch of homeless people? Jeez, that must have been scary.” He managed a smile and took only a few of the offered cookies. “Thanks. Mabel. Nice to meet you.”

Classes for today were cancelled, much to Wendy’s delight. It was the last class she would have had anyway, which meant she had an extra Friday all to herself. Normally, she would have gotten her stuff ready to drive back home to Gravity Falls, but with the extra time, she decided to treat herself.

There was a small shopping district near campus, which drew students and tourists alike. A small open plaza was more often than not populated by a busker of some kind, causing small crowds to group around the performer.

Today was no different. As Wendy walked by, people started to clap, applauding the performer after completing a routine. “And now for my next trick!” she heard the performer say, and curious, Wendy glanced over.

Her eyes widened in surprise and her foot caught a rock.

Wendy managed to catch herself quickly after some stumbling. But even after rubbing her eyes, she still couldn’t believe what she saw.

The street performer was wore a bright yellow vest over a white shirt, with black slacks and a black bow tie. Right in the center of his top hat was a triangular charm, with a single eye in the middle. Wendy swallowed. This had to be a coincidence.

But if Bill came back and somehow got a body, what was he doing as a street magician? Wendy watched as he did more tricks, going from cards to scarves to coins. At one point he even did something with fire that she was positive wasn’t just slight of hand. She had to stay and see what he was up to.

The girl shrugged sheepishly. “N-no. I have no idea. I put it in my bag like you said…”

Amit glanced up to make sure the waitress wasn’t heading their way to take their order. At this point, though, everyone seemed content to directly ignore them. He took a deep breath. “Something’s wrong. With both of us. When we made our deal, he was dying. He couldn’t…force me out of my body. And he couldn’t leave it, either. It’s been the two of us in the same body for five years straight.”

He fingered the cuff of his sleeve. “These have been here since summer of last year. I…remember things. But they’re not from me. They’re from him. It’s how I knew about you. About how you saved Gravity Falls. And Bill, he….”

Amit looked down, stared into his coffee. He didn’t deserve to look Dipper in the face, not after all this. “I don’t know what I’ve gotten into. Neither does he. I would have tried to contact your great-uncle, but… to be honest I think he would have just walked out the door by now. And I don’t blame him.”
