M O N T Y cracked his overworked fingers, rolling his neck back and forth. the desk chair in his room had practically molded to his body in the past FORTY-EIGHT hours he’d spent sitting there. he’d been working on an assignment for one of his intelligence classes, and before he knew it he was so sucked into the work that he could barely remember the original prompt. his eyes stung, he knew they were probably bloodshot and defined with dark circles. that wasn’t uncommon. monty had the horrible habit of forgetting to eat, shower, or even drink water. his stomach groaned, realizing that monty had forgotten to eat his three meals of the day. he took the break in his schedule to robotically stand from his chair, which creaked as he moved off of it. he’d been in one position for so long, he’d forgotten how to move everything. it took him a minute to calibrate himself and remember how to move his legs in a walking pattern. his feet ached as they hit the hardwood floor, each step agony as he reached the kitchen. his phone had been left charging on the counter, and it glowed with each incoming message monty had missed. he glanced at it, glaring at the soft light of the screen - the rest of the world could wait, his stomach could not.
he opened the fridge to find barely anything inside; an apple that looked wrinkled and old, two instant noodle packs, and a bottle of ketchup. he selected one of the instant noodle packages, quickly glancing over the instructions on the back before placing it into the microwave. he waited the allotted time for it to finish, moving away from the microwave only once to grab a fork. he popped open the package, the steam barely visible in the darkened room. monty picked through the noodles tentatively, finding the highly artificial smell a bit off putting. even with the curious smell, the first bite was euphoric - just like eating his first bite of food in years. he continued to scarf down the food, not even stopping for a breath. once he was done he tossed the container down on the counter, he’d clean it up later or maybe nikolai would do it for him. nikolai seemed to pick up monty’s room more than he did it himself.
monty moved towards his phone, grabbing it off the counter. ‘107 MISSED MESSAGES’ flashed on the screen, along with a few missed calls, and even more emails. he smirked, realizing that most of them were from nikolai. he didn’t even have to go through three of them before realizing most of them were reminders for him to eat, sleep, drink water, and shower. nikolai could be a real pain in the ass sometimes, but monty liked having someone who cared. he texted back to make sure that niko wouldn’t call the police on him, he couldn’t have that.
i’m o.k. just finished the project. see u tomorrow.
as he finished typing in the message he tossed his phone back on the counter, he returned back to his chair. a yawn passed his lips as he shut down his computer. it was satisfying to hear the whirring of the fans cease. he relaxed back into his chair, closing his eyes. niko would definitely text him a few more times while monty napped, but he didn’t mind it... niko could bother him any time.
M O N T YÂ Â Â Â Â who is he?
why does he keep pushing himself to be the best? will it really matter when he’s buried six feet under? will sitting at the computer for more hours than he conversates really amount to anything? no.
